KIGALI (Reuters) - Tech-savvy Rwanda is using drones to keep residents of the capital Kigali informed of coronavirus lockdown measures - and help catch those who abuse them.

While police stop cars and pedestrians on streets to ask why they are out, two drones buzz above them, one loudly broadcasting instructions and the other monitoring movements.

“Drones are flying in areas where checkpoints are not mounted and where patrols could not be there,” said police spokesman John Bosco Kabera.
Something like this in the UAE too, cameras are on some of these drones. Imagine if we had this here? Are these people totally blocked from going anywhere? Even to the store? Imagine if it came down to this in the USA or any other country really, for that matter.

Going too far?

Waaay too far.
The virus though, maybe it could really devastate Africa or parts of it. I do believe the virus needs to be aggressively contained.

There might be tradeoffs, I have been in some very poor areas in 3rd world nations. What if a source of water was contanimated?

I think I even heard here in the USA, they might have wrapped up a body to keep the contagion contained when they buried the person.

What is really creepy and this isn’t about corona but per Peru; a few years ago, people were suffering from Zika, I saw a picture of an old cemetery down there being sprayed down to contain the Zika (virus?). These are different times.

I’m not really sure if this is going too far or not. I mean, perhaps strict measures are needed to keep this virus from spreading too much. After all, here in Indiana there are still some people who try to go out and do things like shopping simply out of boredom and not necessity. By doing this, they could potentially be spreading the virus further.

You could ask the same questions about the flu.

Government proverbially beating people off the streets with drones is too much Government.

There are some things Government just can’t do.

They cannot prevent every infection.

I get that people are freightened.
Now is not the time to put such trust in Government. (It never is.)

Well, there are some situations where indeed, we are on a war footing. The president has said so.

I think most municipalities do have drones in the Sheriffs and Police

China has been doing a similar thing for a while in infected areas. There was footage from the drones going around online, and they spoke to people from a microphone. Essentially if the operator saw someone out and about they would harass them with the drone and tell them to go home.

So they’re harrassing doctors and nurses on their way to the hospital.
Grocery store and phamacy workers on the way to their essential jobs.
Citizens out buying food and medicine.

Are non-essential stores still open? I can’t imagine someone going to the grocery store or pharmacy “out of boredom.” The grocery stores are a nightmare to shop in and the pharmacies only let one person in at a time.

It was brought up in the other thread and to make it clear, they have even fired rubber bullets in Africa (South Africa) over this pandemic and over social distancing:

The experts would know which I’m not but perhaps there is a real fright at what this could do to Africa. It might really tear through some countries…

We have a South Sudan family in the neighborhood, in fact, they go to our church and he does usher there.

And besides that, I have seen pictures of how they have treated Ebola in the Congo… those protective suits, I never imagined we would see those here in 2020. I’m sure Ebola is more deadly but COVID is more contagious (? My laypersons guess).

Africa is doing great (knock on wood), the whole continent has 1k deaths, I don’t trust their 22k total cases figure due to lower testing. Higher temperatures and humidity do correlate with lower COVID infections.
