You should understand that the Rosary is basically a form of meditative prayer. The beads are used to keep the notes of the music counted so we don’t have to be distracted by every crochet or quaver. The repetition of some of the most beautiful prayers we can find from Jesus’ lips and scripture as well as adoration of our most Holy Trinity are used as a cloud of incense rising to our God whilst we use our intellect to meditate on the mysteries of the Faith.
The greatest value of the Rosary is that such a private act of meditation can be shared by great crowds joined together in the Faith of our Christ as a community prayer of great force and value.

Vain repetition? No prayer to our God is unheard or vain. I pray that your prayers are as equally efficacious.

Those should help you out with that.

BTW, if such prayers are wrong then why did Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ Himself repeat His prayer 3 times in the garden of Gethsemane? As with a lot of the stuff we were taught outside the church it just doesn’t make sense does it?

The Rosary is a type of ancient prayer that Calvinists probably are not aware of. Yet, Lutherans, Episcopalians and Anglicans also pray the Rosary. Did you know that?

The Rosary is contemplative prayer. The repetitions are not in vain, as they set a cadence for the contemplation of the mysteries of the life of Christ. In addition to being prayers in and of themselves, they also lend a structure to the act of prayerful contemplation. Yet, you cannot offer any prayer without it having some effect, and without being spiritually involved in it at some level of your being. The Rosary is intended to occupy our minds, our spirits and our bodies - our complete being is immersed in prayer and contemplation. It is spiritual multi-tasking, if you will.

As well, contemplating the life of Christ can never be in vain!

A previous poster mentioned this and I would like to comment on it too.

I am not wanting to be personal, but generally someone starting a thread (often with a contentious subject) and then not answering to any replies gives the impression that he/ she is a ‘troll’. Not saying that you are, but people can wonder about that.

There is also the fact that people can put in a lot of thought in writing a reply that they sincerely hope will help you understand the question you asked. By not responding to the posts, people don’t know if you have received their replies and sometimes a lot of time and effort writing a post feels wasted.

I find it odd that the context of the passage has not been addressed by either party.

It’s not about how serious one is about the prayer, or whether or not one is showing off (although Jesus does make that point as well in His sermon.) Jesus makes it clear what point He is trying to make, and we ought to take His words at face value:

Matt 6:7“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Jesus always gave context. He says do not heap up phrases or “repetitions” for those who do think that they will be heard for their many words. So one can ask themselves if they think heaping up their many repeated phrases is helpful or not; Jesus says it’s not.

pizza dude,

You should get a copy of Rome Sweet Home, by Scott Hahn. Explains a lot about misunderstandings of the Catholic Church. Well, also it is just a great book… I just read it this past month.
