< Eighty percent of faculty and staff at the four San Francisco archdiocese high schools subject to the archbishop’s new moral strictures have signed a petition rejecting his additions to the handbook for the next school year.

The petition, expected to be delivered to Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone Wednesday, says his language is “harmful to our community and creates an atmosphere of mistrust and fear” and asks him to keep the current employee handbook in place. >

San Francisco Catholic Students Slam Morality Clauses In Latest Protest, Say Archbishop Is Out Of Step

< Among the chief complaints, is that the archbishop is out of step not only with San Francisco, but also the Vatican.

“The bishop is going backwards when the Pope is going forwards with these types of issues. In recent years, the Pope has been an enormous progressive leader of the church when it came to very delicate issues that weren’t even talked about. And now, when there is promise, this archbishop is just setting us back,” Orantes said. >

Archbishop on crash course with S.F., state

February 18

< Kevin Fisher-Paulson and his husband send their two sons to St. John Catholic School, an elementary school in Glen Park.

They were rejected by four Catholic schools before being accepted at St. John, and they have no intention of leaving the school despite the archbishop’s very vocal opposition to the makeup of their family.

“Ultimately, I believe in the message of that guy 2,000 years ago who had this great idea: If you’re nice to your neighbors and your neighbors are nice to you, the world is going to be a great place,” said Fisher-Paulson, adding that he is more stubborn than Cordileone, “Just ask my husband.” >

How Lawmakers Are Trying to Control San Francisco’s Catholic Schools

cnsnews.com/commentary/ryan-t-anderson/how-lawmakers-are-trying-control-san-francisco-s-catholic-schools

San Franciscans are currently debating a simple question: Should the government respect the right of Catholic schools to be authentically Catholic?

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone thinks so. But eight California senators and assemblymen sent the archbishop a letter last month, saying that his actions in issuing new faculty guidelines “foment a discriminatory environment in the communities we serve.” On Feb. 23, two of the signers even asked the California Assembly Labor and Employment Committee and the Assembly Judiciary Committee to investigate the archdiocese’s actions.

When Democrats start using Republican staffers and visa versa, I will give this argument consideration. Until then, I will understand it as intolerant hypocrisy.

I think the teachers have a legitimate point though. Such guidelines can foster an atmosphere mistrust. I still think it is necessary, though I do not blame the AB. Rather, I blame those Catholics that insist on engaging in open scandal and then act as though it is a right of there’s to work as a Catholic employee in a Catholic organization. That is who brought this atmosphere of fear to their workplace.

The Archbishop in definitely on the right track with the contract changes. Pray for the rights of faith based schools to be honored in the land of the free.

Legally speaking, there are two different issues.

With respect to school policies like the handbook, I’m sure that is the decision of the school administration and the archbishop can do as he pleases. And he probably will. I doubt he cares what the parents or public feel. He has no legal impediments in his way.

With respect to the contract, especially the wording to classify the teachers as ministers and remove many of the legal protections others enjoy, the unionized teachers must agree to those changes. If the Archbishop and the union can’t agree to something, the only outcome would seem to be a strike and no school next fall until there is contract resolution.

Unions generally represent public school teachers, while private school tachers often sign individual contracts. I have not heard of a Catholic schoolteachers’ union in the San Francisco Archdiocese. Have you information that such a union exists?

May God bless you and all who visit thsi thread.

I refrained from this comment in the prayer thread about the same topic. In short, I think the AB should offer the 80% of faculty who signed the letter an opportunity next year to work for the public schools which uphold their values. There are plenty of new or newer teachers who would be happy to uphold Catholic teaching if employed by a Catholic School.

I hope the current teachers come around and choose to be a light in moral darkness of that city, as well.

👍

If the morality clause had been in place years ago, it may have stopped a lot of these teachers getting in the first place.

James 4:4-10
4You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
The Archbishop Cordileone is giving the Christians in SF,and all of us, a good lesson on James. We can’t love the sin of this world and God also. All the people who want to say the Archbishop hates certain people do not understand what true love is. He is lovingly admonishing those he is called to serve, just as James did 2,000 years ago.

Thank you Archbishop, we are still in need of faithful Christian servants, we all continue to fall away from God and need to be brought back.

I am wondering the same thing!

Try, like 50 years ago. 🙂

You’re right, though. This problem didn’t just develop overnight.

Yes, there is a Catholic teachers union in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Archdiocesan Federation of Teachers, Local 2240. (Their web site is totally useless, but the group exists.)

I agree. If teachers would rather teach in public schools, let them do so. A Catholic school teacher ought to be willing to uphold Catholic moral standards.

Different situations, but I am reminded of the time when most Air Traffic Controllers engaged in an illegal strike and were quickly terminated by President Reagan.

The Senators should have NOTHING to say about how the Archbishop runs his Catholic Schools. Neither should our Government. It’s time we stand up against this sort of pressure. What are they afraid of? And what are those who oppose it afraid of. Every single Catholic school should have nothing but authentically Catholic teachers teaching our children. God Bless, Memaw

It doesn’t look like Cordileone is a very popular Archbishop.

I can’t imagine the drunk driving charge helped very much.

I guess my question about this whole thing is why the archbishop chose to “highlight” the teachings that he did. Wouldn’t it have been better to just leave the wording as he had it in the opening of teachers as ministers of the Church needing to abide by all teachings of the Church?
