ALBANY, Ore. — Never did Jaime Salazar imagine that wearing a rosarylike crucifix to school would provoke a national stir.
But when Salazar, 14, and his 16-year-old friend Marco Castro were suspended recently for refusing to remove the religious beads because they were “gang-related,” it thrust the issue into the headlines and has triggered questions over the evolving role of rosaries in religion, fashion and street gangs.

In the latest cultural take on a symbol that has gone from Catholic altars to Britney Spears’ bosom, the rosary is blurring the lines of liberty and safety on campus.

Some call the rosary-gang connection a stretch and urge caution. But for educators and public safety officials charged with blocking fluid gang trends, rosaries have become one more marker to track suspicious activity.

“It’s become part of the look,” said Victor Castro, a detective and school resource officer who leads gang awareness training in Hillsboro, Ore. “They use it as a reminder of protection.”

Salazar and Marco Castro said the necklaces were gifts from their mothers, worn mainly for sentimental reasons and because they liked the way the necklaces look.

Officials at South Albany High School said policy prevents them from offering details about the suspensions. “There’s more to the story, but because the boys are minors, we can’t talk about it,” said Jim Haggart, assistant to the local schools superintendent.

Surrounded by rosaries at the Rosary Shop in McMinnville, shop owner Seth Murray is troubled by the idea of such a sacred symbol associated with gangs. He said public officials should focus on behavior, not rosaries.

“If someone is engaged in violence, it doesn’t matter whether they’re wearing a rosary,” he said. “You should not seek people out for that reason.”

Over the years, the shop owner has grown all too familiar with the changing face of rosaries in contemporary culture. As celebrities such as Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan have taken to donning rosaries on coffee runs, Murray said other rosary makers began to grumble over the use, calling it inappropriate.

One customer asked Murray to fashion a dark rosary similar to the Dolce & Gabbana one sported by a shirtless David Beckham on the cover of Vanity Fair.

“If somebody would like a rosary, we’ll provide it,” Murray said, adding that when he sells it, he remains hopeful that the buyer will become curious about God and “it will turn into more.”

Salazar said he knows exactly what a rosary is, and that’s not what he was wearing. It was a baby blue, beaded crucifix, he said, that makes him think of his mother.

Salazar said his problems began last month when Principal Chris Equinoa asked him to put away the crucifix, which he was wearing as a necklace.

“He told me it was a rosary, and it was gang-related,” said Salazar, who now carries the crucifix in his pocket. “I told him ‘No, it’s not a rosary. It’s a necklace and it’s Catholic.’”

When Equinoa asked him to go to the office, Salazar said he went home. Later, he received a letter notifying him he was suspended for five days for defiance and gang-related behavior.

His friend, Castro, told the local newspaper that Equinoa approached him the same day about his rosary, a white string of beads with a cross and an image of the Virgin Mary. He put it away but wore it the next day, then refused to remove it. He was suspended for three days.

Salazar said he is not a gangster and does not dress like one. The suspension attracted much attention on television and online, but it is not the first of its kind. A similar case involving two students in New Caney, Texas, who were prohibited from wearing rosaries because they were considered gang-related ended up in a court in 1997. The judge ruled in favor of the boys, calling the school policy vague.

Changing gang trends leave educators to rely on advice from public safety officials and their own discretion, he said. In this case, a school resource officer informed the school to be on the lookout for rosaries.

“We tell them to look at the whole package,” said Ken Fandrem, a police officer assigned to the school. "Not just one article of clothing.

But David Fidanque, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, said educators should proceed with caution. Their intentions may be valid, but they run the risk of violating students’ rights, he said.

“When it comes to restricting any form of expression, school officials have a pretty high bar to cross,” he said. “They better have very specific evidence that’s more than just a hunch.”

Victor Castro, the detective who tracks gang activity, takes a more subtle approach with rosaries, striving to be sensitive about cultural and religious traditions.

“I say, ‘Do me a favor. Wear it inside your shirt close to your heart. There’s a bad element out there that uses it in a different way.’”

I don’t recall kids getting suspended for wearing parachute pants, bandanas, baggy pants, baseball caps, or gold necklaces.

Why do people come on threads and kill them by saying “we have discussed this already”? Well guess what? i haven’t this is the first time i have heard anything about this. I found it because it was on the first page of this forum. As i as with probably most posters only go one or two pages back. So please stop doing this. as many have not “disscussed” this. It shows a high level of arrogance on their part to think just because they have had their say, nothing more need be said.

Well dang Liza, I did a SEARCH before posting, keywords Rosary and Gangs =no results, or none that were related. But guess what! The title of the linked thread is CRUCIFIX and GANGS. No wonder! How many searches are required before making a post?? LOL.

Now I didn’t see the thread of 3 WEEKS ago, out of the thousands and thousands of posts made here every week, I can’t keep up cause to be honest I have other stuff goin on, like ridin my motorcycles, watchin movies, running, on my bicycle, eatin out etc so this is only a small part of my day and now ya kill the thread I put up, cause I was sadden to hear this and wanted to see what y’all thought. 😦

This does not really surprise me. Gangs are actually religious in an unorthodox way. Where I am from, we have not had many encounters with crips or bloods, but the kings and MS13 have an intense fervor for the Virgin of Guadelupe that resembles a superstition more like santeria.

(My apologies if this offends any kings or muchachos but guys, she is called the Queen of Peace for a reason. When they took out her Son, she did not go after Romans or the Sanheidren with a machete. If you really wanted to honor the Holy Mother, start by forgiving and repecting life the way she did…)

Bloods and Crips tend to coalesce from smaller crews. Their relationship with our Lord is little more than superstition but they will kill for very little insult such as the time in DC the the P Crew (thats a Crip wanna be) tagged the National Cathedral. The tagger was shot in the back of his head infront of his crew, nobody talks…

(My apologies if this offends any crips or bloods but guys, He is called the King of Peace for a reason. Check out a Bible…)

These gangsters and hoodlums should all be incarcerated, with no chance of parole, and better yet lock them up in solitary, until they die of old age.

These gangsters and hoodlums are proliferating because educators parents and law enforcers have become too soft and permissive towards these immoral people.

Society should have a zero tolerace policy for gangsters and hoodlums.

Hollywood, the music industry and even the NBA are also to blame for the advance of the gangster and hoodlum subcultures.

These business groups and industries must be made to pay for their part in promoting these evil subcultures.

All Catholics should boycott hollywood, the music industry particularly the hip hop rap and other hoodlum related music style portions of the music industry and also the basketball industry.

When all obedient Catholics join together we can shut down hollywood, the immoral music industry and the basketball industry, which will help reduce the number and prestiege of these hoodlums and gangsters.

Its about time people stood up and cracked down on these thugs and the people who give promote them!!!

It’s sad when innocent religious symbols get hijacked by people who don’t even care about what they mean to others. I wish you guys all the best in this.

Sorry Guy - I was in a hurry when I posted that - not because I am some arrogant witch who thinks she has had the last say - - but rather that I hoped it would help further discussion.🙂

Man - folks are way crabby this week!! Must be all that Lenten sacrificing going on or something… Looking forward to everyone getting their coffee next week.

We tell our kids to treat the Rosary as a sacred object, not to dangle it from anything and not to wear it as jewelry. Keep it in a protector until you use it to pray. My personal opinion is that my faith should be “worn” by my actions, not my accessories.

As a sacramental through which indulgences may be gained when the conditions are met, a blessed Rosary should be treated with reverence.

People buy all kinds of fancy covers for their iPods. All the moreso should a sacramental be protected.

we had gang problems in city schools when I was a teen, and all baseball style jackets were banned, except those from a school, because it was a gang symbol. there were Hispanic gangs, Puerto Rican, Mexican and Cuban, who wore rosaries as gang attire, had OL Guadulupe on their jackets etc, so they were banned in the public schools for a while. this is the late 50s early 60s, so it is not new news. Our teachers were very adament about not wearing the rosary around the neck, in part because it was seen as a gang thing.

The problem is not so much what kids get suspended for, and in fact, many more schools are imposing dress codes these days. It’s the fact that the clueless gang members are using a rosary as something very much the opposite of what it stands for. If they don’t know, shame on them for not knowing. They could choose something else to use as a symbol. And if they do know, then shame on them for not caring. Yes, it’s awful that a lot of people live in poverty. We should try to help them. Still, Abraham Lincoln came from poverty too, and he didn’t let himself give up. If the young people in the gangs would use the rosaries to pray for love and help, which is what they’re made for, think how much better things could be… 😦

Very true. 👍

Can anyone speculate why they have attached themselves to our Rosary, and what is it suppose to proclaim in their line of thinking?

So this means you’ll buy pizza for everyone?

A lot of gangs have religious or quasi-religious roots. Some were actually religious self-help organizations that went sour. So there has ever been a patina of religiosity about many gangs.

Many of the gangs also happen to be Hispanic, and in Hispanic culture is was NOT disrespectful to wear Rosaries. (Just as it is not disrespectful to name a Hispanic person ‘Jesus’, though it is traditionally a name reserved for our Lord in English-speaking countries).

Lots of gangsters are very superstitious and wear ‘good luck charms’. Also, gangs are very conformist–once one or a few of the higher leaders start doing something, the rest of the gang usually follows suit.

And in any case, gangs have been latching onto innocuous-looking symbols for years, to keep the police off-balance.
