Hi - this question is similar, though not identical, to ones asked before.

I am learning to become a Sacristan. And I have been receiving different answers about proper procedures.

Our tabernacle is located apart and is in a higher location, behind the altar. When I pass in front of the altar and thus, the tabernacle, do I bow or do I genuflect in front of the closed tabernacle? Does it matter if I have something in my hands, e.g., a candle lighter, Bible/books, cloths, banners, etc.?

Thanks.

Do what you are best capable of. I tend to bow when pregnant or if I have an infant or toddler in my arms. Which is pretty much my life these days. Without a kid, I will geneuflect.

I was taught by multiple priests to genuflect twice - once the first time I pass the tabernacle and the last time. All other times passing, a profound bow if not carrying anything and a head bow (nod) if carrying something. Our tabernacle was not visible to the main church, however — but I had to pass it on each trip between church nave/sanctuary and the sacristy. If I knew someone was watching, for their sake, I might be more deliberate in my actions; when I was alone, I knew Jesus knew what I was up to - serving his people. For reference: I served in sacristan/priest’s assistant/pastoral staff roles for about 18 years before taking my place in the pew to focus on being a parent.
