Rogue priest asks clergy to push Knights from parishes, exploit insurance policies [CNA]

Fresno, Calif., Jul 2, 2009 / 06:43 am (CNA).- Citing the organization’s support for traditional marriage, a suspended Catholic priest who has turned to homosexual activism has called for Catholic pastors to block Knights of Columbus groups from their parishes and to borrow against the order’s insurance policies to fund homosexual groups.

He said he advocated such action in part because the fraternal charitable organization helped support California’s Proposition 8, which restored legal marriage’s definition to being between a man and a woman.

Fr. Geoffrey Farrow, former pastor of the St. Paul Newman Center at California State University at Fresno, was removed as pastor in October 2008 for defying church teaching on homosexuality and for condemning Catholic support for Proposition 8, the California Catholic Daily reports.

“Borrow the full amount against your Knights of Columbus life insurance policy immediately,” he advised. “Take the check and invest the funds with an LGBT friendly fund. Do not pay back the loan.”

If Fr. Farrow had actually suggested that, it would be lowdown and worthy of contempt.

But he didn’t.

Here is what he wrote in his blog:

  1. Divest the full amount of your Knights of Columbus life insurance policy immediately. Take the check and invest the funds with an LGBT friendly fund. If every priest and K of C insurance policy holder were to do this, it would create a considerable capital drain on K of C and cripple their ability to write large checks to thwart LGBT legislation and ballot initiatives.

The difference between reinvesting parish funds and taking out a loan with no intention to pay it back is rather enormous. I am very surprised that Catholic News Agency would report such an extreme charge without making any attempt at fact-checking.
 
Goes to show that the most vicious enemies of the Church…are within, or claim to be within the Church.

Voice of the Faithful, another such brood of vipers. The two men responsible for legislation that would’ve given Connecticut control of Catholic parishes were believed to be members (or at least one of them) of such a group, or at least had this group’s support.

I am opposed to news articles which report false information.

I think it reasonable to take offense at Fr. Farrow’s attempt to punish the Knights of Columbus. But that doesn’t mean that false quotes should be attributed to him.

Unfortunately, the same could be said about the above comment.

For example, is it not possible that:
Fr. posted the “borrow” directive originally?
The news report is correct based on then-known facts?
Fr. “fixed” his blog posting after being excoriated?

It is surprising that a Catholic news service would fabricate long quotes from a public site.
It is not surprising that one who is (to borrow a phrase) “keen for vain things and dull for things eternal,” as Father appears to be, might, uh, …misrepresent… himself.

You need to demonstrate that CNA falsified its report.

It has not yet been demonstrated that the quotes are falsely attributed to Fr. Farrow.
 
What a disgrace. How does someone like this get ordained?
 
I think the Venerable Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus and a faithful priest of Holy Mother Church, would want us to pray for the soul of Fr. Farrow, an obviously confused and angry individual. He, like many people, has chosen to direct his aggression to a particular group, in this case the KofC’s. I say, that’s fine. We’re the Knights. We can take it.

To me, this is a call to strengthen and bolster the ranks and works of the Knights. We’re one of the most active and generous service organizations in existence. And if people in the world feel the need to attack us for our actions and loyalty to Christ’s Church, we must be doing something right.

When attacking what is right and good, go for the strongest supporters of what is right and good in the Catholic Church in the world. Bring it on, we will pray for your soul, soon not to be ‘Father’ Farrow. We love you and want you to come back to the Church, please stop disobeying the Church teachings.

Oh, yes, guilty until proven innocent. If CNA can show that Fr. Farrow changed his blog in reaction to their story, I would very much be interested in seeing their evidence.

There is at least one scenario wherein the CNA report is true.
Yet you have charged CNA with fabricating quotes.

It seems to me that that what he did is extreme enough. Well, the bishops chose to let
homosexuals become/stay priests and now they are reaping the blighted harvest.

Okay, true enough. I will back off my accusation, and merely point out that the blog does not say what CNA claimed it said. You are right, I overstepped and I apologize for that.
 
Do you not know how the Internet works? What a page says at any given moment in time is not proof of what it said in the past.
