Israel reconsiders decision to cut ties with Robertson after apology

By The Associated Press

Israel is reconsidering its decision to break off contacts with Pat Robertson over the construction of a Christian heritage park after the U.S. evangelist apologized for saying Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s massive stroke was divine retribution, a spokesman said Saturday.

Israel and Robertson had been close to finalizing a deal to build the multimillion dollar tourist attraction when the broadcaster said last week that Sharon had been punished by God for pulling Israel out of the Gaza Strip in September. The comments prompted Israel to call off talks with Robertson over the deal.

Robertson issued an apology, which Israel accepted on Friday.

“In light of the apology and his expression of sorrow over Sharon’s health, we will reconsider our decision,” said Ido Hartuv, a spokesman for Tourism Minister Abraham Hirchson.

Israel’s relations with the evangelical Christian community remain strong, Hartuv said. “We really love them,” he said.

Sharon suffered the stroke on Jan. 4, and he remained comatose in “critical but stable” condition Saturday.

The day after the stroke, Robertson suggested he was being punished for pulling Israel out of the Gaza Strip last summer. The pullout was seen by many evangelical groups as a retreat from biblical prophecy of Jewish sovereignty over the Holy Land.

“God considers this land to be his,” Robertson said on his TV program “The 700 Club.” “You read the Bible and he says ‘This is my land,’ and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine.”’

In a letter of apology sent to Sharon’s family, Robertson said his remarks had been “inappropriate and insensitive” and asked for forgiveness.

Israel hopes to attract 1 million pilgrims every year to the park, which will be built near the Sea of Galilee close to sites where Christians believe Jesus preached and performed miracles.

Under the emerging agreement, Robertson would lead a group of Christians from around the world to build a broadcast center, an open-air chapel and an auditorium for re-enacting Jesus’ journeys in the area. The groundbreaking project is slated to begin early this year.

On the other hand, why should the many Israelis (including the many Arab Christians who live in the Galilee) who would benefit from the boon of having another 1 million $-spending tourists in the country lose out because ol’ Pat has foot-in-mouth disease?

Be well!

Money talks!
I would suggest money thinks before it talks, unlike Robertson who seems to talk before he thinks.

I don’t feel that Robertson should have apologized for his statement. Israel has now given back 95% of the land that they justifiably took away from the Arabs when they were attacked by them. I do belief that God could have caused the stroke that Sharon had as a punishment. After-all the land given back to the Arabs does belong to God. However, I would have to wonder why God didn’t cause Condoleeza Rice to have a stroke because she is the one that pressured Sharon to cede the land to the Palastinians.

i agree. he first says what he wants to say, and then he recants and takes it back and says he’s sorry. what’s the difference in me wanting to punch someone, knowing i shouldn’t, do it anyways, and then saying oh i’m sorry…the damage has been done…you must think before you speak and act.

I don’t think he took anything back. He just said it was an inappropriate time to say it.

Pat Robertson is the graduate of an ivy league university. He served as a Marine Corps officer in Korea but because of political connections through his father he got assigned to be the “liquor officer” in a headquarters command. When he tried his run for president the facts came out. He tried to sue for libel but couldn’t get around the truth and his lawsuit and the campaign just faded away.

He is a religious manipulator and he is smart. He raises large sums of money. He also thinks he has a direct line to God and makes outrageous theological observations such as suggesting that God might punish the Dover, PA school board for the position taken on teaching evolution, and, most recently, suggesting that Ariel Sharon’s stroke might have been divine retribution for ceding some territory.

When someone is gravely ill, it is ill-mannered to suggest that they got what was coming to them. It just isn’t done. Even when Joe Stalin died in 1953, leaders around the world expressed sympathy even though Stalin was widely hated and even many Russians were relieved.

For anyone to suggest that he (or she) knows the mind of God - as I think Robertson has done on more than one occasion - is to my mind unexcelled hubris.

I am just sorry he gets so much press.

I agree, I am not going to judge Pat Robertson, but he really does make all Christians look like a joke, just because he gets so much press. Just remember what Jesus said about the rich man.

When will someone put a muzzle on Pat Robertson? This is a repeated pattern. What will he say next?

Robertson wasn’t a Christian when he was in the service. I don’t think he denied all of the accusations plus the press does often times blow things out of proportion to what the truth really is.

Robertson has had Mother Angelica on his 700 Club show a number of times before she was involved with ETWN.

Over the years I have donated money to Robertson and will continue to do so in the future.
