Rise of the Evangelical Bishops

I generally lik Weigel and I think he’s captured a genuine truth here, but I fear he chose his buzzword poorly. For me and for many Americans, the label “Evangelical” generally connotates a ‘touchy, feely’ religious sentiment that places little value on truth, principle or scholarship. Rather if focuses on the feelings of the participant above all else.

Maybe that’s just my prejudice based on the moderate contact I’ve had with the mainstream protestant evangelical culture, but to me, Chaput and guys like him deserve a better label. How about “apostolic?”
 
Actually as a Methodist coming into the Church through RCIA this year I like the evangelical label- to me it means standing up for the gospel and I guess I am all for revival especially in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia which is my home territory. So many of my Catholic friends have been falling away from the Church or upset enough about it to think about leaving here because of all that has been going on in this archdiocese and here I am with my call from God coming into the Church with no idea really of any of these things but loving the idea that this new guy seems to be standing up for all of the right things. But I have an admittedly Protestant Evangelical mindset:) I would love to see new life here in Philadelphia and my Catholic brothers and sisters on fire for the Faith again! I have a great feeling about this guy but even more what God is doing in The Church with this trend. But apostolic works for me too:) As I said I am really new to all of this- as a Methodist the most we had to deal with was pastors we loved being moved around for political reasons. The whole hierarchy of the Catholic Church is still pretty much a mystery to me and really looking forward to learning more in RCIA!

I think this is much more tied to JP2’s “New Evangelezation” then it is anything else. When we as Catholics hear “evangelical” we think protestant pretty much automatically. I’m guilty of that myself. However, there is a legitimate evangelical tradition in the Church and many of those Bishop we are seeing come into their Diocese or Archdiocese now are ones that came up during the time when JP2 was spreading this idea.

I agree with you in that I like “Apostolic” better myself when it comes to describing the Bishops who espouse this idea from JP2. 🙂
 
A lot of these buzz words belonged to the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic faith to begin with. I for one believe that they have been ripped off by the prots and those words need to be put back into their proper, intended context and held onto with a big gripping bearhug by the faithful from this day forth.
