Saddened by a website

The accusation that Catholics (and Orthodox) worship Mary is quite common. I even had a religious studies prof teach it. Of course she also taught that she was a pre-Catholic Celtic Christian, even though most of her ideas were clearly from the reformation.

For some of those accusations the most you can do is shake your head and pray for them. Nothing will convince people of some of these untruths.

i think that is the approach we WANT to take becaue we are human but this kind of thing doesn’t change by burying the head i n the sand… if there is a way on that site to post responses, we should do so…

I thought a “black box” was something that phone hackers used back in the seventies. I used to know one (a phone hacker, not the black box), Of course that all died out when hackers found out about computers.

So when you walk and share the “gospel message of Christ” do you tell people that Cathlics are wrong, that Catholics are all going to hell, that Catholics worship Satan, that the Catholic Church is the “Whore of Babylon” and Catholics suckle at her teats?

Do you tell people that Catholics are bad people, that we are evil because we believe in good works and not just faith, that we are fools, or we are stupid, or we will “get ours” when we face God?

Or do you tell people the truth?

I heard the gospel and I responded and had a radical conversion experiece…Same with my druggy coworker the same year …Our coworkers wondered what happened to us as we started telling them about Jesus and His plan for their redemption…Some though we were wacked and others listened…

Catholics love Mary. There are many reasons why but I will just give you one.

Do you follow the Ten Commandments in the OT? I assume that you, as a Christian, do. The following is one of those Commandments:

“Honor thy Father and thy Mother.”

Mary is Jesus’ mother. Jesus followed the Ten Commandments. He honored his mother. Now we are supposed to be like Jesus, are we not?? So we also honor Jesus’ mother. Did Jesus love his mother? Absolutely. And in loving Mary we are acting as Christ-like as we can.

We do not worship her. That is absolutely forbidden as it goes against the first of the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord thy God…and thou shalt not have strange gods before me.”

If a Catholic worships Mary he/she is not following Catholic Church doctrine. It is unacceptable behavior.

I’m sure you realize that Catholics are human beings and we sin, just like you do. Sometimes people get confused by what the Catholic Church really teaches. I would like to give a quote about this from Bishop Fulton Sheen:

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church—which is, of course, quite a different thing. These millions can hardly be blamed for hating Catholics because Catholics “adore statues;” because they “put the Blessed Mother on the same level with God;” because they “say indulgence is a permission to commit sin;” because the Pope “is a Fascist;” because the Church “is the defender of Capitalism.

“If the Church taught or believed any one of these things, it should be hated, but the fact is that the Church does not believe nor teach any one of them. It follows then that the hatred of the millions is directed against error and not against truth. As a matter of fact**, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do.”** (emphasis added)

I added emphasis to the last line because I think it sums up what Bishop Sheen is saying here.

Actually I have never met anyone (at least in person) that believes Jack Chick is right. Maybe that’s because he spews hatred at just about every religion that isn’t *sola fide *and sola scriptura.

I’m very glad that you found God, no matter how you found him. I think that many paths lead to God. I’m sorry that there is so much of what appears to be “anti-anything that isn’t Catholic” going on right now. It isn’t about you. Not really. It’s about Jack Chick. Catholics (and people who believe in other faiths) get insulted and angry and we laugh because we don’t want to cry.

I think I can speak for every Catholic here by telling you that we really want only the best for you and that we all can meet in heaven which is our true home.

I just want to share this. Yesterday, while eating in a Mexican resturant, I looked up on the wall behind the cash register while paying the bill. There was a hanging calendar there with a picture maybe around the size of a 12" square. The picture had three images, the face of the Virgin Mary, the face of the Pope, and a cross with a stickman type character hanging on it. The image of the Virgin Mary was centrally located in the picture and the largest, followed by just a little smaller image of the Pope’s face on the left, but the smallest image and tucked in the lower right corner was the image of a stickman hanging on the cross.

It brought back memories of my earlier days while learning that Jesus Christ was Lord and Savior. Back then I was so ashamed of my sinful life style that I couldn’t even raise my eyes to look at a picture or a statue of Jesus.

In the midst of a flower garden at a local church near where I lived, there was a sitting bench and a statue of Jesus Christ. I would go there and sit and pray, but I still could not draw my eyes upon the statue of Jesus. It took several months of reading the Bible, praying when I came to a heart filled understanding that Jesus was who He said He was. And I could trust Him to uphold his promise of the forgiveness for my past sinful life style and to keep me forevermore. There was a covenant that Jesus Christ and I made one day when I was able to finally lift my eyes and reach out with my hand to trust Him and touch the statue of Him in the garden.

Now I know this statue didn’t have any healing powers and all that. I’m just trying to explain my process of how I was eternally dammed for my sin and unworthy to recieve the forgiveness offered to me through the completed work of Christ Jesus on the cross.

So for me and many others, who have found this pearl in their hearts, knowing that it is Christ Jesus who is Lord and who saves and keeps, seeing these other enlarged images on the calendar of the Pope and Mary, do Christ injustice, at least in my view, and hurts me when I see it.

When I saw that term I immediately thought that it was an abbreviation for “Seventh Day Adventists” too but then I looked closely and I couldn’t figure it out.

But I feel bad about Hiskid leaving this thread because I think I am to blame.

I guess I have had so many people attacking my faith (and me) that I use laughing as an defense mechanism. But it wasn’t appropriate for me to post what I did, although I didn’t mean to be nasty. I obviously need to be more careful in how I word my posts to non-Catholics. Wow. I blew it - sorry, guys.

I need to be more Christian - that is for sure.

My biggest problem with the Jack Chick publications, and a few other so-called Christian groups out there is that they prey on the unwary, and the uneducated. Those that know little or nothing about the history of Christianity and they become empty vessels to be filled with fantasy presented as fact. No evidence is ever proffered for any of the claims, and unless the victim starts asking questions the perpetrators get away with it. Perhaps their motives are good, to gain souls for Christ, but as T.S. Eliot once prayed :
“O Lord deliver me from the man of excellent intention and impure heart. For the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.”

I didn’t mean for it to be nasty but I will admit that the love of Christ was not exactly shining in my heart when I wrote it. I’ve defended Catholicism on another forum and ad hominem attacks were thrown all over the place. Someone would start a thread called “All Catholics are Going to Hell!!” and of course I was there to comment and although I tried to be Christian in my posts, some of my anger showed there also. So I was wrong. I guess he thought I was accusing him of saying those things and I can see how it could have been taken the wrong way.

When someone threw that “Whore of Babylon” phrase at me I cried because I couldn’t understand how anybody could believe that Christ would found such a thing. It hurt me a lot!! I then started throwing it around once in awhile to other Catholics who understood that I had turned it into a joke. Because when something scares me and hurts me I turn it into a joke.

So I still apologize and I have PM’d the poster with another apology which I hope he takes in the spirit of Christianity. I try to be a good soldier for Christ but I think I fell off my horse.

When I first logged on this morning I was going to post an apology to the OP because we have allowed this thread to turn away from what she said into a diatribe (however well deserved) against Jack Chick. I wanted to start a new thread, specifically on Jack Chick, and I think I will do that.

As I tried to explain, there was a significant difference in size of the three images in the picture. The picture elevated the Virgin Mary and the Pope and left the one Christ who really saves as a stickman.
