Yeah, you better duck!
I was wondering that myself as I watched the video. I little more specific would help.In seriousness, the 1958 “Sacred Congregation of Rites” (along with many church documents relating to music, it seems) lists what is appropriate, but not what is not appropriate. The classic organ is listed (ruling out reed organs?), and then says that “some instruments are so associated with secular music” that they cannot be used. I am a cultural imperialist and believe everyone ought to use European modes of worship, so I don’t disagree; however, couldn’t they have given us any idea of what is not appropriate?
I think we’re allowed our opinion too.Lol I saw this a while back, and thoght about putting up this video, but I remember all those “sensitive” people who like to come to the traditional forum just to “teach & correct” us from our medieval way of thinking ja ja ja.
I’m very happy being “backward and medieval”. Plus I really don’t care what other more sensitive types think of me.
Amen. However, after being chastised by a moderator a while back, I try to be as charitable as possible.
Cheers
AMEN!!! Take those silly guitars, drums, and pianos out!!
Speaking of which, I’m really bummed out. We were hoping to go to Holy Rosary in Portland, Oregon tonight for a Solemn High Mass in the Dominican Rite. Organist James O’Donnell was to perform selections from Anton Kodaly “Missa Brevis” and Cantores in Ecclesia was to sing the Mass.Today is the feast day of St. Cecilia. Patron saint of music and musicians.![]()
I am always impressed when I find people are willing to drive great distances for beauty and orthadoxy, I drive for 30 minutes and am “local” for our Holy Rosary.Speaking of which, I’m really bummed out. But its snowing hard and its VERY icey so we are not going down.(98 miles each way)
And here, my friends, is our first breach in the wall.Traditional music is old and antiquated.
Nobody understands Latin.
Gregorian Chant and Sacred Polyphony are too difficult for your average parish to learn.
This isn’t the Middle Ages anymore. Please join the 21st century!
I just so happen to love the guitar, and since I love it, it’s appropriate for Mass. I also love the tambourine, the maracas, the triangle, and the electric guitar. These should all be allowed pride of place in the liturgy.
Mass is about a communion feast at which we the believers come together at the table of love and companionship to celebrate our diversity. Take your Euro-centric nonsense to a KKK meeting, won’t ya!?
I believe our friend was being sarcastic. And here, my friends, is our first breach in the wall.
That’s nice that you expressed your opinion. Now you can move on. Pax†
Oh, and by the way, I’m reporting you for that last remark.
Good luck with that CF. Im sure the mods will let it slide. However as soon as you chastise a heretical statement you are ‘uncharitable’.And here, my friends, is our first breach in the wall.

Sarcastic or not, the reference to the KKK was way out of line and uncalled for. But, of course I will pray for him/her.I believe our friend was being sarcastic. If not, let’s ask St. Cecilia to pray for him/her!
I love it enough to spend a great deal of my spare time practicing it! I use it daily in the Liturgy of the Hours, sing in a small schola that does it in local parishes once a month, and attend Sunday Mass in an abbey that uses it daily for the Mass and Divine Office.I believe our friend was being sarcastic. If not, let’s ask St. Cecilia to pray for him/her!
Don’t you just sit in awe at the beauty of our simple chant? There is no rhythm to speak of, and no harmony but that which is suggested by the modal lines.Consequently, no drum sets can be used to flesh out the beat, and guitars cannot be employed for a high-flying ‘feeling’. Even when Gregorian chant is intoned in the vulgar tongue of a region, it elevates the commonplace language to high, solemn, repentant heights.
Can anyone hold to the position that this:

… creates a much more sacred space than this: youtube.com/watch?v=sqwV9l-U8ds ?
Acoustic guitars, “professional” pop singers (as Catholic as they may be), and hordes of unwashed laity simply cannot glorify God very well in one voice. The greatest glory given to God in music is through well-trained seminarian choirs, monks, friars, and dedicated schola cantora. The peasants in the pews ought to sit back in pure awe and joy, listening to a single, small group of men echo the powers of Heaven. The angels don’t strum guitars!
