safe catholic bible study

i want to study the bible alone and with others…i am catholic and many of my friends are christains but not catholics…i know there are different beliefs with bible interpatations and i want to be able to spot a difference during a study with non catholics…i don’t want to be lured away from my catholic faith by not knowing catholic truth…what is a good catholic study bible and is there any works or directives i can use to “be aware.”…such as…a protestant believes…while a catholic believes…

Douay-Rheims is your “official” Catholic Bible. There should be related links to purchase your new Bible.

Do you want a Catholic study Bible or a Catholic Bible study?

For the latter, you can’t do better than the D-R with the Haydock commentary.

For the former, I recommend The Great Adventure Bible study if you are looking for a Genesis to Revelation study and the Catholic Scripture Study series if you want to go into a book at a time very in-depth.

In my opinion, when studying with non-Catholics, the biggest danger isn’t the interpretations but the lack of other documents. The above studies, for example, make excellent use of the Catechism and the Early Church Fathers to complete the study.
 
I hear the Nerf Catholic study Bible is the safest around 😃

An excellent supplement to a study bible is Catholicism for Dummies, written by two very sharp and well-educated (PhD, ThD) Priests. Every Catholic home should have one. Even better if protestant homes had a copy, so they would know what the Church actually teaches. Highly recommended.

The USCCB appears to promote the NAB translation. If the OP is going to be studying the Bible with protestants, the NAB translation is probably a much better one to use than D-R. The NAB was translated from the oldest texts available in their original languages just like protestant translations. This makes NAB much closer to protestant translations than the older D-R that was itself a translation of a translation. The doctrine differences are tricky enough to navigate without having to argue over translational differences as well.

Thank you for your candor George. I couldnt agree more. 👍 My being a former Baptist though, has helped me in my debates with various other groups that claim to be Christian and are not. Those that deny the Trinity, and other essential doctrines. there are however interdenominational study groups, such as the one my ex wife is part of, who have Catholics in them, who do a good job of steering away from the more controversial issues. She herself is Mennonite, and seems to be able to play nicely with others. Peace to you and yours. 🙂

However, the NAB is currently being revised, as there are many complaints regarding its inclusive language, its “squishy” translation, and its troublesome foot notes.

The Douay-Rheims is a much older translation, preceding the King James Version by two years, and with similar archaic language as the KJV uses. It is based on Saint Jerome’s Latin Vulgate.

Don’t rule out the New Jerusalem Bible, although it tends to neuter genders as well.

My fave: The Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE) by Ignatius Press. It is highly recommended and has been very well received. It is my daily bible. Ignatius has just released a NT study version of it that is highly acclaimed.

I carried my Douay Rheims with me to Iraq, and have never regretted it. however, I wish I could have fit my NAB in one of my packs also…then I wouldnt be stuck with a second rate, NIV for cross translation. :mad: I will have to check with my chaplain to see if I can get a NAB. I recognize many of the differences, and it only makes me irate. LOL! Peace 🙂

I do not have an NIV. I have never burned a bible. There is a reason that I can say both things.

I have a very bad habit of picking up strays. this got me evicted from a trailer park when I picked up a stray mastif…they thought she was a pit bull. 😃 And the same goes for bibles. someone had left this particular NIV on a bench in the elements when they left Iraq. So I thought I would give it a home, until I can go see my protestant relatives…🙂 Call me sentimental. I love books, and animals. I did manage to get the mastiff a good home btw. 😉

The mastiff did not have an agenda. Can’t say that about the NIV.
 
maybe i can clarify myself…i am not going to study with protestants and evangelicals to debate them nor to proove their faults, i only want to be able see when we are discussing something where catholic beliefs differ…such as the “born again” topic…i now know the catholic truth there, but there are other beliefs that some christains have that catholics differ…i have the dh bible but it doesnt explain where a passage interpeted for catholics may differ largely the same niv passage…maybe this is more clear thanks bill

the internet may help. have you tried to google, differences in Cathlolic and Protestant bibles? or Changes made in Protestant bibles from Cathlolic? hope this helps. Peace 🙂
