DUBAI: A group claiming links to A Qaeda threatened to attack Rome to punish Italy for supporting the United States, and praised the bomb blasts in London, a web statement said yesterday.
“We warn Rome, the capital of infidels, that the lions of Jihad in Europe are ready to launch strong strikes against the collaborating government with the crusaders, the Americans, the enemies of God, the Prophet and Muslims,” it said.
Leaders of the Parliament, Foreign Ministry, Interior Ministry, Secret Service and military met nearly around the clock late Thursday through Friday, “evaluating the terrorist menace in Italy and the strengthening preventive security measures,” the Interior Ministry said.
The pace of the meetings was a tacit acknowledgment of what virtually all Italian media highlighted Friday, in the words of Il Messaggero, an Italian daily newspaper: “Now an attack in our house is more likely than ever.”
