Russian troops land in Venezuela

I don’t think the US will allow much more of this. The Monroe Doctrine has been standard procedure since the War of 1812, whether we still call it that or not.
I don’t know about this. Cuba was a de facto Soviet colony for decades. I could be wrong, but I strongly doubt Trump has any desire to commit forces of any kind to Venezuela. Imaginably if Brazil sent major forces into Venezuela, maybe then. But otherwise, I don’t think so.

Economic trade is a bit different than directly intervening in and setting up Russian friendly dictatorships though.

I imagine Putin is trying the ole Cuban Missile doctrine- we will leave Venezuela alone if you let us have our way with all our former Soviet satellites wink wink.

Certainly, you could be right, but my guess this move on Venezuela is part of an already-established Putin trick; corner the oil resource market to the extent one can, or at least be able to deny it to the western allies. He’s doing the same with uranium.

Also true
It will be interesting to see if Putin starts buying up coal reserves. If the Dems take over the white house he’ll be able to buy American coal stocks for a song. They’re already incredibly cheap because the threat of total destruction has not gone away.

They don’t. Not directly. They’re Maduro’s “praetorian guard”, a role the Soviets (largely through their satellites) performed for Marxist dictators for decades. They’ll also keep the Venezuelan army officers in line. As a former KGB colonel, I’m sure Putin knows how to do it.

But because the neighboring nations are weak, the Russian presence (and the Cuban and Iranian presence) is definitely a threat to them.

How on Earth does a small number of Russian soldiers on a different continent threaten the nation?
If we accept this deployment, why do we think the number and types of deployments will be small and limited to soldiers?

Firstly who cares, and secondly if Americans don’t want Russian soldiers in a South American country they probably shouldn’t spend decades trying to topple the democratically-elected leadership of that country.

They don’t need any help with that. Guaido convinced Pence that half the army would defect and they got a couple hundred lol
The army officers, many of whom were replaced by Maduro operatives, know what will happen to them if they defect. Probably it’s too late for Venezuela. After all, the Soviet Union lasted for 70+ years and Marxists have ruled Cuba for nearly 60 years.

Sometimes I wonder if you even believe your own sentences.

Until now?
Time will tell. I truly don’t expect the State Department to roll over on this but they only landed Saturday. The Cubans and to a smaller extent the Russians have been helping out Maduro since the Obama administration and all the way back to Bush 43 as well, although I think that might have been Chavez? Actual troops however certainly escalates the matter.

I didn’t know that conservatives wail against low taxes and traditional man-woman marriage.
You forgot to include the way they love how elections are handled too.

edited for: Putins biggest opponent wasn’t on the ballot and the AP reported election irregularities, no big surprise. Please don’t remind us that Obama called him as well, because then we’d get into the hypocrisy of defending it because Republican heads exploded when he did!~

Interesting side step. Are you also under the impression that Kim Jong Un is the freely, democratically elected leader of North Korea? Does “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” throw you for a loop? Are you a big fan of banning opposition parties from participating in elections? Maybe you are a big believer in the president having the power to write the National Assembly out of the Constitution without their consent and declaring them outlawed? Maybe you think Maduro is shooting his own citizens and throwing them in prison because the majority if the population suddenly became Anarchists? Inquiring minds want to know.

I am starting to think we need to have you investigated for colluding with the Russians, mon frere.
