Pope Francis Addresses President Obama And Guests At White House

“Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our “common home”, we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about “a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change” (Laudato Si’, 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.”

If only he had made a statement cracking down on abortion, or euthanasia, or gay marriage, or some other major moral conflict we have in our country.

That is a preposterous claim. Trump and the GOP support equal opportunity, NOT equal outcome like progressives want, and that does NOT equate to denying a right to health or good income.

Furthermore, illegal immigrants and refugees do NOT have rights under the law. There is space for compassion, and Trump is rightfully not shutting the door entirely. “Travel ban” is a phrase made up by the media; what is actually happening is “extreme vetting”, by which immigrants and refugees are still allowed to enter if they pass the necessary checks.
Illegal immigration only helps the rich by providing cheap labour. Why doesn’t the left work at making the process to legally immigrate to the U.S. fairer? Why doesn’t the church work at helping Mexico become a less corrupt country? There is no reason why Mexico should not be as prosperous a country as Canada.

How secular!
Politically correct rhetoric!
Not one mention of God, and the trust we should place in Him through our prayers.
Wonder whether the bishop of San Diego wrote the speech.🤷

Sorry, i couldn’t face clicking the link to the, er, Huffpo: it’s Lent, and we shouldn’t waste food (by vomiting).

Oh yes. That White House speech was when he was most muzzled. He tried to find common ground (protecting the environment, which, I think we can all agree is necessary, even if we aren’t sure of the exact consequences).

For those up in arms over climate change, it is a shame that our country has made this issue political. It never belonged in the realm of politics. We should see it as a common sense issue.

Should we, or should we not care for our environment? Should we do what we can to have clean water, less pollution, cleaner air and set aside wild areas?

Should we, or should we not keep in mind those who live in impoverished areas of the world whose environment is polluted by corporate interests? Remember, to Pope Francis, this isn’t a US political issue, this is a worldwide issue he has seen first hand when he visits villages that are barely inhabitable because of corporate interests (mining, diverting of waterways, industrial pollution, etc…).

I cannot give my comments regarding the bishops reported ideas because of forum rules.

What rules?
I believe abucs is trying to say that his frustration on this topic is such that if he spoke his mind, he’d likely speak in a way that would either appear uncharitable or bashing Church leaders, which is against the forum rules.

Many of us have to sometimes muzzle our thoughts for this reason I find. 😃

The forums rules are in this forum.
