Has anyone seen or purchased this edition? Red letter, new layout I guess…looks interesting…but I do not want it if it has the same layout as the Ignatius. If anyone owns one, please post a few shots of the text. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I ordered a copy today online. I have been looking for a genuine leather RSV-CE for a long time, so I couldn’t resist. Although, like you, I sure hope it isn’t the same layout as the original Ignatius version. And hopefully, they included the cross-references that were included in the Ignatius edition, but absent in the Oxford ones. I’ll let you know what I think about it when it arrives.

Here are some of the other extras that are included in this edition:
Presentation Page Words of Christ in Red
Full-color New Testament Maps of the Holy Land
Beautiful Color Paintings Depicting the Life of Christ
Family Records Pages
3-Year Cycle of readings for Sundays and Weekday Masses
Measures 8" x 5.5

I found this on another site. I had been emailing St. Benedict Press for the past week, but without a response.

Thanks!! We are looking for exactly the same thing…so if you like it I am positive I will as well. It looks as if it has everything that I have been wanting in an RSV—but I will not buy it if it does not have cross references. I am quite excited about the red letter, too. Hopefully it will work out. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.
 
Subscribing on this as I’m quite interested in their new Douay Rheims edition. I have an older one, that frankly, I’m not real happy with quality wise.

These new Bibles from Saint Benedict look really nice on line, but I have yet to see a real review of one. I’m particularly interested in what the “Premium Ultra Soft” editions are like. (That, and of course, the layout\quality in general).

I hate it when I can’t find something like this in a local book store, as I’m tired of purchasing on line, and the quality not being what I expect.

I am a little apprehensive about them though since I once thought that Baronius Press’ would’ve been really good, and I was frankly disappointed.

All the changes in this new D-R seem to be for the better. (Red Letters, improved cross-references, better spacing on the end notes, nicer illustrations, etc)

I’d like to get hold of one but they’re quite expensive to be shipped to the UK 😦

I saw a Bible blog that had shots of the new DR’s pages, but forget the link. Can someone post some extra pics if/when they have one?

I also have the Baronius Press version. I ordered it maybe 6 months ago, and am really not happy with it quality wise. When I ordered, it was listed as genuine leather, and it’s bonded of course. I think they changed this at some point, and it was misrepresented on Amazon, but it was the only copy\version available at the time, so I kept it. To me, it feels like a piece of cardboard as far as the cover goes.

Anyway, that’s the main reason I am highly interested in these, but it’s bugging me I can’t actually touch, see and feel it before purchasing!
 
Yes I feel exactly the same, about baronius and that I can’t see this new edition before buying!

// when i went to the basilica in washington, d.c. (book store section) i did get a chance to touch the douay-rheims premium ultra soft edition by st. benedict press…the cover is very smooth and felt a little similar to leather…i guess that’s the imitation leather…

The genuine leather is nice, too, but I will warn you it is not as soft as the genuine leather that comes from Oxford. I love the leather on my Oxford Annotated RSV. I’m wondering if the layout will be similar to that of the Scepter RSV. I have it, but it is looking a bit ragged. 🙂 I may order the St. Benedict RSV soon so if anyone gets theirs in and wants to post pictures, I’d love to see them, too!

I ordered the genuine leather RSV-CE from St. Benedict Press over a week ago and have yet to receive it. Once I do, I will post some pictures, as well as a short review at my blog. catholicbibles.blogspot.com
 
As this thread seems to have quite an interest, just an fyi. I just phoned one of my local Catholic book stores, and they have two of the Douay Rheims coming in the near future. One on the actual “leather bound” edition, the other in the “premium ultra soft” cover. They are going to call me as soon as they are in so I can check them out.

I’m really interested in what the premium ultra soft is like, as I have an older NAB from Fireside that uses this type of cover, and it is VERY nice. In some ways, I actually like it more than the genuine leather, as it is very flexible, and durable. Anxious to see if it is the same kind or not.

I’ll post some pics once I actually decide on, and pick up a version. 🙂
 
Got my Douay “Ultra Soft” a few days ago from Mark at All Catholic Books, only took 3 days to get it!

Kudos to St Benedict Press / Tan Publishing (They are one in the same) what a beautiful Bible

I love my Baronuis, it’s from 2004 so it’s the Genuine Moroccan leather, before the change, but I got this one for the newer layout, ect.

When I talked to Tan they told me the Ultra soft cover is more leather like than the real leather.

They call the Ultra soft “Dura hide” its soft leather.

I was disappointed when I first took it out of the box because it actually looked like “rubber”

But I was so impressed with the way it was laid out that I was determined to keep it.

The layout, font, typeset, references, maps, physical size, everything about it was great,just what I wanted, except that darn cover!

Since I was repeatedly assured that "Durahide was genuine leather, I saw no reason why a coat of black shoe polish would not work.

I tried “liquid polish first and it didn’t want to “penetrate” so I tried the Kiwi canned wax and it worked beautifully.

Before “you try this at home” I have to post this disclaimer.” I will not take any responsibility for any one who tries this and messes up their new bible.”

I put a very small amount of black canned Kiwi paste shoe polish on a rag and rubbed it onto the cover using small circular motions, just like polishing a pair of shoes “old school” very careful not to get any of the polish or polish residue on the gold gilding. I put a sheet of paper between the cover and the pages, for extra protection, but I was still very cautious about getting any of the polish on the edges of the cover where it might come in contact with the pages. I applied a couple of coats rubbing the polish off to a dull shine between coats. I “restored” an old leather bible this way so I was comfortable doing this and it worked beautifully. After the final coat I continued to make sure all the excess polish was gone by rubbing again and again a few times the following day. The final result is a soft leather cover that looks like leather, on my new Douay Rheims Bible and that makes me so very happy.👍

I have a copy of the Douay-Rheims Bible published by Saint Benedict Press (the black genuine leather edition), and I am very pleased with it. It is the most beautiful Douay-Rheims version I have come across, and is very high quality.

At some point when I have a little more money, I also wish to purchase the RSV-CE they publish.
 
sounds like everyone wants this new rsv, but nobody has one yet! I emailed the publisher weeks ago but they have not replied…I would figure that in a bad economy businesses would want to do what they could to foster sales–a simple email to do so isn’t asking too much 🤷 Guess they really don’t want to sell one to me…

I actually called them earlier this week and spoke with someone in customer service, since I had ordered the genuine leather edition. They told me that they just received the new RSV’s and would be working through the orders this week and next. I asked if I should expect my copy by next week and the answer was yes.

Might I ask how the genuine leather is? I’m still torn between it and the premium ultra soft version. I know on some occasions, I have actually preferred the “non leather, but super duper soft” covers. (As in a Fireside NAB that I have that actually feels nicer than leather, and seems more durable).

Is the genuine leather version from them “soft”, as in hold it by the spine and it folds over easily? Or is it almost more like a hard cover? I’m still hoping my local shop gets a copy of each, but I’d really like to pick up a new version sooner than later at this point.

Assuming I’m understanding your question correctly, I would state that it would be “soft”. Certainly it is not almost like a “hard cover” anyway…
