(CNN)Robert Trump, 71, the younger brother of President Donald Trump, died Saturday at a New York hospital, Donald Trump announced in a statement.

“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace,” the President said.

Donald Trump made a last minute decision to go to New York Friday to visit his brother as he headed to New Jersey for the weekend.

Robert Trump had been admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

Details of Robert Trump’s illness have not been released. He had been sick for several months, a person familiar with knowledge of the matter told CNN.

During a White House briefing on Friday, Trump declined to provide reporters with details on his brother’s illness.

Robert is the second brother Mr. Trump has lost. If I recall correctly, he had another brother, Fred, who was an alcoholic and died from that. The president has said that’s why he doesn’t drink – he’s seen what excessive drinking did to his family.

I’ll bet he’s glad he stopped off to see his brother. That should provide some comfort in the weeks to come. And, I’m wondering if his constant attackers will back off a little and let him have some peace during this sorrowful time?

Please don’t expect this. People can be very cruel. Prayers are in order as he has a very busy week ahead.

Lord,. Robert is gone now from this earthly dwelling,
and has left behind those who mourn his absence.
Grant that they may hold his memory dear,
never bitter for what they have lost
nor in regret for the past,
but always in hope of the eternal Kingdom
where you will bring them together again.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This reminds me of a line from someone’s rendition of the story of Cinderella (I think that was the story). At the end of the movie the evil step sisters find themselves in a position of needing help and go to the now married Cinderella. When they ask for help, Cinderella tells them that she will ensure that they receive every courtesy that they had extended to her.
 
The new version of Cinderella is that the step sisters were misunderstood and it was really the mean step mother.

All people need prayers.

Very sad to hear. May Robert RIP. I can recall a grandfather’s brother passed away in a similar way. He fell, hit his head and passed away a few days later. It was a great shock to the family for a brother that was much cherished by his brothers and sisters.
 
There hasn’t been any official statement on the cause of his death has there?

No but reports are saying it was an ongoing illness, that he has been in and out of the hospital for months.

I saw a few articles mentioning that President Trump has mentioned his brother suffered a fall which resulted in brain bleeds, resulting in his much loved brothers passing.
 
I didn’t see that.

I hope his passing was peaceful and he didn’t suffer much.
 
What does one expect from the Washington Post? Good taste is not their forte.
