Robin Cook restored my faith in politicians single handedly. His resignation from the cabinet over Iraq was fantastic and made more so because of his incisive action in Kosovo and the fact that he seemed to have a proud idea of Britain as a force for good in the world at the heart of his four years as foriegn secretary. He was renowned as a formidable debator in the house and I also liked the fact that he was prickly and acerbic to journalists- if he didn’t want to talk, he wouldn’t talk.

I really feel like one of the few good guys has been lost to us.

My favourite quote would probably the one mentioned on the front page of the Independent newspaper this morning: -

“We would have made more progress against terrorism if we had brought peace to Palestine rather than war to Iraq”

It vocalised my own sentiments on the subject perfectly.

His obituary on the BBC site.

I think that I owe her a lot in that she has an emotional intelligence to her. I have always prided myself on doing the hard work and the background and the briefs, but I think she has also taught me that one needs to understand and respond to other people’s feelings, which possibly I was not as good at before.

Yes… a great and brave man for standing up for his beliefs…

Too bad not one of our American politicos close to Bush didnt have the courage to do the same. 😦

Exactly what was his proposal to bring peace to Palestine? I am not that familiar with him but he sounds like someone more from the mold of Chamberlain than Chruchill.

Why do you say that? What statement of his led you to believe that?

Fighting Fat, the Pope was against Kosovo War too, why are you agree with that war?

I don’t Franze, I’m with the Holy Father. I just mentioned it because I felt it demonstrated how Robin Cook was not against sticking up for people or anything like that (ie he wasn’t more of a Chamberlain than a Churchill, as one of my colonial bretheren so incitefully pointed out) but he was a man of principle who stood for war in Kosovo without UN backing, but against the unjust nightmare that is the Iraq debacle.

How is Iraq a debacle?
Saddam is out of power; the kurds have some assurance they wouldn’t be gassed; the Iraqis are working on a constitution.

Under what possible scenario is this a debacle? What it is is a victory for those who believe in freedom. One that is being upheld with the blood of brave Iraqi police and allied personnel. To “Tokyo Rose” the situation there is a great disservice to all the brave Iraqis who voted and who continue to prove you wrong by their marching forward to a peaceful constitution.

If the west cannot believe in its own convictions on Justice and freedom we cannot bring that freedom to the suffering peoples of the world under fascist or religous tyranny. If only the Sudan had such intervention.

Ok, Fighting Fat, the Kosovo war is one of the most stranges conflicts that I have heard. The serbs now, are removed from Kosovo, and monasteries are burned. Extremism islamism is spreading there.

It would appear Michael, we gather news from very different sources!

The West doesn’t understand it’s own convictions let alone believe them. There are some who like you, believe that what is going on services what is good and right. Fair enough. There are others, like Robin Cook, and me, and a good many others, who disagree. As a Catholic, I believe that we cannot attain any sort of victory in Iraq through the use of violence.
If we are achieving anything, it is a million more converts to the extremist cause. It knocked on my door in July.

The allies are not using violence. Currently we are trying to rebuild their infrastructure while fanatics suicide bomb the Iraqi’s and the allies when they get the chance.

The violence was initiated by Saddam against Kuwait and his own people. They deserve better than a cut and run and to be left to fanatics after they displayed bravery in voting and struggling to get together a new government.

If this is true, why did GB senior stop in 91? Somebody “cut and run” and left them to Saddam! How many died throught that I wonder?

Then, what comes out of the barrels of the guns of American soldiers? A flag that reads, “Bang!”? Sorry, we shoot people, too.

Ummm that would have been the United Nations, you know, that (dysfunctional, ineffective, corrupt) organization that is hailed by progressives as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Bush 41 did not exceed the UN mandate because the coalition that had been put together was based around it.

So what you are saying is that GB senior followed the ruling of the UN and had a limit on the legal mandate he had, i.e. he followed the rule of law.

Now to my knowledge GB Junior IGNORED the ruling of the UN, does this mean that he didn’t follow the rule of law, i.e. the war was illegal?

So which is it?
GW Senior is weak for not toppling Saddam
GW Junior is reckless for Toplling Saddam?

Rule of Law depends on whose law we’re talking about. The UN did not even follow up on their own laws. No no, that’s not genocide in Sudan /irate sarcasm

Only while attempting to rebuild the country.

It is just to assist these people who are beseiged by evil on all sides. They are not babes. They came to vote. Their Police are dying. They are a far car from needing wetnurses. They need a helping hand for now.

There were seventeen UN mandates concerning Iraq. All Bush 43 did was enforce them. The UN itself at this point was hamstrung due to its own bureaucracy and the fact that Iraq had co-opted through bribery and blackmail France and Russia among others in order to halt the process. That being said, where is it written that we need the UN’s permission anyway?

Where is it written anywhere that a decision to go to war requires UN approval? UN decisions are not the rule of law! Where is it in our Constitution that we need the permission of the UN to take any action? If you’ll recall, Clinton circumvented the UN to take action in Bosnia in the nineties due to a similar situation and conflict of interest, (at that time between Russia and Serbia.) The President acted with the permission of Congress which is all that is required under our laws. The war was not illegal.

We are only defending ourselves and the rest of the Iraqis who don’t want a radical Islamic government.

Your ‘let them take care of their own problems’ answer is very unlike you Rich. Do you believe that the poor in this country or anywhere for that matter should have to take care of their own problems? Should we have stayed out of Bosnia and Kosivo and let them take care of their own problems? Should we turn our backs on the world because it is not our problem? Come on Rich you can give much beter answers than that.
