Saint Augustine's quote on women?

An old man posted on facebook a quote of saint Augustine towards women.

“Women should not be enlightened or educated in any way. They should, in fact, be segregated as they are the cause of hideous and involuntary erections in holy men.”

He uses this to undermine Christianity. I think he is an agnostic, though not admitted. He believes all religions are blind trying to describe God in their own way. But he still believe in God.

Anyway, how should i react on the quote? How can we defend our faith if indeed some of the fathers/doctors of the church did something like this in their apostolic life? Thank you in advance.

I came from an augustinian school that’s why it somehow saddens me.
 
I don’t think Augustine ever said this, it’s made up. Anyway, the lesson is always ask for the original source to be cited and until you’ve checked it out don’t believe what you see on facebook. 🙂
 
When people can’t go after an idea, they discredit the person. I’d look into the validity of the quote. People spread false information about the Church very frequently.

I searched the internet and found no Augustinian source for this quote. If there was one you can guarantee it would be published!
 
Yes, I don’t think so too. I googled it and saw some pages containing it. And yes, it’s unbelievable until proven, and the burden of proof is not mine.
 
Even if they were his words, just because someone is a saint doesn’t mean they were right about everything.

Exactly. I hate how secular the Internet is, and how people will try to disprove Christianity based on one quote. And this one in question probably isn’t even real.

Sometimes it’s just :banghead:
 
It is not a real quote until someone cites the source of the text. No one has ever cited the source! It was certainly made up to discredit Augustine and Christianity.
 
Here is a website to check out quotes like this. It says:
OWD (On the Way to Debunked). No one lists an actual work of Augustine as a source. Most say “source unknown” if anything.

Origins? Helen Ellerbe’s Dark Side of Christian History is said to be a source at times, but it’s not clear whether she made it up or got it from someone.

And I’d bet she doesn’t cite the work by Augustine containing the quote.
