Recently, I had need to purchase a new rosary. I found a St. Benedict Rosary at my parish store that suited me fine (it looks as though it can stand the rigors of being carried around in my pocket without breaking).

After it and the Saint Benedict medal on it was blessed, I brought it home and as I was praying the Rosary, I noticed it had two beads between the second and third decades rather than one. None of my previous rosaries had that. Is this a defect of this particular rosary or is there another prayer that is to be said when you reach that extra bead?

It’s a defect. It’s unfortunate that you had it blessed already, otherwise you could just return it in exchange for another one. But now that it’s been blessed I’m not sure it would be appropriate to return it since the store would likely end up throwing it away as it is defective.

Darn, that’s a little disappointing but defect or not, I’ll hang onto it. it just gives me an extra moment to pray on.

just think of it as two extra prayers, add in there the prayer to St/ Michael and a paryer to St. Benedict 🙂

Perhaps there’s a reason we don’t know, and it’s not just a defect. If it were mine, I’d consider it custom-made for my devotion!

Now, if it’s missing beads, that’s tougher-

Well… I pondered this some and I have my answer… see… unlike most rosaries that go to ten… mine goes to eleven…

That’s right… Its one more than any other rosary! 😉

I have a Rosary that has 8 beads on one decade and 11 on the next. I don’t really mind except when I’m called on to lead the public recitation in church, then I find I have to concentrate so much on counting that I lose most of the sense of prayerfulness. Other than that, I love it - it’s hard wearing, tactile, smells nice (rose wood) and has a lovely medal at the bottom with a Sacred Heart on one side and ‘Jesus, I trust in thee’ on the other; it has become a good friend to me. Stick with your ‘defective’ Rosary, it may bring you blessings!

If you wanted to, you could use the extra bead to say this prayer of St. Benedict:

Gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate on you, and a life to proclaim you. Through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
