I myself am in the stage of initiation and i was not sure about my status in the church, i was counting myself as a catechumen, so i sent a mail to my priest and he answered and said no im not a catechumen yet, we will talk about that when we meet at saturday he said.

He said to me before that i have a right to recieve a catholic funeral if something should happen and also the baptism of desire, but now you are saying the opposite so who am i to believe?

If you are right i will not go outside my house and leave the bed to take unnessecary risks until i pass the rite of acceptance then.

But i guess the Lord knows better whats in every mans heart and will not send anyone to hell just because the church didnt give him the possibillity to pass any rite yet. In that case the church must be responsible and not the person who desired it.

No, I didn’t say if you are in the inquiry stage you cannot recieve a catholic funeral or the baptism of desire if you suddenly die. I said that it was not automatic and your pastor could request permission from the Bishop.
 
So what am I right now??? Am I a Cathecumen, or technically since the Rite of Acceptance didn’t take place, am I not a Cathecumen?? Would I be able to receive a Catholic Funeral. If I were to die suddenly would I receive the Baptism of Desire??

Technically you are not a Catechumen.

Would I be able to receive a Catholic Funeral?

That would be up to the Pastor and Bishop to decide.

If I were to die suddenly would I receive the Baptism of Desire??

That would be up to God to determine.

Glad to here your’s went well. Ours was great, wasn’t nerve racking at all! I was ready to answer with “faith” but Father only asked us if we’re ready to accept the faith, or something to that affect, and we just answered in unison “we do.” Then we all wrote our names in the “Book of the Elect”

It was a very quick experience, and yet it was amazing afterward to know that we’re now Cathucmens and have our foot in the door of Mother Church:thumbsup:

Reff
Despite all attempts to reinstate Pharisees, if you were baptized in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit then you’re a Candidate. If you were not baptized that way then you’re a Catechumen. When the Bishop signs your section (page) in the Book of the Elect, you will be part of the Elect. Do not sweat the rest, you’re in good shape.

These are questions to present to your priest. Get an appointment with him and ask him to bring his copy of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and go through it with you to show you where you stand right now.

One becomes a Catechumen by undergoing the Rite of Acceptance. These Rites have meaning.

It is not necessary to be a Catechumen in order to be received into the Church - people did it for centuries - but if someone is saying that they are offering an RCIA program, it’s false advertising if they do not actually provide the specified Rites, or if they do the Rites in the wrong order.

You make the Pharisee’s so proud. In Christ’s day all these “rites” were nonexistent. These manmade rules were usually developed in Rome to hide a loyalty to another (god not Caesar). I am so glad the days of guilt and rules are fading away. There was never a religious base for these rites, and that is far better catechesis than whether pg 21 was used or page p xx was substituted.

I don’t know if this will help or make you even more nervous.

Every time I see someone go through one of the rites, I get weepy. It’s such a gift to me to see someone publicly say that they want to come into the Church because it’s proof of how the Holy Spirit is working in their lives. The Spirit has led you to this point and will continue to lead you. Going through the rite is your response, and seeing you go through the rite is a gift to everyone else.

It went well, but I am glad that it’s over. My sponsor, Randy, just introduced me and I said “hello, glad to be here” and got away from the microphone.

I focused on either him or Fr. Terry instead of the people.

Fr. Terry almost forgot me and the last RCIA student.:rotfl:
 
Glad it went well! I guess it was a bit scary for you, my church has a capacity of about 200 so not too bad for me!

Heres to the next step…I don’t know what you do but I imagine its similar. We go to the diocesan Cathedral on the first sunday of lent to meet the bishop.

I’m really looking forward to that one though, we go along with all the other candidates/catechumenates in our diocese, so we’re all in the same boat, so to speak.

I’m sure somebody will correct me if I’m wrong but the alternative is that the bishop visits your parish church. But I think they prefer it the other way round!

In this diocese the Bishop holds three or four Rites of Election around different parts of the diocese. Every Catechumen and Sponsor (or Sponsor proxy) who will be Baptized at the Easter Vigil MUST be present at one of them, Every name of every person is entered in the parish Book of the Elect and the Bishop signs the page under the last name at the Rite so you can’t add another name after he signs it. If you do then the Book of the Elect must go with the additional Catechumen to another Rite of Election for the Bishop to sign again after the added name.

Already Baptized Candidates DO NOT enter their names in the Book of the Elect.
 
If someone just went through the rite of Acceptance this week they really should not be going to the Rite of Election this Lent but the following Lent. The catechumenate is not meant to be a three month process. Our cats went though the Rite of Acceptance last year.
