I see many posts on CAF where people post that they say the Rosary while they drive to work. They seem proud of this.

I wonder if this is just as dangerous as texting while driving. After all, you are not supposed to “say” the Rosary - you are supposed to “pray” the Rosary. It is not a matter of reciting the Our Father and Hail Mary many times - the purpose is to meditate on the Mysteries of the Rosary.

How can you do this while traveling in traffic - possibly even on a highway? I don’t think that you can.

:blessyou:

I don’t think it’s really dangerous; you don’t nessisarily have to hold the beads. A very learned confessor once suggested to me to pray the Hail Mary often, even while driving.

I almost always pray the Rosary this way.

It is “anti-dangerous” as it makes me a calmer driver.😉

Praying the rosary while driving, especially on long trips, is traditional Catholicism 🙂

It is “traditional” for us to pray the rosary when we go on a long trip, usually a passenger leads. The driver is more focused on the driving. But we do not start our rosary until we are out of city traffic.

Some time ago I had a one hour commute and prayed the rosary every morning on the way to work.

No, it’s not as dangerous as texting while driving. It’s just like having a conversation.

I would rather pray the rosary than get bored while driving. I think that can be dangerous, too.

If one can listen or sing to the radio while driving, they can pray the Rosary.

I do it all the time. I think praying while driving in the city might be dangerous, but on country roads and the highway I’ve never even experienced a close call. I find it relaxing and I also find that my mind doesn’t wander from the mysteries the way it can when I pray at home or in church. :gopray:

I think it would also have to be on a daily or familiar route. I don’t see it working if you’re trying to read your GPS or a map.

You still think while you’re driving, yes? All kinds of thoughts come and go, and not solely about the road or traffic conditions. For me, the rosary sort of harnesses my thoughts, which would be coming and going anyway.

That said, L.A. is notorious for heavy traffic. My work used to have me driving in at 4:00 in the morning, when there was very little traffic. I prayed the rosary then, every day. But driving home in the very crowded afternoon, I felt I needed all my powers of concentration then, so no rosary.

By multitasking, I suppose. Keep one eye on the road and one the the Lord, eh?

You don’t hold the beads, I assume. But the rosary isn’t necessarily all-consuming mentally, unless you pray it that way. You can recite the prayers, think about the mystery, and work your car, just as long as you are quite good at all 3.

I do it a lot on the highway. I don’t do it in city driving because city driving demands too much attention itself.

Ever have the experience when you’re driving on an interstate that you suddenly realize you have driven a number of miles and don’t recall doing it at all? You don’t remember what you passed or saw? That’s really disconcerting. You wonder whether you were somehow hypnotized or whether your brain waves went flat or just what.

I never have that happen when I’m saying the rosary. I think it actually keeps a person more aware.

I do it all the time, I find it calming and soothing, keeps me cool with bad drivers doing weird things, I hold my Rosary Beads in my hand at the same time as I am holding the wheel so have the Rosary Beads dangling down and its so easy to move up and down and think of the mystery, my concentration while driving is better as it compacts my thinking, doing this for years never a problem and thank God up to now never had an accident while concentrating on the Lord.

If you can do it, do it, if you feel you cannot drive and concentrate , then don’t do it.

I do both the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet while driving. Since I live in a mountainous, curving road area, I don’t hold the beads at all. I got a CD of each, and play them as I drive. No more distracting while driving than listening to music would be. (My Divine Mercy Chaplet is the sung version, so I get to sing while driving too!) Just as anyone would sing along with the regular radio, and if I find a bad situation on the road, I stop the prayers, turn off the CD when I have a chance, and resume it later if I have time. Only time I don’t do this is when the roads are icy – I concentrate completely on the road and other cars then. Of course I live in a rural area. I also use it in driving to a nearby city when I need to go there. When I get to the edge of the city (with a lot of traffic, I’ve usually gone through one or both at least a couple of times, and then turn it off – otherwise I miss turns and get lost in town! LOL :D:

I can pray the rosary while driving on the interstate or back roads but if I’m in the city or in heavy traffic I wouldn’t want to try it. I find it relaxing and if I weren’t praying I would be listening to my cds or the radio anyway. I think it’s safer than texting or talking on the phone. I have a friend who says the “Hail Mary,” whenever she drives by an accident.

I drive a garbage truck, so I pray the rosary driving from our yard to my route (all rural driving). It starts my day off fantastically!
