Hello… many, many thanks to all now I got the point, the sources of the why, when the “Roman” word was “stuck” with the “Catholic Church” and some additional information that I did not expect to come out of this thread.

Thanks a lot, and may the Lord bless you all.

May the peace and blessings be with you all.👍

I totally agree that the RCC and the CC are the same thing. I just don’t understand why you got so upset with my comment about wikipedia. There are many good Church sources to quote from (after all we are a Catholic forum) and I don’t understand why people (you, in this case) go to wikipedia to get information or as proof for an argument. As far as people thinking you think it is “the authority on everything” - you’re the one who quoted from it. What else are we to believe?
Oh My Goodness.

It’s because I like using Wikipedia, and find it very helpful. It doesn’t mean I think it’s the best source in the whole wide world. I was just giving an example. That’s all. And then y’all have to go and get all upset over the fact of the source. I could see if it were Satan.com or something, but gee, Wikipedia? Big deal?!

Maybe, my dear, you misread what I wrote originally. I said “I am continually amazed at how many people quote wikipedia as an authority on everything. Not too long agl one of its editors was outed for being a phony.”

I wasn’t ‘all upset.’ I was making an observation. Methinks thou doth protest too much.

Not true. While I am just as much a Catholic as any other Catholic on this forum, I am not a Roman Catholic… nor are the members of any of the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches who, in communion with the Latin (Roman) Church, make up Catholicism today . To say that the Roman Catholic Church is the Catholic Church is to do a disservice to Eastern Catholics everywhere. Yes, we are in full communion with the See of Peter and yes, Benedict XVI is our pope as well and yes, Roman Catholics are absolutely free to partake of the sacraments in my Church, and I in theirs… that’s what being “in communion with” is all about. We are fully Catholic in every sense of the word… but we are not Roman Catholics.

Because the membership of the Roman (Latin) Catholic Church far, FAR outnumbers the membership of all 22 Eastern Catholic Churches combined, most of the world, especially the media, makes the same (mistaken) assumption that you did, as quoted above. This mistake is frustrating but somewhat understandable coming from those outside of Catholicism - it is, however, inexcusable, IMHO, coming from fellow Catholics who should know better and, in fact, were actually instructed to know better by our late Holy Father +John Paul II in his 1995 Apostolic Letter, Orientale Lumen (Light of the East).

All Roman Catholics are Catholics… all Catholics are not Roman Catholics.

I live in the United States and I am a Catholic. You can ask any number of people what their understanding of the terms Roman Catholic and Catholic are and they would give you the same answer and that in their minds the names are interchangeable. Now, in the Ukraine or some other Eastern country the understanding might be different and more than likely is.

I am not saying the others are not Catholic - they are - but in our country Roman Catholic IS Catholic and vice versa.

(There was a thread I was following about calling the United States - America - and its citizens American - even though we are only one nation in the Americas. Kind of the same thing. Perception. And not just here but throughout the world.)

I say again - your statement is simply not true, no matter how loudly you proclaim it or how often you repeat it. I, too, live in the United States (born and raised) and I, too, am a Catholic. I am, however, a Byzantine Catholic and not a Roman Catholic. Despite the differing adjectives we place in front of the word “Catholic” when describing ourselves, we are each every bit as Catholic as the other. And we share full communion with each other through our membership in the Catholic Church, not the Roman Catholic Church.

It matters not what “any number of people” think the Catholic Church is - what matters is what Rome says it is. And it matters not that we live in a country where, admittedly, people continue to incorrectly interchange the terms Catholic Church and Roman Catholic Church - their (your) ongoing error, no matter how oft repeated, does not make it true. As I said earlier, this continual use of improper terminology when describing our Catholic Church is somewhat understandable given our society’s overall lack of factual understanding of the true nature and make-up of our Catholic Church. What is sadly distressing to me as a Catholic, however, is to see this error in terminology not only ignored by fellow Catholics, but even perpetuated by some, as is evident in your posts. If we Catholics cannot count on fellow Catholics to correct this sort of misinformation, who then can we count on?

Again, I stress to you that I type this from my desk just outside of Chicago… nowhere near “the Ukraine or some other Eastern country.” 😉 And in “our country,” Catholicism does not automatically imply Roman Catholicism, no matter how many people, fellow Catholics included, would like you to believe that it does.

While I agree with you when you say that “…in our country Roman Catholic IS Catholic…,” I must strongly disagreee with the “vice versa” part that immediately follows this statement.

Thank you for putting me in my place without making me feel too stupid 🙂 I have a lot to learn and you just taught me a thing or three today. I will have to think on this a bit more, but I can truly understand what you are saying. As a struggling ‘neophyte’ (not really, in the strict definition of the term, but in knowledge) I guess I really haven’t looked outside the walls of my own Church (and church.)

So much to learn. I’m getting old - so little time.

Susan,

I’m truly glad you understand. We Byzantine Catholics tend to get “lost in the shuffle” of Catholicism, especially here in the USA! This is due in no small part to the overriding assumption (as pointed out) that all Catholics are Roman Catholics (granted, our miniscule size when compared to our Roman brethren doesn’t help either! 😉 ). The fact is, we Byzantine Catholics share a common faith with our Roman Catholic brethren, despite the fact that how we liturgically express that faith may be very different from what you and most Roman Catholics may be used to.

If you ever get up around Chicago, look me up! I’d be honored to treat you to a Sunday Divine Liturgy (Mass, as the Romans call it) that’ll absolutely knock your socks off!..

byzantinecatholic.com/

…AND, since we’re in full communion with the Pope of Rome and, therefore, just as Catholic as any Roman Catholic parish, it will fulfill your Sunday obligation! 🙂

Take care!

I gotta tell ya - I’m glad youse guys left me out of the shooting match.

🤷

Subrosa
I’m not “shooting” anyone, I just want people to use the correct names for things, because words have real meanings and meanings have consequences for what people think and do in real life. So you might consider correcting your profile description of yourself as “Roman Catholic” not to mention “Lay Eucharistic Minister”. Neither thing exists.

Now, I learned early today that there are Roman Catholics who are Catholic but that not all Catholics are Roman Catholic 😃
The term Roman Catholic does exist. Here is one link:

No it doesn’t. The term does not appear anywhere on that page.

Okay, I went back and re-read it and I think I see where you are headed. Before I mis-understand, could you explain? 🙂

As mentioned on another thread
forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=173311&page=7

You mean that you are a member of the Latin rite of the Catholic Church. Sometimes inaccurately and misleadingly called the Western Rite or the Roman Rite.
It is wrong to call the Latin rite “the Roman Catholic Church” as it does not have that title.
It is doubly wrong, as well as insulting to the members of all the Eastern Catholic churches, to use this name for the Catholic Church as a whole.
It is triply wrong to use it given its well-known origin and history as a term of abuse which is commonly exploited by anti-Catholic bigots today.

I do humbly and sincerely apologize if I have offended you. You are the Catholic Church.
Yes, you repeatedly offend me when you continuly use RCC to refer to my church. Apology accepted.
Of course that does not change the fact that you left the church that Christ founded and went in to schism (developed new and innovative doctrines and continue to).
Oops, knew there was a catch to that apology. Sounds more like I’m sorry but… and anytime you add the but, it really just is trying to justify your own actions and really isn’t an apology.

But it does prove my point that most people who choose to use that term, after being informed of its offense, do so to try to state their beliefs by doing so. Yours have been quite clear on this for some time.
You have a right to do that. You certainly do not answer to me. I think though the facts are on the side of Orthodoxy.
I disagree.
You are welcome to call yourself anything you like just like frnate has the same right to call his group a Catholic Church.
And history and documents show that we have always done so.
Perhaps we could call yours the Catholic Church HQed in Rome or the Catholic church founded in 1054??🤷 WHat is preferable if the Orthodox IS the Church founded by Christ. How should we differentiate to everyones satisfaction and in order to offend no one including frnate and the numerous other groups who call themselves the Catholic Church?

Rev North
Again, another attempt to place your beliefs in the name of my church.

We are the Catholic Church. We were founded by Christ.

I really don’t care how you choose to differentiate anywhere else, but here, as it is a Catholic website, no one will be confused by simply using CC. But then, you really know that, don’t you.

I am truly sorry if you feel insulted. I would point out that sweeping generalizations are never accurate. I believe you would be better served if you would take us at our word when we say it is not intended as insult. I will admit there are those who do say and believe what you accuse us of. I assure you, I am not that ignorant.

Peace,
+N
Thank you. I do feel insulted when people continue to use that term, RCC, even when told that it is insulting and a name placed on our church by the reformers in order for them to continue to use the term catholic, but divorce themselves from the authority of the Catholic Church. Last time I read, when someone divorces another, they are not allowed to change the other parties name only their own.

I will take you at your word. But now that you know that it is insulting to refer to the Church who is united with the Pope as RCC as well as inaccurate, surely you can refrain from doing so, at least here in these forums?

Peace and God Bless,
Maria

Yes, it is an insult to our Catholic brethren united with the pope to say that Roman Catholic and Catholic means the same thing.

It doesn’t.

And when one learns the facts, one should learn to revise their language and views when confronted by history and facts.

I am a Christian. I am a Roman Rite Catholic. Oops, to be more accurate and not at all misleading, I am a Latin Rite CAtholic;) I belong to the Catholic Church.

And see, below is a perfect example of how one can learn and grow. I know, I used to be ignorant also and did not realize how our Catholic brethren felt about the term Roman Catholic used to refer to all the church in communion with the pope! There is no shame in not knowing things. The only shame is when one does not put knowledge learned to use:)
Thank you for putting me in my place without making me feel too stupid 🙂 I have a lot to learn and you just taught me a thing or three today. Last I checked, I was a devout NON-reformer so your counter-reformation complaint against their intent doesn’t apply to me. I am not guilty of that particular sin. To lay it on me and those like me is irrational.
Last time I read, when someone divorces another, they are not allowed to change the other parties name only their own.
Nor can they be required to change their own name. That is kind of the point is it not? For the Patriarchate of Rome seems to (mistakenly) think that she has exclusive right to the term “Catholic.” For those who know better, referring to her as “Roman” is simply a way of distinguishing between jurisdictions. I am personally willing to consider alternatives to actually using the phrase “Roman Catholic,” do you have any suggestions for a better way to distinguish between jurisdictions?

I thought these were Catholic forums. Therein lies the rub, I must also refrain from referring to the Church who is united with the Pope as the Catholic Church, since that is also insulting and inaccurate. So now what?

Please keep in mind that while I do speak here with all candor, I do NOT do so with ANY rancor.
Peace and God Bless,
Maria
Right back atcha.

(Sorry about the delay in replying, I had some Church obligations and of course I had to take four days out to read the new Harry Potter.) 😃

I tell you what, why don’t you go and tell all the other churches that they’re not allowed to use the name “Orthodox” (because every Christian thinks his own church is orthodox i.e. has the correct belief), nor “Episcopal” (because many other churches believe they have valid bishops), nor “Presbyterian” (because many other churches believe they have valid priests/presbyters/elders); nor “Baptist” because all other Christian groups practise baptism; and of course “Church of Christ” and “Church of the Nazarene” are out too, because we all claim to be that. And “Full Gospel Church” is a no-no because we all claim to follow the full gospel.

And of course you would have to remove the “offensive” word “charismatic” from your group’s name, because we all believe we have charisms (gifts of the Holy Spirit, or according to your own definition of charismatic, we are all “filled with the love of God for all His people”). And while you’re at it, tell off those other groups “The Charismatic Catholic Church”, and “The Charismatic Catholic Church of America” which you tell us are NOT connected with your group, “The Catholic Charismatic Church”. (You sound like that scene from Monty Python’s Life of Bryan about the “People’s Front of Judea”, not to be confused with the “Judean People’s Front” etc.😃 )

Why don’t you get back to us when you’ve got replies from all these groups? Then we’ll see what we can do about changing the name which our billions of members and billions more outsiders have used for us for 1900+ years, so that it’s less “offensive” to your organisation which (mea culpa I’m sure) I’ve never heard of other than through your posts here?

Or alternatively you could just behave like a grown-up.

I think if CC causes less offense than RCC then that is fine with me. BUT…realize that you should not offend anyone when they refer to themselves as “Catholics”, Anglo Catholics or otherwise. Similarly, nor should you refer to those who are not CC as “Protestants” since some consider that term to be pejorative.

Rev North (who is trying to negotiate the politically correct path)

And we can see here from the continued use of RCC instead of CC or Catholic Church as is our official name, that it truly is an insult, and nothing more.

In the official documents of the Catholic church, she only refers to herself as the Catholic Church or simply the Church, only using Roman to differentiate between different rites within the Church. This has been so before the Reformation after the Reformation and before and after the schism between Orthodox and Catholic.

Those who Call us Roman, or RCC only do so in an attempt to state their beliefs that the Catholic Church is not the Church Christ founded.

We are the Catholic Church.
The term Roman Catholic, Roman church, Roman etc, is use throughout the documents of the western church. They didnt feel that the term was wrong. And if this term is wrong there are a lot of local ROMAN Cathollic church signs in our area which need changing.

Oh, and by the way, I was Roman Catholic for many years and was proud of it. I didnt need some politically correct way of calling myself anything else.
