We’re talking about a human LIFE here. There shouldn’t be any discussion on that… its wrong and inherently evil to MURDER!

No, anyone who doesn’t think it is a good idea to force a religious moral on people who don’t want it forced on them.

Maybe South Dakota doesn’t believe abortion is murder. 5 years a a little fine is hardly a sentence for murder. South Dakota probably thinks abortion is just a little annoying and they want to get tourist money for being the only state that went from 800 abortions a year to 0.
As a South Dakotan, I’m offended that people who have never read the bill, didn’t listen to the debate, and have never talked to anyone who promoted the legislation would pass make a reckless charge against the people of this state.

We have the pro-aborts calling us hicks, cult polygamists, and worse and now we have to put up with this ignorant charge by Zoo and Mike in SD (note the SD is for San Diego).

Against alot of advice from pro-life legal experts, we were advised to have a rape/incest exception as it would significantly increase the chance of getting upheld by the Supreme Court. Their pragmatism (let’s just stop 98% of the abortions today and fight the other fight another day or deal with it in other ways) was rejected out of principle. I had lunch w/ a lawyer friend of mine who is an extremely devout Catholic man. He is nearly a daily communicant and as pro-life as the Pope. While praising the resolve of the legislature, he fears that not having the rape/incest exception in the bill will make it harder for the S.C. to overturn Roe v. Wade (which he characterizes as bad legal thinking regardless of how you think about abortion). And with each time Roe is affirmed, its being over-ruled is more difficult.

Regarding the economics, we are estimated to spend in excess of 30% of the AG’s normal budget to defend this law all the way to the Supreme Court and we have had many conventions and seminars canceled becuase of this law. We were well aware of the economic consequences were going to be negative.

As far as I’m concerned, when one makes baseless, reckless charges they are potentially “bearing false witness”, a grave matter. I’d expect better from people who should be prayerfully supporting the efforts going on in this state. We’ve been fighting for years such that we not only have the highest percentage of pro-life legislators (such that we lost over 10 on this bill because of the rape/incest issue and it still passed over-whelmingly in both houses (nearly veto proof)). Every poll shows that the SD populace is the strongest in support of our abortion efforts of any state in the nation.

We’ve done this because for years we didn’t just extol shrill rhetoric about abortion but we also did the following:
  1. Formed inter-religious across denomination lines to organize DAILY prayer vigils near the abortion clinic.
  2. Expanded our social service efforts (esp. the Catholics, Baptists and Lutherans) to aggressively make aware to the “target market” (young single women) of all the assistance we had both during the pregnancy and after the pregnancy and for facilitating either open or closed adoptions.
  3. We wanted to take away one of the major arguments the pro-aborts have (who is going to take care of all these unwanted babies). Our previous Bishop created a Fund that guarantees that we will bear all the costs of pre-natal care and adoption expenses and post-pregnancy counceling if they’ll just forgo an abortion.
My friends, it is no accident that the state that has the lowest incidence of abortions per capita is that state that passed the toughest anti-abortion bill in the country. We have worked hard to lessen the “necessity” these tormented women feel to resort to an abortion. By doing this, we have the deepest and most resolute population understanding that abortion should not be legal in this country.
