RSV-SCE Bible???

Hello y’all,

I was wondering if y’all have any experience with the Revised Standard Version Second Catholic Edition Bible Do y’all have the hardcover, softcover, or leather? Is it good to carry around with you and for travel? Is it heavy? Is it good to take notes and use in apologetic conversations?

Or do y’all have a suggestion for another Bible that is fairly inexpensive that is around the same quality if not better?

It is my primary Bible and I recommend it. Mine is hardcover with the red cover. It is not a study Bible however, although there may be a study version available.

Unfortunately, it is not freely available online. For scripture quotes on my blog, I always link to the NAB on the USCCB site.
 
I have the paperback version and I have the Great Adventure Bible Indexing Tabs on it. There is not much room for notes but you can get the small post-its and make your marks on the pages and/or on the top/bottom borders.

Although, I am slowly moving into digital format. In a tablet, I can have all my books/bibles/commentaries and all my pdf’s (from creating my own documents or converting websites with apologetics/commentaries) in one single item. I also have Logos, which supports making notes on verses and creating clippings/notes with the verses that you want to include in your note taking. It does have a learning curve and high adaptation process but it is becoming my main source.

It’s a beautiful translation of the Scriptures, the prefered choice of many Catholics, and the 2nd edition is a fine updating of a scholarly standard.

I have the hardcover 2nd edition version (red with the beautiful “four-gospel” imprint that adorns all the RSV-CE: 2nd editions) as well as the New Testament RSV-CE, Navarre Bible (it’s a study edition with Vulgate include, extremely large, informative, but too bulky to carry around). The type could be larger and a little more attractive, but that’s the worst I can say about it.

The RSV-CE and 2nd editions from Ignatius Press come in a variety of easy-to-carry and accessible copies. These editions are hard to beat if you prefer the reading of the RSV.

Personally I use whatever Catholic translation is fitting for the matter at hand when it comes to apologetic discussions: the Douay–Rheims when speaking with the KJV-only crowd; the RSV-CE when dealing with some Southern and Independent Baptists; the RSV-CE 2nd Edition when a reading in the discussion needs to reflect the traditional Latin text; the NRSV-CE when speaking with the scholarly crowd; the NABRE as a common text or when dealing with Jehovah’s Witnesses and evangelical Fundamentalists who have a high demand for technical and critical proofs in their discussions (sometime the New Jerusalem Bible if the JW demands a text with the Divine Name).

But as when it comes to the Psalms I generally always use the new Revised Grail Psalter prepared by the Benedictine Monks of Conception Abbey. This new version of the Grail will be adopted by all English-speaking countries as the Psalter heard in Mass and used in the Liturgy of the Hours.
 
I have it, and greatly enjoy it! It is great for both devotion and study, though if you want the Bible used in the Liturgy, the New American Bible Revised Edition is closer (though not entirely the same).

I have the hardcover and it seems to be holding up well after about 6 months of continual use. I would say to go with the leather version, as I believe they now have sewn binding (as opposed to the glue used in the paperback and hardcover), and the flexibility of the leather will make reading the center-most words (the part that is closest to the binding doesn’t go flat on the hardcover, and so remains curved and a little bit difficult to read). Essentially you will have the flexibility of the softcover and the durability of the hardcover.

Really, any version you go with will be fine, whether soft, hard, or leather. It is a great Bible and I recommend it!

You can find it for relatively cheap on Amazon, and you can get the super saver free shipping if you go above $25 (so the leather ships free automatically)! If you get it locally, I might just go with the hardcover, as it retails at a reasonable 29.99.

I just bought the RSV-2CE in leather (with the read cover) on amazon.ca. The dimensions were a bit confusing, so I’m not sure how big it will be (I hope not too big). But I got it because of the good reviews it gets and many people of CAF love it as well.

PS: I bought Catholicism for Dummies on amazon as well. Maybe you should get that as well. 🙂

I would want to get this for apologetics and the New Testament Study Bible for more at home use since I have other Catholic Bibles at home.

I have that exact Bible at home. It is a wonderful compact Bible and feels AMAZING in the hands (it’s very soft), and easy to hold. You may need to wear glasses after awhile because the words are quite small. I’d recommend getting it though.

My friend has this. It is relatively compact for a full Bible, but be warned that the font is relatively small, as is the case with most compact complete editions.

Bear in mind that these are the RSV CE 1st edition, and so will still have ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ when people address God (but only when they God).

Do you think Bible tabs would stick too far out of it if they were just for apologetics and looking up a verse?

Would you recommend getting this compact Bible or one almost identical that is leather?

No, this Bible isn’t so small that you can’t put tabs in it. It also comes with a gold coloured ribbon, which is very nice and easy to place.

Depends on what you prefer. I personally like it, though I wish it was little big larger. Here’s the RSV-SCE that I ordered (it’s leather bound. Not sure if that means its all leather, or just the binding): amazon.ca/gp/product/0898709369/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I think the size is similar.

I have the leather version and I tabbed mine. I also put it in a soft leather Bible cover with zipper. 👍
