The American Welfare State How We Spend Nearly $1 Trillion a Year Fighting Poverty—and Fail

…Clearly we are doing something wrong. Throwing money at the problem has neither reduced poverty nor made the poor self-sufficient. It is time to reevaluate our approach to fighting poverty. We should focus less on making poverty more comfortable and more on creating the prosperity that will get people out of poverty.
Good thought. I have learned in my working years that people appreciate that for which they have to work. I am not opposed at all to welfare for those who truly need it, but they should be required to earn it in some way. That is what Romney meant by the dignity of work. Those of us who do work do not get something for nothing. Those on welfare should be treated accordingly.

I am pretty sure the unions would object to welfare people taking their work.

What is our exit strategy for the war on poverty? After millions of wasted lives and trillions of dollars its time to declare victory (or defeat) and end it.

With this statement, if you are correct, you are proving the Rosen is a complete idiot that should keep her mouth shut. If this is what she said then she assumes that only people with an experience about a specific situation know about that situation. Using such assumption then we should discredit the president and most of the politicians from running the country because they have no idea of what people think.
Saying one small thing that could be taken out of context doesn’t make someone a “complete idiot”. She didn’t say “only people with an experience about a specific situation know about that situation”, she said in effect “Ann Romney is not an expert or even well-informed about the issue”.

But if you think she “should keep her mouth shut” because of it, then doesn’t the same apply to Mitt Romney, for saying that stay-at-home mothers don’t have the “dignity” of work? For saying that poor women are lacking in “dignity” for choosing the option to stay at home with their children?

The more I look into this statement by Romney, the worse his statement gets. He is bringing back the whole “welfare queens” lie that Reagan used to distract the country from the fact that the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer under the current system, that the entitled, born-rich people like Mitt Romney are paying a lower tax percentage than the working class. It’s a disgrace for Romney to complain about poor people.

Is Rosen an expert about Ann Romney’s thinking? No, thus according to her own logic she should just shut up. I do not apply the same principle to Mitt Romnay, or the POTUS or other politicians because they did not try to apply that logic. It is called the principle of non contradiction.

Here is the full quote, below. Romney clearly insults the work done by stay-at-home moms, saying it lacks dignity at best and isn’t even work at worst. He says stay-at-home moms have no dignity of work and have to leave the home to get it. It’s really insulting. If he meant it, it’s time he apologizes.

Romney:
You are misreading it. The lack of dignity comes from living off of welfare, not from staying home caring for children. Staying home with children is UNPAID work. Welfare is not employment and shouldn’t be treated as such.
Exactly. He did not say that being a stay-at-home mom lacks dignity. He said that the inability to work and provide for your family and having to live on a welfare check lacks dignity.

One clarification (and you know I love ya rlg), it’s not the “inability to work” that is the problem. Indeed, I don’t think there is any criticism of those unable to work. Rather it is those with ability, yet still choose to live on a welfare check that is the problem.

You know, I think this is a spectacularly good point.

Had Rosen said something along the lines of “I don’t think Mrs. Romney really knows what it is to be a working mom. I’m a working mom, and I know what it is like. And my experience and my conversations with working women tell me that women do care about…”

Had that been her lead-in, I don’t think there would have been any dust-up.

You’re right…poor choice in words. It is not what I meant. Working to provide for one’s family is what gives one personal dignity, and the inability to do that is an affront to dignity. In other words, we should do what we can to help people get into the workforce, so their dignity can be restored.

Someone who is physically/mentally unable is a totally different story…
