Yes - this is extremely important to recognize…However there is also Mt 22:36-40 where all the law is reduced to just two commands. Love God and Love neighbor. So - Can one Love God (fulfill the greatest commandment) without faith? Likewise can one love neighbor as themselves without works? How are we to interpret Mt. 25:31-46? Neither faith nor grace is mentioned. It’s all about works – do these works, go to heaven, don’t do these works, go to hell, is what it says.
To me - these passages - along with another about those who cry “Lord Lord”…speak to another and more fundamental aspect of salvation. Agape…Faith - works - what do they mean without Agape - without Love.
St John says this:
7 Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God; for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)
Reading Mt 25 we see love in selfless action - and Love MUST act selflessly for love without selfless action is not Love at all.
Peace
James
