Rules regarding respect toward religious, clergy and church

Making any negative statements about our bishops, deacons, priests, sisters or religious brothers is not allowed. Speaking to anyone of them in an inappropriate tone while on the forum is not allowed.

Targeting Vatican II and attacking or blaming Vatican II is not allowed.

Everyone is free to state their opinion on a specific point. Everyone is allowed to disagree and limit their presentation of their disagreement to their reasons, not point fingers at the clergy, religious or the Church. State what you disagree with and offer an alternative that is respectful of Church law and clergy and religious. That can lead to some interesting discussions.

If attacks and disrespect happen on this forum you may be suspended or banned. I’m going to leave this open for a day or two in case you have questions about what may be construed as an attack or disrespectful.

I’m not leaving this open for questions about this policy. **The policy is not up for debate. ** I want to eliminate trolls and those whose only point for coming on to the forums is to vent their hostility rather than share with others, learn from each other, and have fun together.

Good thing the Pope isn’t a member here or else he would be kicked out for things he has said about some priests. I think I’ll join him on the outside where the air is fresh and clean.

With all respect, I think you have completely misunderstood not only the moderators and posters here who applaud this very CHRISTIAN post by the OP, but you have misunderstood the Holy Father as well.

Eliminating negative and disrespectful, name-calling and derogatory posts does not mean that we are putting the clergy on a pedestal.

It means that we use CHRISTIAN CHARITY.

I for one am sick of posts that denigrate the clergy. Aren’t you? Do you really think that it is Christian to name-call based on ‘politics’ or to tar ‘all religious’ because of the improper actions of a few?

When Pope Benedict speaks out he addresses the evils, not the ‘person’. When Pope Benedict speaks, even when he has to ‘chastize’ he does so with love, compassion and above all with respect. Furthermore, as Pope he has the RIGHT to discipline and to address those ‘under’ him.

Few if any of us can ‘chastize’ in such a proper way as he does. . .and THAT is why we are being reminded by the moderators to ‘moderate’ our vitriol and to remember to respect the person.

You may have posted this in response to one of my posts which was deleted for being disrespectful of a particular clergyman, who was off the charts disrespectful of me and my state (AZ). I’ll bet you never expected that kind of language to come from a clergyman.

My question is, could I post a link to the news story about this without making any editorial comment?

That is my question as well-if a member of the clergy or religious has committed a “negative” act, and the media have reported on it, can that be posted? or is that making a negative statement?
 
Tom’s post is pretty self-explainatory. No need to dissect it.
On this forum a news story involving clergy, is just that, a news story or opinion column. We can’t control that.
However, unlike journalists, we have rules to follow.
Disagreement with a religious is fine, as long as you discuss the issue like charitible adults. I know that runs counter to current societal norms, which insists on being vulgar or insulting, but Catholics are to be different. Even if you are not a Catholic you are expected to follow the rules of the forum, charitably, and in an adult fashion.
And don’t be paranoid. this is forum-wide problem.😉
 
I always do my best to avoid ad hominem attacks, but this mandate seems to rule out criticism of all things touching and concerning Vatican II and the clergy. Barring speech on certain subjects is a slippery slope indeed. However, the moderators make the rules and if they want to shut down certain commentary, they have the authority to do so.
 
**Please observe the rules of the OP. Disrespect for clergy will result in a ‘contempt for Catholicism’ warning and eventual banning. **

I didn’t read it in the same sweeping way you did - in fact, I didn’t see it as a change in policy at all - but since the moderators haven’t corrected your interpretation, perhaps you’re right.🤷
