Blessed Henry of Treviso
Also known as
Arrigo, Henry of Bolzano and Rigo
Henry was born in Bolzano, Tyrol, Italy in 1250. He was the son of very poor parents and had no formal education. He was therefore unable to read or write. Although he had no book knowledge, Henry was wise in the ways of the Lord. When he was a teenager, he moved to Treviso to look for work. He became a day laborer.
Henry married and became a father. Unfortunately, both his wife and child died. When this happened, He lost all interest in this life on earth. He continued to work as a labourer, but gave away everything he could spare. He attended daily Mass, worked to help those even poorer than himself, and spent his spare time in prayer. In his later years he became a beggar, asking alms and giving away all that he did not need. The people were generous in their donations of food because they knew he shared their gifts with many people who were poor and homeless. By the end of his life, Henry could barely walk.
He would drag himself to morning Mass, moving painfully and slowly.
He died on June 10, 1315, in Treviso, Italy of natural causes. People crowded into his little room. They wanted a relic, a keepsake.
They found his treasures, namely, a prickly hair-shirt, a log of wood that was his pillow, and some straw that was the mattress for his bed. The little room was stripped of these.
His body was moved to the cathedral so that those who wished, could pay their tribute. Over two hundred miracles were reported within a few days after his death.
He was beatified on 23 July 1750 by Pope Benedict XIV.
Blessed Henry of Treviso,
