I believe I can address two subjects with one title! Please replay
  1. I have not been able to get over the amount of talking going on in my Church before and after Mass. I am often to the point of wanting to correct people and say “Excuse but do you realize where you are?” Then I note to myself that many are daily Mass goers and people who serve in church (ushers etc.). Maybe they feel so comfortable that they have lost their sense of awe. Is that OK? It is so bad that I was once in confession and the priest interrupted me to go out to tell people to be quiet that confession was going on! He has done so much, even having taped music played before Mass. Does anyone else suffer from this? I feel like it is pride on my part.
  2. Does the Church still require that we be buried in blessed areas of a cemetery? My inlaws gave my husband and me two plots that are not in a “catholic” blessed area. Any time I bring this up people look at me like I am crazy and I am embarrassed to ask anymore.😊😊

When I was at mass for Christmas, I came early to be sure of a seat, but happened to sit directly behind a couple of chatters who were going at it nonstop. After several minutes and it seemed they had no intention of becoming silent, I asked one lady if she was Catholic? She said, “Yes, why do you want to know?” I mentioned that I thought they were noncatholics and did not realize they need to be silent in Church. She did not answer, but at least they stopped talking until mass began.

If you are near the person and can make the suggestion tactfully, I would recommend it, even if they ignore you. Other than that, it’s kind of a losing battle that belongs to the priest to correct them with gentle reminders.

I believe we may be buried in an ordinary cemetery and can have the priest bless the plot just prior to the time of interment. Check with him on this to be sure, though.

It depends on which Church I am attending but my home parish has the same problem. I completely agree with your concerns as I try to get there early enough to pray and meditate prior to Mass and these talkers make that almost impossible. They are friendly and engaging in welcoming conversations but it is impossible to concentrate with it going on. Personally, I feel that they think it is OK until Mass starts. Tis Saturday I went to another parish as they have the only early Mass and it was wonderful the respect shown to others. People were talking before and after Mass but very quietly.

Thank you so much. Did not realize it was as simple as having the priest bless the ground! I like you other reply. I know (for me) it will be better to suffer in silence. My anger flares up and maybe this is just a test-l:)) Seriously, if we all could only just realize WHO resides in the tabernacle I doubt the problem would exist.

Where are the nuns from the 50’s? They would fix it with one look!!

Ave Maria!

It’s not pride! It’s righteous anger! People shouldn’t be talking in Church. I’ve been to parishes where as you walk in you’re given a great big welcome and asked for a summary of your week, which for some people goes on for a long time. All in normal speaking tones. After Mass people immediately rush out (so much for thanksgiving for receiving Our Lord!) or stay in the pews… to chat! People just don’t know where they are anymore. They either don’t understand or don’t care. It’s not okay. At least your Priest is trying to do something about it so God bless him! If you can, take some ear plugs. Don’t be afraid that people may think you’re trying to make some kind of statement. You’re only trying to treat the place as holy. Another option is to pray out loud after Mass. I had to do it because I just couldn’t concentrate on my Rosary. People don’t really care either way but at least you get to concentrate. I can only give you my experience here, but generally people don’t take it well no matter how nicely you ask them to keep it down. If you have no idea that sacred space where Jesus Christ is present deserves quiet, you’d of course be indignant that some punk decides to ask you to keep it dowm - hey, after all, you’re only talking about the football not anything bad right!

I used to think, boy, if they don’t respect me enough to let me pray, at least respect God. I can’t say anything more than you should take some earplugs, pray aloud if you’re distracted, and perhaps think about finding a different parish. Mental prayer is so important; St Alphonsus says that without it it is very difficult to be saved. God deserves better than a Church filled with chattering. You need better to save your soul. God Bless your efforts!

I don’t know about Church law, but as for me I wouldn’t want to be buried in any place other than consecrated ground. To have the ground blessed; to know that Catholics can come and pray for my soul; and to be among the faithful at the Resurrection (please God I save my soul!).

God Bless!

I guess I am lucky that I live near and attend an ethnic Catholic Church in NYC in which the congregation is largely immigrants from Poland. It has only two services a week in English! The Poles pretty much follow the customs and traditions of the old country, so there is reverence and respect for our Lord in the church. Idle conversations are all but unknown, and on the rare occasions they occur, the parties involved are politely, but firmly, sushed by others!

we had a convent what was closed down because of the lack of nuns so the nuns body was move to the parish church sanitary

Every church has the gossipers and loud voiced people. Ours is no different.

Priest has complained to them but still it happens.

The worst bit for me is that we have two parishioners that always reply, during mass, to the prayers etc in a very loud voice! They have to be heard responding louder than anyone in the church!!!

There have been times when it was all I could do to keep from standing up and saying will you all please just shut up! I don’t have any other church in the area to check out, but I think the noise problem must exist everywhere.

Wish our new Pope would send out the message to ceast and desist the chatty noise.

Sorry. Just get so frustrated at times about this.

I know how you fell it make my blood boil when people are talking in the church we got a new parish cent use it instead of the church where the blessed Sacrament is reserved
