rfulks in the 29 posts you have made i have yet to see 1 pro catholic comment you have made. you claim to be a catholic but your comments dictate ortherwise.
By the way what does r stand for in rfulks religious?

The one question that is important is this: Did priests and bishops in the Church rape and molest children or not? Did they then compound their sin by hiding it and allowing the criminals to continue in the priesthood or did they not?

There is a devil within the Church and it is closing the eyes and ears of many Catholics to the rape and molestation committed in their name. Pride and hatred have taken hold among many when they should address their sins and turn to God.
I’m right there with you on this matter. It’s not about what anyone else says about the Church but about what still remains to be resolved regarding this matter of abuse.

Just read this today.

How can we simply sit back and blame enemies of the Church without looking inward? How can we say the scandal has been addressed when there are still ‘secrets’ coming out everyday? How is it that this bishop does not seem to have had any disciplinary action other than perhaps being made to step down as bishop last year? This is not a matter of dispute - he admits it!

And somehow this becomes about ideology? Is ideology now the new religion? What is our religion that very little empathy/concern is expressed for the victims who are being revealed with alarming regularity? Are they not also the “least of our brothers” that we should be more indignant over their having been violated than over some journalist who dares to write about it?

We, with all our traditions and teachings and biblical standards, would dare compare these vile criminal acts - in betrayal of trust & vows to those committed by the deviants of society?

Simply unbelievable!

Wow, I’m shocked. The liberals on CAF disagree with Rush on this and don’t agree that liberals are targeting the Catholic Church.

The “THIS” he referred to was over twenty years old news…and hot off the press! I liked that they used a photo that shows the bishop beaming from ear to ear, also!! Nice touch!

Liberals will continue to believe the worst, apparently about our beloved Catholic faith regardless of how many apologies, reparations, corrections, reforms and improvements are made. Evil people will do evil things and some have infiltrated our ranks. It is the nature of Satan to fan any flame that will create havoc among those weak in the least way in their faith. Divide and conquer.

Lets all continue to pray for all those who are being deceived by the liberal ideology and tactics. Jesus promised us that the gates of hell will not prevail against holy Mother Church and I will always believe Him.

Don’t cry, seekerz. I wasn’t attacking; just making an observation. There was no “tactic” involved. You may want to get counseling to overcome your hyper-sensitivity.

Isn’t it ironic that after the 20+years, they found this news just before Holy Week? I
heard the priest who was “in charge” of the Minnesota priest’s trial and he was not
even contacted. And, yes, he was available and easily reached.

I believe the liberals on the extreme left hate Rush almost as much as they hate the Catholic Church. I say he has a point about this recent barrage of attacks but there really is nothing new here in all the latest media hype.

Discerning people of any faith at all have to wonder why all this hatred and venom is directed at the 2000 year old church, time and again. This drives many faithful to investigate our faith and come home at last to the Catholic Church. If satan hates it so much, it must the one true Church of Jesus Christ.:amen:
I hate Rush and I am a Conservative. He is an entertainer, a purveyor of prejudice that his listeners can buy into. How many times has this drug addict been married? Do you know how old his current girl friend is? I can’t stand him.

`Please show me where anyone in any blog agrees with what happened to those kids or the cover up. it IS SICKENING what happened sickening the way it was covered up. here in ireland it is nothing less than shocking what went on. yet here the same crimes were covered up where teachers did the same yet nobody is blaming their co-workers, judges, police, parents, who turned a blind eye. i recently read a reporter who said he was a homesexual man in a loving realtionship and a practising catholic condeming the church. one pretty confused being. this is where we are as a church now. feminists who don’t want to be catholics but annoyed women can’t be priests. homesexuals annoyed that its considered a sin by the church. pro abortion groups, atheists who hate religion, but maybe your right there is no agenda out there but reporting the news.

To blame the abuse scandal on the leftist American media is so wrong, I don’t even know where to begin.

First, that sort of attitude minimizes what we HAVE to recognize is a very grave and horrific aspect of our Church’s recent history. The response of the Church should be to simply acknowledge the wrongs that were committed, apologize, and develop a plan to prevent such horrors from happening again, as best as is possible. The response of the Church should NOT be to hide behind a wall of excuses, blaming liberals, blaming the media, blaming everyone but those truly responsible for the abuse and its coverup.
The part you, and the biased media, seem so eager to ignore is that this was not an aspect of our Church’s recent history, but an aspect of our SOCIETY’s recent history - of which the Church happens to be a part. The stubborn insistence upon ignoring the abuse conducted in non-Catholic and secular institutions and the failure of civil authorities to investigate and prosecute these vile forms of abuse robs the biased media and its defenders of all credibility in rational debate and examination. It betrays them for what they are: the ignorant, the opportunists, and the bigots.
Second, we have to thank investigative journalism for what it has found. It was the aggressive investigation by the Boston Globe a decade ago that brought to light the scandal of the Boston diocese, which forced the rest of the American Church to adopt policies to deal with and prevent child abuse across the country. I recall that the Globe was loudly decried by Cardinal Law, et al, at the time, but without its work no attention would have been paid to the crimes ongoing, no changes would have been made, and abuse would have continued.
You’re wrong here on so many levels. I grew up in Boston. I read the papers during the scandals.

The fact is that the Boston Globe (and its parent, the New York Times) buried the scandals for decades. People went to the papers with abuse reports. The papers didn’t want anything to do with it. There was no profit to be had, politically or financially in reporting the abuses with integrity. Only in those late years, when most of the accused were dead and buried and the political landscape changed, did the Globe decide to start reporting on the abuse. It reported with a very specific agenda as well: to drive out Cardinal Law, to chase Catholics out of churches, and to force the Archdiocese to sell many valuable pieces of city property to well-connected city moguls and politicians to pay for settlements with powerful lawyers.

The Globe remains silent on the rampant sexual abuse that took place in Boston public schools, social works offices, and non-Catholic religious institutions.

Dear,

We are all sickened: you and I perhaps no less than the next person in the pew. Where we do ourselves a great disservice is in showing more indignation over our Church being dragged through the mud than in the reason having been given for such dragging.

None is without sin: not our critics, not us but humility is sometimes the best defense. I suppose being our first Pope, St Peter had the power to “influence away” the accounts of his denial of Christ, but by it being handed on, his story has helped give us all reason to hope and rise again when we fall.

There is not one problem facing our Church for which the solution has not already been provided within it.

Sure, “biased media, biased media” - it’s all THEIR fault, no one else’s. That is a weak excuse, and making excuses rather than addressing the problem is rather pitiful in my mind, when our innocent youth have been victimized, and when the faith of many is only made more tenuous by the actions of our Church hierarchy and the words of its see-no-evil apologists.

And to say that abuse happens in the rest of society, so what is the big deal about it happening in the Church, is very wrong. It is acceptable nowhere. The big difference between the abuse perpetrated by our priests and that which happens everywhere else in society, though, is that our Church leaders actively tried to suppress and coverup the abuse, transfering the abusers to other parishes, turning a blind eye to horrors ongoing in the interest of protecting the reputation of the Church as an organization but with little apparent regard to the innocent who were abused. When abuse happens at a school or in someone’s home, there is no trans-national, extra-governmental organization like we have in the Church seeking ways to suppress the evidence in the interest of saving its own skin. It is the suppression and coverup that is as much the scandal as is the abuse that occurred, understand.

I don’t live in Boston, so I don’t know the details of the history of the situation. I do know, though, that what came to light there 10 years ago - came to light because of the reporting of the Globe and the rest of the national media - brought pretty big changes to our Catholic church in America, changes for the better. The Church is much more cognizant of the issue, much more proactive in minimizing the risk of abuse. In my own parish, and I believe this is the case everywhere, even laity have to take specific training before they are allowed to supervise or interact with children at any kind of church or school-related function. These are good changes, which would not have happened without the reporting done 10 years ago. Thank you, Boston Globe.

Yes, continue to focus only on maligning the Catholic Church. Let the more widespread abuse of children at the hands of other institutions continue thanks to the cover provided by relentlessly attacking the Church over misdeeds done by a small minority of men decades upon decades ago.

That’s surely a moral, caring, and responsible way to act.

See, this is where the conspiracy theories and hateful rhetoric part way with what the facts will support. The facts show failures by Bishops and Dioceses (often times by bureaucrats) - as well as state, local, and national governmental authorities and media institutions. The fictional narrative of the media and the bigots, on the other hand, insists that there was a conspiracy to enable pederasts and hide evidence from dedicated police and judges running up the chair of St. Peter …

They are always ever-so-careful never to implicate failings on the late Pope John Paul II, because that could provoke cognitive dissonance against their precious narrative. Pope John Paul II, seated those many years during which this “conspiracy” occurred is off-limits to their narrative, but the man they tried to smear as a “Nazi Pope” is fair game.

These folks are disingenuous hypocrites and cowards, not journalists.

City boards of public education hushing up molestations by teachers - transferring them, moving them to administrative duties - that’s all well and good? The newspapers (many internationally owned public companies) burying abuse reports because they couldn’t profit from them - that’s fine to brush under the rug? The fact that Protestants and Jews and non-religious groups of all stripes have the same or higher rates of abuse from those times and their cases weren’t widely publicized and scandalized - that’s just peachy?

But the Catholic Church … it has a central authority figure so that changes everything!

Yes, you didn’t live there, and you don’t know the details.

The fact is that what come to light there was kept in the dark by the very same Boston Globe you try to praise when it was convenient for the Globe and their parent company, the New York Times.

You also mistakenly attribute the changes in the Church to the Globe’s reporting. The reforms that curbed sexual abuse in the Catholic Church went into place well before the 2000s. The changes in policy took place in the 1980s and 1990s - well before the Globe decided to cash in on the story they’d been sitting on for years. That’s why when you actually observe the rates of abuse and the times the abuse occurred you see a massive drop-off in the 80s and 90s to near nil by the time the Boston Globe decided to break their story. The changes that took place after the Boston Scandal were mostly for the sake of having clear, lawyer-proof evidence of posted policies to minimize further legal exposure by parishes, making public contrition, and trying to reassure victims of sexual abuse.

Of course, one of the leading figures in the Church who finally pieced the puzzle to see how widespread the abuse among the various dioceses was and implemented the changes that brought clergy sexual abuse to such a marked decline was none other than then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger - they very man that the New York Times, its vassal newspapers, and the AP want to string up.

This is another example of how closed many people’ mind has become: “we are being accused by liberals and thus automatically the substance of their criticism has to be rejected”. This mindset has replaced God with the pride of men. Instead of humility in the face of evidence of wrongdoing, it sees itself as Just and a victim of a conspiracy.

Matt 15:14 “They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

I was listening to Rush yesterday and he had an interesting call late in his show about the reporting on the scandal. Rush I think was dead on in his opinion on this.

The political climate is right for any and all attacks on the Catholic Church. Just like the lawsuit against Belmont Abby College for not providing for abortion and contraception within their health insurance plan.

I am amazed how folks who will accept almost nothing from the mainstream media will accept everything the mainstream media has to say about the Catholic Church.

Again, I was only making an observation. I didn’t even say that either of your points were invalid…just that it wasn’t a shock that you are disagreeing with Rush.

I’ll send you to the same therapist, once I find one to recommend to seekerz. 😃

It is funny that you mention conspiracy theories here, because this whole quote seems to be a conspiracy theory.

Yes, that is right, it is the central authority of the Church and its hierarchy which was responsible for the coverup of the abuse scandal around the world which makes this an especially bad thing, compounding the evil and sin done by the responsible priests.

There you go again, seeking to minimize what has happened in our Church by using the weak excuse that since it happens elsewhere, we shouldn’t be overly concerned about the abuse that has happened in our Catholic church.
No. It happened in our Catholic Church, and reforms were enacted and have been successful.

So to belabor the point for political and commercial gain instead of addressing the institutions that have not endured such scrutiny and enacted such reforms is irresponsible.

Further portraying a false narrative that priests molest children in disproportionate numbers misleads the public - both parents and children - distracting them from seriously dangers by advertising that child molestation is “a priest thing,” when the facts are quite to the contrary.
It is funny that you mention conspiracy theories here, because this whole quote seems to be a conspiracy theory.
That’s a poor attempt at deflection seeing as you haven’t provided a scrap of evidence that supports your assertion. The “Nazi Pope” narrative, however, is a matter of public record in publication. The complete refusal to so much as mention in passing the late Pope John Paul II in any article about molestation scandals that occurred while he was Pope is telling, and again a matter of examining articles that are quite public. Finally, the unsupported “pederasty conspiracy” narrative is plain to see. You’ve brought it into this very thread yourself.

So where, exactly, am I asking anybody to make a conspiratorial leap to a conclusion beyond what the facts have brought before us?
Yes, that is right, it is the central authority of the Church and its hierarchy which was responsible for the coverup of the abuse scandal around the world which makes this an especially bad thing, compounding the evil and sin done by the responsible priests.
Please do come back with some evidence to substantiate this serious allegation. Since the Central Authority you so decry was Pope John Paul II, please provide some factual evidence that the late Holy Father engaged in a conspiratorial cover-up of clergy sexual abuse.

And no, before you try any of these red herrings: the Seal of the Confessional, bureaucratic incompetence, doctor-patient privilege, refusing to out victims of abuse, and accepting the popular medical treatment recommendations of the time do not count as “cover-ups.”

Show me some evidence that Pope John Paul II did something extraordinary that served the ends of covering up the sexual abuse by priests that occurred in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I agree with you 100%, but why pick only on the Catholic Church? You don’t hear of any pedophilia, child molestation, etc. that occurs in other institutions. I’m not trying to white wash the Church, God knows it needs a good cleaning, but fair is fair.
