Rumors of Vatican power struggle?

CNN is reporting there may be possible corruption or power struggles going on in the Vatican. They even hint that there are possible assassination attempts on Pope Benedict XVI…

Any merit to this story or is it a bunch of over exaggeration?

This stuff is fascinating to read, of course, but it seems that whenever I read the story behind the story it’s usually some mountain from a molehill. Imagine what the news would make of your own family interactions if every change of favor were treated as a plot in a power struggle.

That said, I’m sure there is a kernel of truth in there somewhere. Lord knows, even the clergy is not immune to corruption. And it’s certainly not beyond the pale that, for example, China might want to assassinate the pope; there is a power struggle between the “patriotic” and the apostolic Church in China.
