The Barack Obama administration and the U.S. intelligence community have concluded that Russia is set to start flying combat missions from a new air base inside Syria, but there’s disagreement inside the U.S. government on what to do about it.

Thursday at the White House, top officials were scheduled meet at the National Security Council Deputies Committee level to discuss how to respond to the growing buildup of Russian military equipment and personnel in Latakia, a city on the Syrian coast controlled by the Bashar al-Assad regime. Obama has called on his national security officials to come up with a plan as soon as possible, as intelligence reports pour in about the Russian plans to set up an air base there. The options are to try to confront Russia inside Syria or, as some in the White House are advocating, cooperate with Russia there on the fight against the Islamic State.

The State Department had already begun pushing back against the Russian moves, for example by asking Bulgaria and Greece to deny overflight permissions to Syria-bound Russian transport planes. But state made those moves on its own, and when the president found out, he was upset with the department for failing to go through the inter-agency process, two officials said. The president wants his national security team to come up with a consensus on the way forward as early as next week.

For some in the White House, the priority is to enlist more countries to fight against the Islamic State, and they fear making the relationship with Russia any more heated. They are seriously considering accepting the Russian buildup as a fait accompli, and then working with Moscow to coordinate U.S. and Russian strikes in Northern Syria, where the U.S.-led coalition operates every day.

For many in the Obama administration, especially those who work on Syria, the idea of acquiescing to Russian participation in the fighting is akin to admitting that the drive to oust Assad has failed. Plus, they fear Russia will attack Syrian opposition groups that are fighting against Assad, using the war against the Islamic State as a cover.

Let’s see Obama and Kerry fix this. Putin has made a fool of both of them. I am sure they are laughing in Iran too.

How about this for a comparison. First, Syria is supposedly a Russian backed minority dictatorship. The US and it’s allies are offering support to some of the Rebels. The objective is to eventually force out Assad, which will surely mean the Russian naval base at Tartus will have to be closed because the Russians backed the bad guys. Now let’s compare that to a similar situation. Bahrain is a US backed minority dictatorship. Now what if Russia were to begin supplying military aid to the Shia majority, who so far just tend to have the occasional street clash. The objective obviously would be to topple the Sunni minority government, which would surely mean that the US naval base would have to be closed because the US backed the bad guys.
Probably a bad example since most Americans would reject the whole premise on the basis of it being a case of the shoe being on the other foot.

US is getting played by both Russia and Iran. Obama administration is taking the bait. Meanwhile our economy is under attack as well due to our dollar being manipulated by a global marketplace

What I fear is that the next U S. Government will send in ground forces ,
It will become a bigger broader mess,

It will be another disaster, but Americans seem to like to intervene in other countries, especially those with a lot of oil.

We sure do like our over-consumption of oil. It drives our economy of waste and indulgence.

Putin’s plan in Syria is clear. By deploying Russian assets to Syria, the Kremlin plans to be the force behind upcoming events in Damascus. A few days ago in Vladivostok, Putin said Russia was looking at various options for Syria. He said Damascus should be part of a new international coalition to fight terrorism and extremism, which should take place in tandem with a political process in which Assad should play a role.
“The Syrian president… agrees with that, including holding early elections, parliamentary elections, and establishing contact with the so-called healthy opposition, bringing them into governing,” said Putin. That is a pretty strong statement of events that are about to occur in Syria where the Kremlin is dictating to Assad.
Russia is preparing for a transition in Syria. The equipment and personnel being deployed are not only to protect Alawites, but also to develop a humanitarian aid campaign. That Russian assets are setting up in Assad’s heartland in Latakia is part of Moscow guaranteeing the president and his family’s security.

I think they are there to stabilize the situation when there is a change to a sharing of power.

Putin has also met with “healthy” opposition in Syria in Moscow.

This does not look ominous to the writer of this article.

Russia has been supporting the biggest tyrant in that Civil War and now, see that if he is to hang on to power, they must aid in the compromise.
**Al Assad still more ruthless than Daesh
Between January and July, Syrian regime killed 7,894 people while Daesh killed 1,131**

They sure have made a big mess over there!
We didn’t fight a war in Syria. Syria and Iran helped fight Americans in Iraq, and if one follows the news, Iran is responsible for the deaths of American soldiers.
Twice designated a terrorist by the United States government, considered responsible for up to 20 percent of American casualties in the Iraq war, Major General Qasem Suleimani, the legendary Iranian spymaster and leader of the Quds Force – the elite special operations wing of the hardline Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – is now stirring alarm in Washington for doing something the Obama administration would ordinarily cheer: taking the fight to ISIS in Iraq.

Never fear. Obama is no more serious about opposing Russia in Syria than he is in opposing it in Ukraine, or than he was in opposing Al Quaeda and ISIS in Iraq and Syria. I’m sure Putin and Khameni know it.

This administration and its supporters abandoned the Middle East to ISIS, Iran and Russia a long time ago.

A very outdated Democrat talking point. The U.S. gets nearly all its oil from North America, and has for decades, increasingly from the U.S. itself.

I agree. 😦
