Statement from Bishop Robert Brom:
To the Pastors and People of the Diocese of San Diego
Today, the Diocese of San Diego is filing a petition in bankruptcy court for Chapter 11 reorganization. This action was authorized by both the Diocesan Finance Council, comprised mainly of lay people, and the Diocesan College of Consultors, comprised of priests representing the body of priests in the diocese.
Unfortunately, renewed efforts at settlement negotiations were unsuccessful. We put money on the table that would have stretched our financial capability to the limit, but demands were made which exceeded the financial resources of both the diocese and our insurance carrier.
We have decided against litigating our cases because of the length of time the process could take and, more importantly, because early trial judgments in favor of some victims could so deplete diocesan and insurance resources that there would be nothing left for other victims.
Consequently, we have concluded that Chapter 11 reorganization is now the best way available for us to compensate all of the victims as fairly and equitably as our resources will allow. To this end, we are presenting to the court an accurate statement on available diocesan assets and we will propose a comprehensive plan for compensating the victims and hearing their cases. Our participation in this process will demonstrate that this is not a ā€œcop out,ā€ but a sincere effort to face up to our responsibility.
At the same time, we will be disclosing the names of those accused, about whom there is certitude regarding their abuse, as well as the extent of their abuse, and we will verify that no known abuser is functioning in ministry.
In pastoral outreach to victims of abuse over the past five years, our experience has been that they are not trying to harm the Church, but looking for no more than just and equitable compensation. This we will continue to do our best to provide.
The Diocese of San Diego remains committed, above all, to reach out with pastoral concern and care to victims of sexual abuse and their families, and to promote healing and reconciliation with them.
We look to our patrons, San Diego and Our Lady of Refuge, to win for us the grace of doing what God would have us do.

I was never sure how money could fix any trauma, especially something like this. I’m sure everyone will get some money, just not more than the 1.1 million per case that Orange county paid. This is incredibly sad, I just hope we all learned something.

There are at least two answers to the question how money can fix any trauma. The first is the cynical ā€œgreen poulticeā€ cure. No matter how much something hurts, it will feel better if you rub ā€œgreen poulticeā€ (money) on it. The second is that money represents an admission of fault on the part of the payor and a measure of vengeance for the injured. Of course, money can also buy profession care for treatment of the trauma. Finally, payment usually brings and end to the emotional toll making a claim takes.

You see what these priests have done? They have hurt the Church more then any protestant, muslim, jew or any other class of anti-Catholic could ever have.

Good thing I wasnt the Bishop, or these priests would have been hung from the nearest tree a long time ago.

The sinning priests initiated the problem, but the real damage was done by the bishops. They are the ones who covered it up, transferred the priests, and allowed a limited problem to become a disaster.

Unfortunately they were encouraged and abetted by the Vatican which urged pastoral vs judicial solutions to rebellious priests.

I’m sure that most of the victims are no longer Catholic, but the ones that are, should know what programs they are decimating with these payouts. 1 million dollars is alot of money.

No more gay priests.

Allow married candidates for the priesthood.

Thats nearly as bad. There shoudnt be gay priests, but that doesnt mean we have to go get married men who cannot devote their entire lives to the Church.

San Diego Diocese Files for Bankruptcy , Because of a court case against bishop Robert Brom who is alleged to have taken part in an orgy at a seminary ,In deposition testimony last November Bishop Robert Brom admitted there had been an investigation into his own sexual misconduct. Documents about that investigation were about to emerge if the civil cases in San Diego had continued one more day. A motion to compel Bishop Brom to respond to questions about his specific sexual misconduct allegations was filed February 22

Too much legal mumbo-jumbo. Perhaps we should borrow some ideas from the medieval inquisition in making people talk šŸ˜›

So this will be mumbo jumbo ,The hirearchy of the church did no thinking about the schools ,hospitals and other things when they decided to cover up abuse

Your making vast generalizations again. While there have been some Bishops who actively covered up the abuse scandal, there were also many who acted under poor legal advice (there are more then a few cases of Bishops who were willing to act as the shepards that they are and deal with the situation head-on, but were held back by lawyers and legal controversies), and some who can even be regarded as truly ignorant of the issue. Besides, there is no connection between any of them.

What about the victims?
I recently read that bankruptcy worked out very well, both for the victims and the Tucson Diocese. Bankruptcy doesn’t mean the victims need to be cast off and forgotten.

Still, those who think the sex abuse scandals are history have another thing coming. This will plague the church for generations.
