Calls Christianity “a powerful source of support for European civilization”

By Meg Jalsevac

ROMANIA, September 7, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an address to the Third European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu this week, outspoken Russian Orthodox Bishop Kirill said that in order for Europe to survive the tribulations that have befallen previous civilizations, it must retain its Christian identity.

According to a report on interfax.com, Kirill explained that an increasing amount of Europeans Christians and non-Christians alike have come to recognize “Christianity [as] a powerful source of support for European civilization.”

The recent Popes have said the same thing, and in fact there was a battle to acknowledge the Christian foundation of Europe in the European Union constitution, which, unfortunately, believers lost.
The Pope too for this reason had spoken against having Turkey admitted to the EU, since it is a Moslem couintry (though Pope Benedict now doesn’t stand against this)–but this too was a round in the effort to save Europe’s Christian identity from total loss.
I think that this is a matter when the Orthodox and the Catholics can be good allies for defending the presence of God in the world.

Can’t see why the Turks (who have a fertility rate below replacement and a population similar to that of the UK, Italy and France) are seen as such a serious threat.

Hey but I’m a European, what would I know?

I think religious freedom is an issue. If a european nation persecuted any religious figure to the extent that Turkey persecutes the Patriarch of Constantinople, it just wouldn’t be tolerated.

Should be in favor of Turkey joining then - joining the EU means bringing things like that into line.

Europe is finished, it was a great run but all things must come to an end, I give them 50 years before it is almost completely Muslim. Europe has nearly turned its collective back on Christianity, when that happens Islam, the scurge of God comes in to fill the void.

We pray it does not happen. With God’s grace, we shall triumph.

Has any culture ever been brought from the brink of oblivion back to Christianity?

There SEEM to be signs of this happening in Europe already.

Stories of Muslims converting to the Catholic church faster than Islam is growing.

But statistics are easy to make up ya know?
