You are saved by the grace of God alone. Not faith alone; not good works alone. God’s Grace is the ONLY thing that can save us. You need faith because your faith allows you to receive that gift of Grace from God. But you also need to do good works because your faith is justified by your good works. You live out your faith by your good deeds and good works.

…and on another occasion, contrary to my deepest wishes, desires and promises, I do not have the strength, ability and will to cooperate, but instead give in one more time to temptation? …But if my cooperation is not completely my responsibility and choice, and God’s grace is the saving factor, then where does responsibility for succumbing to temptation really rest?
Could be too much trying and not enough letting go and trusting in Jesus and relying on the help of the Holy Spirit. Also this could be combined with a little doubt that what God offers cannot be compared to whatever is tempting you. We should all seek to trust in Jesus and rely on the Holy Spirit in times of temptation. Also we can pray to Mary and the saints including St. Paul and St. Peter.

We are saved by faith and works. James is very to-the-point about this in James 2:14-18
