“Mary Sue.” Another thing to add to my list of words and terms to forget. Heroic characters are usually larger than life/the average person. Always will be.

I don’t know if Rogue One will be good, but I’m excited for it. As for TFA, I’m withholding judgement until the trilogy is complete. The new characters certainly need more fleshing out.
 
If you say so. Finn… he may have heard of a light saber, but without any training, just handles it like a master? Far-fetched, even for fiction.

Finn had weapons training since he was a young child. That training was his whole identity. He may not have handled a light saber, but he would have had close arms training, so I gave him a pass on that. As for Kylo Ren, he was played better than adult Anakin in the prequels. I highly doubt that they will not delve into his past, so I’m not judging his lack of development yet.

Right. By the end of the first Star Wars movie, we didn’t know anything about Darth Vader’s back story. For all we knew, he didn’t have one. I suppose they could have done the same thing for Kylo Ren and never had him remove his mask. Then he might have come across as more imposing. But then the movie really would have been a knock off of the original. 😛 It is in taking off the mask and revealing his back story that Kylo (or Ren?) comes across the most like a “whiny teenager”. But he can’t really be much older than what he is for him to be Han and Leia’s son.

I do imagine they’ll flesh things out a bit in the subsequent movies. I am sure they are holding a few trump cards in the storyline to play in Episodes 8 and 9. We’ll see if they pay off or not, I suppose.
 
In TFA, I liked the part where Finn says to Solo upon planning to storm the building, when Solo learns Finn only worked in sanitation… “We will just use the force”, and Solo says “it doesnt work that way”.

I watched the prequels recently and now have got Hayden Christiansen’s voice (as Darth Vader) in my head petulantly complaining about nobody treating him right. “Obi-wan just doesn’t understand …”

I rewatched the prequels recently and Hayden Christiansen as Darth Vader sure did a lot of petulant whining. So much so I can hear his drawly voice in my head saying 'Obi-wan just doesn’t understand, nobody gets me, woe is me …" It’s almost like he was trying to channel James Dean.
 
I will see it after the new year when the theaters are less crowded. I thought TFA was decent but not nearly as good as everyone was making it out to be. It was basically a soft reboot of Episode IV. I think Rogue One has the potential to be more interesting and exciting since they presumably won’t have to worry about making a sequel to it, and we all know how the story ends anyway.
 
I’m mixed on this. I will probably see it after the initial wave. But something about this and the spinoff from Harry Potter bothers me. It’s blatant raking in of every last done they can. That being said, like any addict, I’m sure I’ll partake again.

But it just doesn’t feel right.

I disagree Kylo ren was a wonderful villain. I rank him third in Star Wars villains. Vader, maul, ren, duku, the emperor, hutt, fett, etc. I also thought he was very cold and calculating. Especially when he played his own father’s emotions and coldly disposed of him without a second thought. A perfect example of crocodile tears.

Keep in mind, ren is not a polished leader. He is a young sith, apprentice. Much like anikin, his emotional side is being exploited at a youthful age by the dark side. In many ways I think he is colder and even more powerful than Vader. Not to mention what happened to the young Jedi in the school for Jedi that Luke was teaching. Geesh, Vader couldn’t kill his son but ren had no problem commiting patricide.

It’s brilliant!

This movie will not matter like the original three, because Force Awakens ruins the future in such a banal way with its screamingly bad villains erasing all progress. The main storyline is uninteresting and irredeemable now, what more for a side-story?

But like all future Star Wars films, it’s guaranteed to rake in all the cash and be a massive success with critics and audiences.

People grow very attached to these fictional universes and we jump at the chance to return to them. That’s why there were 3 Hobbit movies. I’m still waiting for the 72 part Silmarillion. 😛

I have been avoiding any adverts or trailers for Rogue One so as to not have any expectations. And then you go and use the words “unique” and “moving,” even qualifying them with the adverb “very.”

I am of mixed minds about it:
  • On the one hand, I *do not *want the Force to play in the movie – A the time of *A New Hope *Darth Vader was the last devotee of that “ancient religion” – That would leave the movie in the genre of bad space fantasy :twocents:
  • On the other hand, from previews, it looks like the Force *does *play a role 😦
  • On another hand, the previews look pretty good – Probably better than The Force Awakens
  • … 🍿
I’ll tell you what would seal the deal for me – If they would put Carrie Fisher in the movie, and use that youthening software, such as was utilized on MIchael Douglas (Ant-man), Robert Downey Jr (Captain America: Civil War), and Jeff Bridges (TRON: Legacy).

A couple of things. Star Wars is incredibly inconsistent with the idea of “the force”. They certainly can work around the darth Vader issue because, the religion could be the structure of the hierarchy of sith and Jedi. That could be viewed as almost extinct in the scene you refer to.
Outside of the movies the force has been used to suggest that many are " force sensitive" like in the Rebels storyline. With possible “secret hidden Jedi”.

But one wonders why in 5 minutes and an obsticle course with yoda, Luke masters all the Jedi skills, but with anakin it took years.

Also I was terribly dissapointed in Carrie Fischer just being some general in the FA. Why is it that the rebels seem to only have six pilots and lose five of them every time?
Why does Lea have almost no skills with the force except that she can feel Han die. She was supposed to be the other option for a Jedi if Luke didn’t work out. But yet, nothing.
Rey is whipping a light saber around and Lea has no skill at all!? Also, her mind was " broken into" by Vader but it’s becoming obvious with the force awakens that a potential Jedi can resist the mind tricks.
