Roomate and masterbation

What if you use the ‘sexual faculty’ in this manner not to derive pleasure, but just to get rid of a distraction. Is it still gravely disordered? It seems that it wouldn’t fit under this CCC section in that case.
It doesn’t get rid of any distraction, or if it does, what takes the place of the distraction (whatever that distraction may be) is worse than the distraction…

Sin damages a person whatever the intent may be…

If a person runs over a dog, the dog is just as dead whether the person intended to run over it or did not intend to…

SpiritMeadow- how can you call this an obsession over a roommate’s masturbation? He was simply asking if there is an appropriate action to take, because he was concerned for his roommate’s soul.

As a Catholic what is our obligation to try and protect others from sin? If someone was stealing, would it not be our place to at least tell them that this is wrong? If a women is considering an abortion, should we not tell them that there is a life within them and that ending that life would be a grave sin? Why in some situations can we help our fellow man by telling them the truth when it comes to sin but not in others?

Masturbation is a gravely disordered sin that can separate us from God. Yes, it would be awkward to talk about, but is the greater goal of helping others to not sin more important? Why do you (SpiritMeadow) see the OP’s question as a disordered obsession? When the OP is only trying to do what is right?
You fail to realize that the vast majority of the world would not consider that anyone’s soul was in danger from masterbation. So yes, he interest in what he should do is simply not appropriate.

Some here on this forum have adopted the southern baptist idea that we are supposed to make comment on other people who are not following what are determined by the person to be Catholic norms. Professionals are there for proselytizing. We show our Christianity, or we used to BY THE WAY WE LIVE, not by admonishing others about their way of life.

No I would not be telling anyone that they were sinning about anything. I might well advise them of certain pitfalls regarding the subject but certainly I would never call someone sinful or their behavior or proposed behavior. This is exactly the reason why some non-religious people push so hard to keep religion out of everyday life–people harass others with their religious beliefs.

As I said, most people do not consider masterbation a grave sin, or a sin at all. You have no right to assault another, especially if you don’t know anything about their religious affilitation. If they are Catholic, I still say no, but at least you are on the same turf.

There is simply an arrogance associated with anyone proporting to tell another that their action is sinful. Jesus tried to get that point across, but obviously has failed miserably. He tried several times as I recall.

Oh lighten up please. This was spoken in humor. The advise you are flinging around here with relative moralism is gravely disordered and un-Catholic. It is so typical of the liberal conditon to not see the profound hypocrisy in itself. My advise - get some some serious counseling and stop promoting your own opinions as if they are authorative.

I am offering no advice. I offered an opinion. I have no where stated it is authoritative. I hope you are not attempting to speak authoritatively either. Slinging your favorite pejorative labels is part of the profound hypocrisy of the religious right. My advice is to find out why you are so trapped in the need for certainty in your world that you must twist scripture and religion in this manner.

And my views are hardly unCatholic. They may well be UnCAF Catholic, but that is not particularly worrisome obviously.

This is kind of an odd question.

I am in college and i live on campus with a roommate. I accidentally walked in on him while he was masturbating (well he realized i was coming and stopped, but it was obvious).

Do you all think i should say anything to him?
O you never had any brothers lol.it happens .Do noting that what i would do.

So you are admitting then that you have no orthodox theological substance to back up your opinion? Thanks for at least being honest even though it comes across a tad bit insincere when spoken in proximity to your condescending tone here about “CAF Catholics”, the “religious right” (whoever that is) and to those who you project as beneath your superior maturity level.

So, is it fair to surmise from your comments that you might find it tolerable for the OP to offer an opinion to the roommate that ‘its not cool to masturbate and some people even hold the opinion that it might land then in hell’? Or are you sticking to your old Pollyanna sort of mindset of “see no evil”, “speak no evil”, “say no evil”, “do no evil” unless the person is from the religious right? 😊

No, I have not claimed that my opinion is unorthodox. I leave that to you who apparently claim authority to reach such conclusions. I am no more condenscending than yourself and offering that I need counseling. I’m sorry you don’t realize that frequenters of this forum often are from the far right. This is not what most of us see in our own parishes.

Again, I project nothing about maturity levels. I am again sorry you are so ill informed that you have no idea what the religious right is. You should google it and become informed. There are no doubt millions of entries.

I claim purely that it is none of his business. The incident was accidental as he portrayed it. If the room mate were to continue to publically do so, that would be another story. I would ask him to seek privacy. It would be simple embarassment to me. I love how this ultra right Catholicism has adopted the assault approach previously the venue of Jehovah’s witnesses. Do you guys toss a coin for which corner you set up on? I find such prosyletzing fruiltless, insulting, assaultive and unbecoming a Catholic. At least that’s what the nuns used to tell me. I just agreed they were right.

You might want to look up the history of CA. You will find that this promotion of in your face evangelism is a direct result of why it was formed. They decided to be just like the people they were opposed to and use the same tactics. Never the moral highground!

SpiritMeadow,

I invite you to leave this discussion. It is apparrent your intent is not to help Pio S in advising of an appropriate course of action to take, instead you throw insults at people with uncited baseless claims. An intelligent person will not be converted by your own “assualts” against them, Ex: “Religious Right”, “Like Southern Baptists”, “Jehovah’s Witnesses.” Not only do you insult the members of this board, you insult the members of those different denominations which we are called to be charitible to in the hope that they too will join us in Communion with the Catholic Church. I also invite you to re-read the forum rules as using terms like these in a pejorative way is prohibited.
