WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2006 – Some Beltway pundits have opined that U.S. force levels in Iraq could fall to 100,000 by the end of this year, but the Defense Department’s top official said he won’t play the speculation game. Story

Too late. He already lied to us when he “speculated” a few YEARS ago that this thing would could last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Really…where do ya from there?

“Lied” is it? That is an extremely serious allegation to be lodging in the absence of any support.

Please be more specific. Exactly when and where did he make a statement that he “speculated” that the war would last only a few weeks to a few months?

Feb. 7 [2003], Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, to U.S. troops in Aviano, Italy: “It is unknowable how long that conflict will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.”

It is pretty obvious that he was talking about the Liberation of Iraq, not the peace keeping/nation building afterwards.

Possibly that is what he meant, but saying ‘the conflict’ makes it appear he means the whole time of combat operations.

The reason I didnt respond is because I believe many of you know exactly as to what I was reffering to. I just choose not to engage in the games of “Link please”? “Any evidence”? To something that isnt obscure.

But thanks Mike. Like I said, where else can one go?

Sgsin, you know anything about German history and how long it took to settle things down there where Allied forces were not the major police force in the country?

It was around 7 years.

Found a date:

May 5, 1955

Germany (west) became it’s own country again, more than 7 years after the end of WW2.

That would make us mindreaders and mindreading is against the forum guidelines. I haven’t a clue to what you were referring.

So you think responding in a courteous and responsible way is a “game”? How far do you think that will fly?

A big problem is when people hear what they want, not paying to what was exactly said, including the words that were used in statements. Politicians are great at making you think you heard what you wanted while saying something entirely different of just skirting the question all together.

That is why we deserve links, and why we should be going back to credible sources to check on what someone has said or done. Including all those little catch words that could change the meaning.
