Star Wars is gone and done for me after the unholy disappointment that was Force Awakens.

To these new films I say: “Discedite a me, maledicti, in ignem æternum!”

I’m not sure how I feel about the new Star Wars canon. I grew up reading the old books, and then Disney came along and said my childhood stories don’t count anymore. I know its just a make believe land, but I learned a lot about courage and goodness in it.

From a film perspective, I thought Episode 7 was awful. It stole plot elements from the other movies, didn’t have enough colour (why are Disney action movies all in grey scale?!), and the character’s feats seemed to contradict what we’ve seen in other movies.

wow, this is just the teaser and it looks like it will be interesting.

The death star plans being stolen story was told in The star wars radio drama, but I think this fleshes it out even better. Plus, I think that was thrown out with all the old expanded universe. 😦 (an insult to the late Brian Daley, I think)

I may actually see this. I’ll ask my nephew if he’s interested…he liked TFA. He may only want to see the other movies that are part of the new trilogy, though.

Unholy disappointment? TFA had 100% less Jar-Jar than the genuinely crummy prequels, which by itself alone disqualifies it from being a disappointment 😛

After seeing that trailer, I was squeeing at seeing the old uniforms, the old Yavin set and Mon Mothma again.

Hot dawg this looks great! That shot with the AT-AT’s on the beach was amazing. Edwards knows how to direct big-scale imagery, and dang, it looks like he just killed it in this movie. I love that the Empire actually looks threatening now. But who’s that guy in the white cape? I’m totally geeking out over his costume right now. Reminds me of Thrawn from the old novels.

I’m glad that it looks like the story is going to focus more on the characters and how they are affected, which is exactly what they needed to do since we already know the rebels succeed in stealing the plans.

So far, I’m really digging the aesthetic too. It’s grimmer than the main episodes but not unbearably dark like BvS or other ‘‘gritty’’ movies. I think it’s a good change. They needed to differentiate this movie from the main saga. I’m also looking forward to seeing a Star Wars movie not centered on the Skywalker/Solo clan.

So yeah, basically, I’m sold. 😃

For a second, I thought it was the original actress. Then I remembered she would be around 80 now.

Great casting choice though. Whoever that actress is, she nailed the body language and voice of Mon Mothma.

Huh I thought TFA had a lot more color than even the originals did. That’s part of why I liked it so much. The duel in the snow was gorgeous with the red and blue lights. That scene, and the sheer gleefulness and enthusiasm of the cast, was enough to secure multiple viewings from me.

I saw the story less as ‘‘stealing’’ and more as paying homage to the originals personally. I do have a lot of intellectual issues with the story - typical JJ Abrams problems with narrative - but dang it, the things that work, WORK. Poe and Finn’s TIE escape, Rey and Kylo’s duel, the Millennium Falcon chase, the reveal of Luke, and literally every scene with BB-8 😃 are just so solid and perfectly encapsulate everything great about Star Wars. The sense of adventure, camaraderie, destiny, family…its all there, and all of that was missing in the prequels and even - as much as I hate to admit it - a lot of the old EU books. Which I think is why the movie did so well. It captured and distilled the essence of Star Wars into one movie. They needed to ‘‘reboot’’ the series, and bring in new fans, so I understand why they took this route. Even though I may have preferred something more original.

I have a feeling Episode 8 will fix that though. Rian Johnson is a pretty creative film maker, and a better writer than JJ, so I don’t think the next movie will have as many issues story wise.

I’m really hoping we get Luke and Rey on a mission discovering the history of the Jedi, cuz that would be sweet.

Not only was Force Awakens a mediocre copy of superior predecessors, it took a dump on the story’s hitherto happy ending for no reason and soiled it forever. That’s worse than Lucas failing to live up to his own legacy when telling the prequels.

Plus the worst villains in the franchise’s history. Abortions.

Can we trust Disney not to put messages than run counter to Christian values in this film?

While I agree he was insufferable, I do like the Darth Jar Jar theory. 🍿

Ha! When it showed her II thought “no way, she’s in it?” Then the closeup showed it was a different actress. And I remembered it was 30+ years later. :doh2:

That Darth Jar Jar theory on Reddit was so convincing, I really thought it might be true. But then I rewatched the prequels and was like… “Nope. Not buying it.”

If that WAS what Lucas was going for, he’s a worse writer than I thought. Jar Jar acts like a dunce even when no one is around. No way he was actually the villain.

Cool concept though. Kind of wish Lucas handled it better and actually went for it.

I take it that the berobed female Resistance leader from Return of the Jedi is a clip taken from that movie - or else the actress who plays her has aged extraordinarily well.

Added: having taken a second look it must be a completely different actress, though she’s the spitting image of the original one. Probably a clone.

She had filmed some scenes for Revenge of the Sith, but they were deleted from the theatrical release.

This is a “make it for money” attempt. I know how the story ends. An examination of the toys for The Force Awakens shows “a lot of cost cutting means more than quality.”

So, I don’t plan on seeing this.

100% less Jar-Jar good.

100% less midichlorians good.

Kylo Ren was awesome. I was stoked to get a villain with some actual depth, and room to grow. I don’t understand the hate Force Awakens gets for the ‘blow the big station up’ subplot. It isn’t the point of the movie, like it was for New Hope. It’s completely incidental - a stage piece to tell the character story. Jedi ripped off the ‘blow the thing up’ way more than Force Awakens did.

Me too. I loved all his scenes, even the ones where he slashes things up. Adam Driver gave a great performance.

Most of the complaints I see revolve around the fact that he wasn’t as intimidating as Vader, but that was something the movie went out of it’s way to prove, even having Rey tell him '‘you’re afraid you will never be as strong as Darth Vader’ so that complaint doesn’t really make sense to me. 🤷

I really liked the fact that he was more of a lost kid trying to prove himself and live up to his legacy than a pure evil character. That’s a more interesting story to me than making him a typical villain. Because you can’t replicate Vader, it’s just not possible, and the film makers knew that. So instead they made him someone inspired by Vader and struggling to live up to him. That was a smart move and the best direction they could go really. It leaves more possibilities open for his character.

The next movie really needs to explain who Snoke is though. If he’s the real villain of the trilogy, he needs to be something more than a copy of the Emperor. Some kind of ancient evil.

Right, it doesn’t play the same role that the Death Star did in ANH. Sure it was a little disappointing that it was another super-weapon, but I can overlook it because it served more as a background for the character interactions. And that lightsaber battle at the end was absolutely worth a little retread. 👍

That’s interesting. I didn’t know that. Glad she’s getting a chance to play the character again.

Ahahaha. Don’t make me sin, brothers and sisters.

He has absolutely no reason to even want to emulate Vader. He should know Vader went good in the end. His character has absolutely no reason to exist.

He’s hopelessly contrived and a terrible concept.

As for this franchise:

The only new character with depth was Rey. It was nice to see the original characters, but it’s a shame that Leia’s new background was cut out.

The new bad guy was superficial. His face mask looked goofy.
