My goodness…I never thought this story would still have legs over a week later.

I said judging actions of historical events using standards of today is phoney history
Are you saying its a proper approch?
Were you around in the Fifities?
There were teachers who taught for years in the Public School
System who by today’s standards would be a sex offender. But in those days retired with honors.
I know from personal experience
The word Sexual abuse wasn’t even in the Vocabulary
One of my friends worked in probation from the early Fifities UK, And from what i have been told and some of the records i have seen, We knew a lot more about the sexual abuse of children than was in the public domain, This is one of the exccuses used by a Catholic nuns orders Ireland for the ill treatment of children, We were not trained in child care, People make exccuses for the past, But even today people run away from whats happening now

gus, Not long ago I was reading an article about a priest from the USA, Not one who abused children, One who tried to stop the Christian Brothers and other orders in Ireland from abusing children 1940s ,

I used to think that Robin Williams was an incredibly talented actor. But after watching him on the Today show this morning, I was filled with pity for him. Him making fun of the Catholic church and discussing the ‘status’ of his life. Multiple marriages, premarital sex, and just getting out of rehab. What a sad, sad life, he makes his living making fun of peoples suffering (imagine how the victims of the abuse feel). He is trying to fill the empty void that St. Augustine spoke of, the void inside us that only God can fill. Let us be true Christians and pray for this poor lost soul.

I guess if Robin Williams wants to be fair and objective, he should look at the Protestant communities as well:

foxnews.com/story/0,2933,286153,00.html

The mainstream media has all but ignored the recent Associated Press report that the three major insurance companies for Protestant Churches in America say they typically receive 260 reports each year of minors being sexually abused by Protestant clergy, staff, or other church-related relationships.

In light of the sex abuse scandal that rocked the Catholic Church beginning five years ago, religious and victims’ rights organizations have been seeking this type of data for years. It has been hard to come by since Protestant Churches are more de-centralized than the Catholic Church.

Responding to heavy media scrutiny, the Catholic Church has reported that since 1950, 13,000 “credible accusations” have been brought against Catholic clerics (about 228 per year.) The fact that this number includes all credible accusations, not just those that have involved insurance companies, and still is less than the number of cases in Protestant churches reported by just three insurance companies, should be making front page of The New York Times and the network evening news. It’s not.

[snip]

Interesting. I guess it is more fun to ridicule Catholics than Protestants.

RomanRevert Have you read my posts on this subject, The reason i ask Some of us know there is a bigger problem that just the Catholic church,

Fitz, I agree with your post. Not to hijack this thread, but I was not aware that Father McBrien passed away. What happened? This is the Priest from Notre Dame, right?
You know I heard it on the news one day and I assumed it was him. I am not sure what happened. He was a Jesuit I think. I will google to see if I can find out more. I hope I did not post something untrue. Be right back!

I am back and I can’t find any evidence. I am so sorry. I stand corrected. He is alive and still rebelling against the Catholic church, and yes he is the Catholic priest at Notre Dame. So sorry!

There is a good point in separating the condition of another era from today’s knowledge as we judge. At the same time, many who have committed wrong will over use that excuse. Adults who prey on children know it is wrong - thay is why they are no sneaky about it. Authority figures are obligated to first protect the weak and vulnerable, particulary children – not think first of protecting a very secure and anchored instituion, such as school systems, the military or Churches.

There are speeches written out in the early 1990’s by Bishops that spoke of how they will no longer cover up and that they will first protect the childre, and that they will expell the guilty clergy or Religious - not reassign them. This was also promised in the 1980s.

Many Bishops did the correct thing. However, there are those Bishops or Religious superiors who gave a correct speech, but continued another 10 to 20 (or more) years of covering up and protecting or chielding the predator priest.

I have a difficult time exussing an Authority figure who in the early 1980’s said he would bring about justice, protect the innocent and punish the guilty — and yet spend another 10 years covering up scandal and not executing the proper proceedures he promised.

Robin Williams went off the deep end, and I find not justification for his actions. He is irresponcible. However, his subject matter would not have been tolerated if things had been hadnled differently for the past 20 - almost 40 years when a few of our leaders knew better, said they knew betterer and deliberatly chose not to do better.

That said, let it be known, I feel the majority of our Bishops have taken a proper stand and have done right by the victims.

I agree with much of what you wrote. There is one thing I want to add to it. Priests that abused children are criminal and Bishops that covered it up even worse. The one point that people like Robin Williams overlooks is that Catholic priests are in the minority when it comes to this abuse. Teachers have a higher percentage of sex offenders, and many other people that work with children also do. I am not excusing anyone. It is just that the MSM has forever linked Catholic priests with pedophilia. What about the fairness of that, and the ignoring of all the others that were also hurting children? That is where I think they are wrong to keep it up. I feel like it is old news and now they are just maligning all the good priests that try to do their job. It must be very hard to be a priest in this day and age.

But it’s the minority that did not take a proper stand that the media and its minions are going to harp on.

Which makes me wonder…what was the last time the media reported something positive about the Catholic church…? just a thought.

11 pages is a lot of discussion so I apologize if someone already mentioned this from catholicleague.com

Asked yesterday by “Today” show host Meredith Vieira about his recent bigoted jokes concerning Catholic priests, Robin Williams expressed no remorse for labeling all Catholic priests as pedophiles. (He has acknowledged that he wouldn’t treat other religions the same way for fear of being blown up.) Williams defended his unfair stereotyping of priests saying, “It’s my job as a comic sometimes to keep going…it’s not like it [the sex abuse scandal] didn’t exist.” He added, “They [the Catholic League] should have been up in arms basically after the Children’s Crusade.”

Here is the thing and I am ready to write letters to editors of major newspapers to sort this out. Isiah Washington attacks a person’s sexual orientation and was fired. Imus makes a comment about gender and race and was fired. Mel Gibson makes comments against Jews and apologized. The guy that played Kramer makes racial comments and apologized. Now lets recap recent events. Rosie ODonnell along with other girls from the show “The View” attacks Catholics 15 different times. Nothing happens. Bill Mayer attacks Mother Theresa, Pope John Paul II, and priests in general (comments horrifying, I can’t repeat) on his show on HBO. Nothing happens. Robin Williams and Jay Leno attack the priesthood. Nothing happens. Why is it considered “freedom of speech” when attacks deal with Catholics but hateful and punishable if attacks are on gender, race, or sexual orientation? So yes I do care what Robin Williams says because it has gone on too long that it is okay to say. We need to fight back and let the mainstream media know it is NOT okay.

I agree with you Molly, there really has been so much Catholic bashing by these Hollywood Bimbos, because nothing happens when they do! Yes, Christ said that we would be persecuted, but did He say that all this filth that is being spewed out should be ignored by us? Turn the other cheek sort of attitude? I really think Christ wants us to defend the faith. Our job is not to get all hateful about these attacks, like bombing NBC, or R.W. or Rosie, in the name of Catholicism,😃 but we DO need to speak up! God gave us all mouths to speak with. And brains to think with! We need a strong voice in defense of the GOOD priests, GOOD Bishops that far outnumber the abusers and the Bishops that covered them. A few of us complaining to the network I don’t think is really going to cut the mustard. We need a unifying voice in all this.

Don’t think that’ll happen. Good things about the Church just ain’t juicy enough to report. Main stream media is all about the dirt.

What have you done about it?
  • Have you written a short letter to your local newspaper yet?
  • If you have more than one, did you send it to all the local papers?
  • Have you written a note to the Jay Leno/Tonight Show producer yet?
  • Have you written to any of the ADVERTISERS who spend big money to have their products featured on the Tonight Show?
  • Have you called into the local radio talk show in your area to complain?
I’m not trying to pick on you specifically but these are the things we need to do to be heard. And we need to do it in large numbers! And we need to do it EVERY TIME we see this type of attack on our faith.
bravo. we need to do something like this. whether or not the material is “practical” comedy material, we need to let people know that people are getting offended and it would hurt their career if they were to go through with it.

so who’s going to do it? who’s going to start a website for doing such things? are there any catholic groups who actually protest in public? i bet we could get some strong catholic youth and young adults who would be willing to go out somewhere. melensdad? you did have the best ideas so far. c’mon, the one who smelt it, dealt it. 😉

There have even been books written on the subject. Well, one that I know of :o …hold on a minute while I look up the title/author. I want to get it right.
