Friends: St Agnes in St. Paul, Minnesota: One of the best and most orthodox parishes in the world is in danger of having to close its high school due to declining enrollment and an operational shortfall.

They have until April 30th to reverse the trend. If you are in a position to help:

The Saint Agnes Schools, 530 Lafond Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55103 Phone: 651-228-1161

St. Agnes is a rarity among Catholic schools in that it is actually, Catholic. Many vocations have sprung from this school.

There is a story about it here: twincities.com/portlet/article/html/fragments/print_article.jsp?articleId=5735235&siteId=569

and here: rschooltoday.com/se3bin/clientschool.cgi?schoolname=school117

So why if orthodox Catholicsm appeals as some argue is not this parish and its school appealing - drawing support as in numbers? Seems troubling to say the least.

In today’s *Pioneer Press *(St. Paul) is a story with signs of hope: St. Agnes High School has an additional week to increase enrollment and earn money towards its operating budget deficit. The deadline is now May 8th (prior deadline was April 30th).

Donations should be sent to:

Fr. John Ubel
St. Agnes Schools
530 Lafond Ave
St. Paul MN 55103

Ticket sales for the school’s production of Beauty and the Beast which performs this weekend and next can be purchased in advance (651) 228-1636 or at the door.

An additional performance of *Beauty and the Beast *has been added for Thursday, May 3rd at 7:30 p.m. No tickets will be sold for this performance but donations are welcome.

Please join me in supporting this school. I sent my check last week. I’m not an alum, I don’t have kids in the school, St. Agnes is not even my parish. But, I think it is important to support GOOD Catholic schools.

This is like five years old.
Which raises the question… is St. Agnes School still open?

The answer is… yes. 🙂

And its quite the place to go if you want your children to learn Latin. :o
At Saint Agnes, students begin Latin study in first grade and continue through Junior High, learning ecclesiastical pronunciation. Latin is also offered in the High School at levels I-IV, providing students with the grammatical study, vocabulary, and translation experience necessary to read Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil as well as ecclesiastical texts such as the Roman Missal, the Breviary, and various writings of the Church.
The classroom study of Latin is augmented and applied through the prayer and liturgical life of the students in weekly Mass, which is said in Latin on a rotating basis with English. Students also apply their knowledge of Latin through the beautiful chant music learned in Concert Choir and sung during the sacred liturgy.

In addition to the above, four years of Latin instruction are available in high school

Unfortunately, Fr. Ubel will be leaving in one month to become rector of the Cathedral. I hope the school and parish can find a replacement equal to him.

Thanks for your great post Dale!👍 I wish I could go back in time & go to school there! 😉 I am so happy for them! How refreshing!

And yes, YTC I realize what you stated, but I think its important to bring it back up, so if people want to donate to such a worthy place/cause, they can do so.
How many schools in the US do you hear about, have such a real Catholic program?
And with Latin! YAY!!!

When I get married (if its in my future, God willing), I would like to send my children to such a place 😃 or homeschool.
I love hearing about places/stories like this! Especially since they were able to stay open!!!

GOD BLESS THEM!!!:gopray2:

Thanks for the links Dale!👍

PAX,

Praying for the success of this wonderful school!:gopray2:

St. Agnes has an extremely high quality liturgical program to uphold, and I do not doubt that the bishop will find a replacement who is more than suitable. St. Agnes is truly one of the jewel parishes of this whole continent, in my opinion, and to assign anyone other than the best seems like it would be practically criminal to me.

Glad the school is doing well. I still find it interesting though that sure an excellent school was in dire straits to begin with. Does anyone know of a study or mitigation program that they put into place to stop something like that from happening again? Even $3M doesn’t last long and it has been over five years since the donations were made.

Saint Agnes is in is in a not so affluent part of the city. It serves many underprivileged kids. I don’t have personal knowledge of their finances but I am speculating this might be part of the problem. It is difficult to attract kids from affluent families (from the suburbs) to shore up the bottom line.

That being said, Saint Agnes is incredible at producing vocations and their liturgies are breathtaking.
