Personally, I think it would be awesome if Giacchino would include some musical “easter eggs” – ya know, like he uses an augmented form of a Star Trek theme as a slow counter melody in the bass line or something. :bounce:I have my ticket booked for Friday evening, the 16th, in 3D.
For the music – I expect good things, as it’s Michael Giacchino, who did excellent work for that other “Star” franchise. And I’m sure he’ll have some hints at Williams’ original themes, just like he included the original Star Trek theme in his scores for those movies.
In fact, as prolific as Giacchino has been in recent years – just to name a couple, he scored The Incredibles back in 2004, and this year’s Doctor Strange – it might not be a stretch to say he’s the heir apparent to Williams.

We don’t have tickets yet, or a specific plan for seeing the movie. We’re too wrapped up in our own performances between now and then. My son has five performances, and my students have two. I fear if we went to see the movie on the 16th, we’d just fall asleep!
I’ve purposely avoided all trailers so as to not have expectations.
Can’t wait!

I liked The Force Awakens well enough, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this one is better. They get to return to that timeframe that everyone loves, yet not feel pressured or confined with regards to the iconic characters (who will be largely absent). It could give them the opportunity to do some interesting things.
My central problem with The Force Awakens was that it was a mish-mash of very familiar elements from the previous movies, without any character of its own. To the extent that this movie will be, as you say, free from the need to imitate the other movies in order to give the audience something familiar, it should be interesting. (I’m still wondering if Maz was mad at Han Solo for inadvertently leading the First Order to her planet … and I’m still wondering why everyone was looking for Luke Skywalker and why so many people had to die due to his hiding out and if he felt any regret for those deaths.)
The Force Awakens was bland. The only character that was fleshed out well was Rey. The new bad guy was this psycho without the cold, calculating ability to run anything, much less be a Commander for the First Order. I don’t know how Rogue One will fare.
Yeah for him to be compelling he would need a reason for his evilness, yet none was provided. He just seemed to want to be evil because it was cool.
Rey struck me as a Mary Sue character but she’s a lot better than Kylo Ren who did not have the threat and menace of Darth Vader. He was like a teenager caught in a perpetual tantrum.
