The sacrifice for sins
And how do we avail ourselves of “it”? If you believe “it” was “finished” on Calvary, then why do we need faith? Why do we need the Gospel? Christ could have just finished “it” and not bothered us with all this discipleship stuff.

The Sacrifice of Calvary must have some means of being appropriated by US in time and space because the Lord promised to be with the Apostles when He commissioned them to carry on making disciples of all nations until the end of days.

For Catholics, the Mass is part of how we enter the finished mystery of Redemption in time and space.

The sacrifice for sins
Yes. At that moment, the sacrifice was finished. (Notice that Christ died at the very same moment that the first lamb of Passover was sacrificed in the Temple - at 3:00 pm.)

Keep in mind that the blood of the sacrificed lamb only covered those who ate of its flesh after preparing themselves in the proper manner - not just randomly anybody (and not even just anybody who ate its flesh - only those who were ritually purified in the proper manner).

So also, Christ’s sacrifice applies to those who consume His body and blood, soul and divinity in Holy Communion at Mass, in a worthy manner as members of His Church.

To avail ourselves of the sacrifice for sins,
we need to believe Jesus was the Messiah and He came in the flesh and we need to repent of our sins

I don’t “get” things that are made up
Made up? Not according to the Prophet Malachi

11 For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.

The Gentiles according to Malachi offer a clean and pure oblation. This oblation wholy clean is Christ’s sacrifice.

So you agree that the one sacrifice can be applied repeatedly ad infitum? Therefore your arguement in saying that the Eucharist does not remit sin is defeated because the Eucharist applies directly the same sacrifice of Calvary.

Catholics believe that. Nothing in that statement in any way cuts out the Mass.

Catholics also believe that Jesus said to have eternal life we must “Eat my flesh; drink my Blood”. Since in the literalistic way of looking at things, that is not possible, we believe that He meant in some way to provide us a way of obeying that command IN REALITY in time and space. That is the Mass.

Wow. I read all 4 pages 🙂

Here’s the original question:
What about the Catholic Church’s description in the 1500s of the sacrifice of the mass would have lead educated persons to believe that Catholics were professing a form of sacrifice that, today at least, it seems clear that they are not?
Nothing.

The beef with the Mass was a result not a cause. It was a result of their anti-clericalism.

Look for the 1st domino –

Priests & Papacy

No Priests, no Mass.

The Mass would be another domino down the line – I want to say the 2nd domino – then there’s images, relics, art, vestments, architecture, etc.

So if we’re going to do away with the Mass, why? They can’t answer, “well, we got rid of the priests.”

You keep refering to time and space. I don’t understand the concept of time and space as opposed to no time and no space or whatever the opposite is.

Christ’s crucifixion happened in 33 AD on a hill near Jerusalem. That’s a really long time ago, and pretty far away, for most of us.

In order for the crucifixion to have any effect on us, it has to travel through time and space to get to here and now.

How it does that is by means of the Catholic Mass, which makes it present to us here and now, in an unbloody manner. We are able to eat and drink of Christ’s Sacrifice on the Cross in Holy Communion at the Mass.

Are you serious?
Is this what the church is teaching now?
Time and space in a galaxy far far away.

Outside of time and space is plainly put like this. In Heaven, there is no concept of time, or space. Time and space doesn’t exist. God is outside time. He transcents time.

We as human beings cannot comprehend the nature of God. Our mind is limited. God’s mind is unlimited. We are finite beings. We don’t understand the Trinity in its full context. It helps explain the nature of God, as a Triune God, but how it is possible, I cannot explain it.

Peter put it best. A day for God is like thousands years.

Not at all. We can’t be saved without the blood of Christ - Christ didn’t bleed spiritual blood; it was the real thing.

How do Protestants get the blood of Christ on them, to wash their sins away? 🤷
