Yes we are, we just see it differently. I think he tries hard, yet he rarely ever speaks to “why” Catholics believe as they do. He does not give reasons for the faith he has, he only uses a blunt speech style to attack people for attacking the Church, but he never delves into the why of the questions.
Have you ever heard him on Catholic Answers, The World Over or Sunday Night Live with Fr. Groeschel. He talks plenty about why Catholics believe the way they do. Maybe he gets less detailed when he’s speaking with the secular press…just a thought.

Yes, frankly I feel he has a great faith, yet he rarely gets to the meat of Catholic issues. He is harsh and very much an attack personality, yet I think we need someone to put the actual truths out there.

I find it very telling that ABC and NBC have declined to air interview with Parish Hilton, yet it was perfectly acceptable to air the vile skit RW performed on the Tonight Show…very telling indeed.

One problem is he is “on the attack” he hardly has that type of time on tv. One problem is the squeaky wheel gets the attention, he has to be outspoken about contradictions if it is going to be pointed out and have something done about it. All you have to think about is Sharpton. Although he’ll try his best to point out he isn’t looking for some one’s head on a platter, but an acknowledgment of an offense.

Was Robin Williams attacking ALL priests, or ones who just committed the crimes? From what I read it could be either.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven. Matt 5:11,12

All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life. Luke 21:17-19

Jesus said there would be days like this.

Was that an answer to my question?

 I guess Catholics have to start suing or chopping off heads before people think twice about saying things like this? (Not serious). But it’s so frustrating.

But as much as I wanted throw my tv set out the window and burn tapes of Mork and Mindy, I don’t get for the life of me how anyone could try to turn it into a Jewish thing. 😦

I don’t know why the particular person (Sungenis?) said what ever regarding Jews. But, there still exists folks who mange to fold almost any bit of news into a Jewish conspiracy thing. Its sad to find this kind of bias surviving.

The multiple errors in the report (via the weblink) has actually given a bit of credit to Robin Williams instead of effectivly countering RW’s statements.

I think he comes across as an attack dog, and not as a reasoned person. We need to speak out against things like this, but in a reasoned way so people can have some hope of hearing the truth.

Tom317, I to would like to hear the truth, From what i have read, The US bishops were talking about the abuse scandal long before 2002 Boston, So they had every chance to sort it out, And all of you are paying a very high price now

So the Bishops in 2002 had the ability to prevent things that happened from 1950 to 1995?
You like a typical historical revisionst love to judge events that happended 20 or 50 years ago to by the accumulated knowleged we have currently. Its a phony approch to history.
The Bishops by in large handled these things the way the culture of the time handled them. By being pretty much in denial.
How brilliant it is to be crictical of something that as happened That we all know is wrong years after the fact. I sure many of these critics today faced with similar situations 30- 50 years ago acted in the same manner a the Bishops.
This is the same approch families and all public institutions took.

The Bishops to there credit instituted reforms in the 1990’s
as more was learned about this addicition. Were they suffiecient? Probably not. but the reforms were starting long before the magical 2002. Only the future can determine the success of what was done in the 1990’s.
But given the epidemic proportions of Sexual Offenses in this
country today maybe we should call all institutions to task.
As large segments of our society are still in denial. They much rather focus attention on what happened in the Church 30 years ago than what’s happening in there communities today.
We all should be asking yourself what can I do to prevent this evil from ever occuring again anywhere.

Sounded like a mockery of all priests to me. Listen for yourself. See post #108 in this thread.

gus, I have been working for years for governments to tackle abuse, What is phoney about knowing things, You should read some thing writen in the Catholic World called before Dallas, I was doing seminars on the efects of abuse well before 2002

You want to hear the truth from a faith-bashing comedian? You think he holds the truth?

I think that many in the media are anti-catholic. Even for the coverage of John Paul II’s funeral, I tried to stay with EWTN. Often when they want an opinion on something Catholic, they bring out the most irreverant priests to interview or the nuns that are rebellious. They rarely will interview the most of faithful priests, like Fr. Pavone for instance. Yet how ofter have we seen Fr. McBrien (recently passed away Jesuit that was very progressive) or Fr. Greeley? Also they choose to listen to Catholics that are not faithful Catholics on how we can bend the rules to believe what we wish or what is comfortable. Think politicians that shall remain nameless that say they are Catholic and pro-choice.

Robin Williams thinks he can insult Catholics because of how the media handles all things Catholic. He would never have said similar things about another religion that shall also remain nameless that gets violent when confronted with any slight criticism.

You may not see the attacks and I am not sure why, but they are there every day.
Fitz, I agree with your post. Not to hijack this thread, but I was not aware that Father McBrien passed away. What happened? This is the Priest from Notre Dame, right?

His lack of concern for insulting a huge # of people who have been hurt enough by the scandal is bad enough. But, imagine how this must make the victims of priestly abuse feel? IMO, his remarks add insult to injury. Some topics are just NOT funny. The sexual abuse of young people would be tops on that list.

I wonder if he realizes how incredibly ignorant he sounds.

I said judging actions of historical events using standards of today is phoney history
Are you saying its a proper approch?
Were you around in the Fifities?
There were teachers who taught for years in the Public School
System who by today’s standards would be a sex offender. But in those days retired with honors.
I know from personal experience
The word Sexual abuse wasn’t even in the Vocabulary

Let’s all take a deep breath here and stop these knee jerk reactions. All of you know that in the United States it is perfectly acceptable to attack, satirize, and insult the rich and the powerful. However, it is taboo to attack, satirize or insult the poor and the weak.

Don Imus was fired from his job for calling some girls basketball players “nappy headed hos.” However, every day I read vicious attacks on politicians in government offices in all branches, executive, legislative and judicial, that make the designation “nappy headed hos” sound mild, indeed.

In a famous case, in the 1960’s the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Bull Connors and in favor of the New York Times that Connors, and other public figures, could not sue the Times for libel unless he could prove actual malice. Since then, persons in power have been fair game for anybody.

The church is rich and powerful and is an inviting target for many. It is constantly involved in political action - as evidenced by Catholic periodicals that routinely discuss legislative efforts -and has made itself a public figure, if there was ever any doubt.

Now, Williams would never have levelled his ridicule at a person perceived to be poor, such as Mother Theresa. That would have violated the taboo and he would have been punished accordingly.

Who really cares what Robin Williams thinks anyway?

I have not listened to the faith bashing comedian, I as writing about what the bishops comfference knew ten years re 2002
