PRESENTATION OF POST-SYNODAL DOCUMENT ON THE EUCHARIST

VATICAN CITY, MAR 6, 2007 (VIS) - In the Holy See Press Office at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, the presentation will take place of the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation “Sacramentum Caritatis” on the Eucharist, source and summit of the life and mission of the Church. Participating in the press conference will be Cardinal Angelo Scola, patriarch of Venice, Italy, relator general of the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which was held in October 2005, and Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops.

I am curious to see what this document will contain. It will also be interesting to see if the muto proprio extending the indult of the Tridentine Mass will be included as predicted.

I’m at work so I don’t have a lot of time to post, but there is a rough draft of this document that’s already been released and translated by Zenit.org. Not everything in the draft will make it into the final copy, and there may be additional things added too. Nonetheless, the draft is fascinating and has gone almost unnoticed on here. Search my threads for “Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist imminent” (or something like that) and you’ll find the links to the draft. There are I think 50 propositions that made it into the document. Of course, not all are about the liturgy.

I’d love to know what people think of it. One possible change I didn’t see coming… moving the sign of peace to a different part of Mass…

I’m not an expert in apostolic exhortations, but my understanding is that it’s more of an outline than a rough draft - and perhaps a rough draft of an outline. I expect that unlike a rough draft, very little of the verbiage in the 50 propositions will make it into the document next week.

This column from John Allen back in 2005, when the Synod voted on the propositions, discusses a lot of detail about the propositions, the process, and what the exhortation may look like.

A few comments I liked from Fr. Francis Moloney:
“I believe there has been a fairly mediocre level of discussion among the bishops about ultimate theological and pastoral issues, which is not what I think the Holy Father actually wanted,” Moloney said…

Moloney predicted that the document Benedict will eventually produce will be “profoundly Biblical and patristic,” as well as “sensitive to the urgent pastoral questions” raised during the three weeks of discussions.

Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist one week away, Vatican announces

Vatican City, Mar 6, 2007 / 11:17 am (CNA).- After over a year of work, the Holy See will release the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist, titled “Sacramentum Caritatis,” on Tuesday, March 13th. The document, which flows from the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, held in October of 2005, has been highly anticipated in ecclesiastical circles.

A press conference for the document’s release will be held in the Press Office of the Holy See, led by Cardinal Angelo Scola, patriarch of Venice and relator general of the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, and Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops.

**The document is rumored to be a profound reflection on the Sacrament of the Eucharist and may call for a proposal and plan for liturgical reforms, including a greater use of the Latin language, Gregorian chant, classical polyphonic music. According to one source, the document may also call for “more decorum and liturgical sobriety in the celebration of the Eucharist, excluding dance and, as much as possible, applause.” **
 
To say that the propositions is a rough draft of the final document is overstating the case severely. The propositions were the results of the Synod that were presented to Pope Benedict XVI. Its not clear what process he has used to go from the propositions to the Apostolic Exhortation (this is, after all, his first). However its clear from Pope John Paul II’s many AE’s that the propositions give little indication of the overall direction and tone of the final document.

Do we have access to any propositions from previous exhortations? The reports indicated that it was highly unusual for the propositions to be released as happened in this case.
 
I know I’ve read them from several of hte previous Synods. I’ll have to do some digging to see if I can figure out where I found 'em. (The last one was about 5 years ago.)

Well, with any luck, the ever-increasing body of documents on the Mass will also be increasingly hard to ignore, even if it takes time…
 
It is very unlikely, imo, that the document will directly impact anything done at a local parish anytime soon. This type tends to be more teaching and/or explanatory in nature.

However, in the longer term, the document will help inform the process of liturgical change which is already well underway.

Pope Upholds Celibacy for Priests and Ban for Communion for Divorced Catholics Who Remarry

VATICAN CITY — [Pope Benedict XVI](javascript:siteSearch(‘Pope Benedict XVI’)😉 on Tuesday reiterated the Church’s ban on Communion for divorced Catholics who remarry and told Catholic politicians that the Vatican’s stance against abortion and gay marriage is "not negotiable."

In a 131-page document, the pope also upheld the Vatican’s requirement for celibacy for priests in the Latin rite Church. “Priestly celibacy lived with maturity, joy and dedication is an immense blessing for the Church and for society itself,” the pope wrote.

The document embraced recommendations made by bishops from around the world at a 2005 meeting at the Vatican that rejected any change in the celibacy requirement. Benedict said bishops should “on no account” lower admission standards to seminaries to compensate for the shortage of clergy in some parts of the world.

Seminarians should learn how to celebrate Mass in Latin, and faithful can be taught to recite the more common prayers in Latin, Benedict wrote.

Lately, on Wednesdays when the pope meets with thousands of pilgrims and tourists, the faithful have been invited to recite the [Lord’s Prayer](javascript:siteSearch(‘Lord’s Prayer’)😉 in Latin, with the text printed in the audience’s program.

Our parish is right on track. Our priest has been teaching us all of the common prayers in Latin. We pray the Sanctus and Agnus Dei in latin during Mass, and we practiced chanting the Pater Noster during our prayer before our faith formation classes Sunday evening. 👍

It is a very new experience for me and my family.
 
I’ve just scanned parts of it briefly (I just got up, coffee hasn’t kicked in yet), and it looks very promising! 😃
