I own 5 Roman Catholic english bibles from which I read daily:
  1. Duoay Rheims Challoner Bible
  2. New American Bible
  3. Confraternity Bible
  4. New Jerusalem Bible
  5. New Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition
Which of these 5 do you like best? Would you include the Knox Bible in this list?

My favorite of all of them is the Catholic New Revised Standard, particularly for Scripture study. I love the beauty of the language in both the Douay-Rheims & Jerusalem Bible. The New American is my least favorite, though I am not familiar with the Confraternity version.

Inclusive language wrecks the NRSV for me; the NAB is bland and ecumenical; the Douay is nice but the KJV blows its socks off; NJB also weakened by ecumenism and inclusive language. The Confraternity is best of this crew, in my book.

My favorite Bible translations: the ones that correctly translate the Magnificat (I believe there are two)…

That video is awesome.

  1. Confraternity
  2. D-R
  3. Knox (don’t have one yet)
4/5. Any “New” bible is a distant last place.

I grew up with the KJV but cannot read it now without being distracted by the nagging thought in the back of my mind that it is missing huge chunks in the OT and has a word inserted in the NT which should not be there…as the video link above shows so well. I’ve saved that video, it will come in useful! 😉

The one published by the Catholic Truth Society (publishers for the Holy See in the UK) seems to be quite widely used here and I find it a very useful version which manages (at least to my simple eyes) to avoid some of the ecumenism and inclusive language of other modern versions while retaining some of poetry of the Douay-Rheims.

But like many people, I have several versions and read back and forth between them.

Get rid of 5) and get yourself the Ignatius Study bible which is based on RSV-CE2. I would certainly include the Knox Bible.

  1. Doauy Rheims
have not read confraternity Bible so not completely sure 🤷

God bless

I would rank your choices:

Confraternity
Douay Rheims
----- insert Knox suggestion here
New American
New Jerusalem
NRSV

However, for me personally i dont care for the last 3. But everyone has different tastes so if you find value and enjoyment in them by all means keep reading. They are all good translations (though some people hate the notes in the NAB and NJB) just not my style.
