Robin Williams Attacks Catholic Priests and Points Out Lack of Consequences

On June 21st, Leno made the following tasteless “joke.”

“In Austin, Texas, a 61-year-old priest has been arrested after he left rehab. This priest leaves rehab, gets drunk and drives his car into a restaurant. So much for the Vatican’s Ten Commandments of safe driving. Imagine that, a priest driving drunk into a restaurant. Thank God it was not a Chuck E. Cheese. Oh my God.”
Oh yes I remember hearing about that now. 😦 I’ll bet the audience just roared with laughter too.

Would have been nice if half the audience walked out in protest.😦

It’s mostly hatred and bigotry on Williams’ and Leno’s part. But as we all know, anti-Catholicism is the final frontier – the last acceptable form of bigotry. Hollywood, in all of its political correctness, has excluded the Catholic church from their protective political correctness.

This thread is horribly off course and I don’t think the point was to attack/defend the priesthood (I could be wrong).

But in my opinion, a devout Catholic should be made aware of such anti-Catholic remarks by celebrities and should make his entertainment choices accordingly. Does this mean we should only see movies that star Catholics and are made by Catholics? No, of course not. But Robin Williams and Jay Leno (don’t forget his little Chucky Cheese joke a few weeks ago) are both horribly anti-Catholic. I therefore will not watch the Tonight Show nor will I see ANY movies with Robin Williams.

You simply cannot call yourself a devout Catholic and sit by while someone blatantly attacks ALL priests. A joke about a priest who has been proven guilty of something is one thing, a joke (read as “attack”) about ALL priests is disgusting and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Totally agree! no one is defending any Priests who hurt children, your not wrong. This thread went way of course, as a Catholic I am offended by Robin Williams and his attack on Catholicism and The Priesthood , and rightfully so. Jay Leno’s Anti Catholicism is something that turned me of from him years ago and rightfully so.

Robin Williams should think twice before he gets on live TV and makes these digusting jokes about other peoples beliefs. Maybe just maybe he should take a look at just exactly what he is saying. Perhaps the joke is on him!

A British comedian,Freddie Starr, who was not anti-catholic,did a sketch some years ago which poked fun at Gays and provoked a very outraged Claire Rayner(Agony Aunt)and her husband to walk out of the theatre.
It was suggested afterwards that the walkout was staged because everybody knew about Freddie’s madcap humour. We knew to avoid him.
It’s time we started copying these people like Claire Rayner.A
large number should book tickets and,at the appropriate moment,
walk out,En Masse.I can remember a certain Irish singer tore up a picture of Pope John Paul 2 on stage.Shortly afterwards,a couple of lorries turned up at her door to deliver a pile of her records in pieces.
While i won’t try to defend priests who have been guilty of abuse,i
will continue to attack those who are only too eager to talk about abusive priests, but seem to take a vow of silence regarding abuse
by Protestant clergy and non-clerics.

With all due respect; I have been trying to teach my children the basics about accountability. When they have to get heck for something; they sometimes will just say; “well look at so and so! They do it too.”

I am teaching them that this is not being accountable, to point the finger at someone else; when it is their own behavior that is being addressed; otherwise, they are shirking some accountability.

People should start a separate thread about “Protestant Clergy who abuse kids;” if that’s such a big concern. To see the avoidance of accountability here being directed against Robin Williams, is a big disappointment. Many would rather attack him than be properly accountable. In such cases, that is called enabling the perpetrators of abuse.

I really do not believe Chimaugua meant “respect” to be that inclusive.

He is sound in his assessments of the degree of offense pedophiles commit. If a priest commits that kind of assault he is not a priest he becomes an anti-priest. This is so egregious that there can be no tolerance whatsoever.

I think Chimaugua is being misunderstood out of context.
No! He is not “anti-priest!” The word “priest” does not apply in any way shape or form to pedophiles! “Criminal” is a better word. More people here should use it.

I have seen not one post here which even hints at avoidance of accountability being proper. We’re as outraged at what has happened as anyone, probably moreso since some of our donations are going to pay the settlements. The topic of the thread and the complaints of the posters here is that Williams lumped all priests together, that is, priest = pedophile, which is simply not the case.

To say that anyone here condones the actions of these criminal priests or their superiors who refused to take the proper action is an insult. For shame.

I am truly not understanding what it is you want here! you continually want to derail this thread and point it in another direction.

Why does a thread addressing Robin Williams attack on Catholicism and the Priestshood, and Catholics taking offense to that upset you? And what does that have to do with anyone here taking accountablity? Accountability for what? What is it that you want?

No one is singling out Protestant Abuse so there is no need for a sperate thread for that purpose. Burnside was quite simply trying to make a point about how Catholics seem to be the brunt of jokes.

What avoidance of accountability has been shifted to Robin Williams. He is responsible for what he said no one else!

Robin Williams, Attacked, Bashed, said disgusting things about MY Faith. About Catholicism, about The Priesthood about what I Love and believe in. On national TV, for that I was highly offended, there was NO avoiding of anything accountability or otherwise. I am offended at Robin Williams. I have no clue what you are talking about!

“…it would be better for him had he a millstone tied around his neck as cast into the sea…”

Nobody is exempt.

No way did my post play down priest abuse. The point of this thread is that our society is terribly politically correct about not offending people, except when it comes to catholics. It is noticeable that Robin Williams and his ilk tend to have little or nothing to say against Islam.Could it possibly be because they are scared of suicide bombers? In any case there is no need to do a separate thread about clergy abuse. There already is one:-

There’s lots of “bashing” going on with all kinds of things and people. You should try to ignore it, and get on with business. Going after Robin Williams aint worth half of what anyone here has given it. Spend the same or better effort nailing the abusers to the wall and we will all be better off.

Do I smell a persecution complex?

Just because the guy slams Catholics in his jokes; you want him to practice “inclusive slamming” now and make sure he slams Islam equally? I am trying to figure out the logic of that but it’s hard.

People slam Adventists all the time. I am glad the Bible does not say we need to act like the “anti-Robin Williams” crowd is doing here.

I was going to answer your answer to my post first but this one made me start laughing.

Your hatred for Catholicism is so transparent and all consuming that you make absolutely no sense.

How pray tell does being offended by Robin Williams bashing Catholics and pointing out that he and his ilk do not do so with Islam? Translate into meaning you want them to practice “inclusive slamming”… Ofcourse figuring out the logic in that would be hard there is none!.. Your the one who came up with it!!!.. No one here wants Robin Williams to be slamming anyones Religion.

Why are you on this thread has been my question all along. Do you have to translate any and all objections and disagreement as “hatred for Catholics?” That is the worst kind of persecution complex there is. I am trying to point out the ludicrous nature of going after Williams when it would be way better to spend the energy on the abusers that were/are the apparent concerns of his jokes. Such jokes are crass; but totally underserving of the vengeance you and others are wanting to impose on the man. If you want to call my objections here “hatred for catholics;” then I have to let you; maybe if one of the abused kids were your’s, you would see this thing differently. Williams is quite simply NOT the problem.

Ok! Again why are you on this thread?

What all disagreements and objections am I translating as Hatred for Catholics?

How is saying honestly that I am most definately offended by Robin Williams bashing my Religion on National TV, means having a persecution complex?

How am I “Going after Robin Williams”? I did NOT go on TV and attack his beliefs.

Spend the energy on what abusers? Just what is it you are talking about? I asked you this before. No one on here is condoning the sexual abuse of children,

This is not about the abused children! This about Robin Williams and his attack on Catholicism…You have highjacked this thread enough about the sex scandal. Do not dare to presume to tell me how I would feel if one of those children were mine!

How am I “Going after Robin Williams”? I did NOT go on TV and attack his beliefs.
You are on the INTERNATIONAL internet attacking him; attacking his character, his motives, likely “reaching” many more than he did on TV. Think about it. Many here on this form are simply trying to paste him back. If you are offended about his joke fine. Why parade it in public when his jokes about Catholics are NOT the real problem that initiated his comments? You are only digging the hole deeper. I don’t think his intentions or motives are half of what you say they are/were. How you can translate that opinion as “hatred for Catholics” is really amazing; and how you can attach all the baggage to William’s comments that you have is far more raving than the likely reality of the situation, which you don’t know anyways.

Warning: If the uncharitable bickering doesn’t stop, this thread will be closed. Thanks for your cooperation.

I think the thread should be closed,as Protestant 101 has a tendency to say things and then twists or ignores much of what you say in reply. He is the one who seems to think it is ok for him to hijack a thread which was bashing Robin Williams into one attacking priest scandals. When i suggested our problem was that he attacked the catholic church and avoided doing it to anyone else Protestant 101 suggested i start a separate thread.I told him there was no need, there already was one.He totally ignored that
and came back with this nonsense about us condoning this behaviour.Perhaps he didn’t bother to look at the link i gave because he is the one in denial mode, rather than us.
In case he cannot tell the difference,i can tell a funny story about
a boyhood friend of mine who later became a priest. That is not quite the same as smearing all priests with the actions of a few.I repeat,"Robbie Williams avoids treating Islam the same way because he is afraid of the suicide battalions."As for having a persecution complex,i think Protestant 101 is having a laugh.I’ve heard of too many occasions where Protestants bring something like the Spanish Inquisition into their discussion with Catholics. It was never intended to be the topic in hand.It was a dodge to take the wind out of the catholic sails and demonstrate how badly catholics treated them.
