On Saturday, April 14, San Francisco’s infamous Most Holy Redeemer Church hosted the Third Annual Miss Castro Country Club Pageant. The pageant is a drag show. The Castro Country Club describes itself as a “clean & sober gathering place for all people and a home for the queer recovery community.”

The pageant was advertised in a number of homosexualist media outlets. The event MC was a transvestite who uses the name “Laybelline,” and one of the judges, another transvestite, uses the name “Syphillis Diller.” The competitors used similar names. At least one video of one of the performers is already up on YouTube.

Most Holy Redeemer has frequently made national news for their scandalous hosting of pro-homosexual events. Drag shows are nothing new: in 2011 the parish hosted the Switch Hitters Ball, and in 2007, the parish hosted the Desperate Divas drag contest, just one week before the unfortunate visit of Archbishop George Niederauer, when he gave communion to two members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

More recently, the parish extended an invitation to renegade Episcopal Bishop Otis Charles to speak at one of their 2011 Advent Vespers services. On November 22, 2011, CalCatholic reported on the planned event. We reported that in 2004 Charles left his wife of 42 years, and “married” another man—an action that caused the Episcopal Church to sever ties with him. We followed up with a report on two other scheduled Most Holy Redeemer Advent Vespers speakers: the Revs. Jane Spahr and Roland Stringfellow. Both are openly homosexual supporters of same-sex “marriage.”

MHR has been getting away with this kind of thing for years. I don’t think it will ever change.

Most Holy Redeemer is bad…Most Holy Family Monastery is bad…

What is it with “Most Holy”!?

Something really needs to be done about that parish. How long, O Lord?

This is the very definition of “shameful.” Makes me sorry for the regular guys at that place.

Why hasn’t the Vatican shut this place down yet? I’m sure it has reached the ears of His Holiness.

Yes it does… and the priest or whoever is allowing this to happen to be excommunicated.
I honestly think that at this point it’s so far gone it might need to be closed. This sort of activity has been so rampant for so long.

To me…this blatant, long running and very visible/public corruption of the our faith and liturgical worship…is simply…a test…and…a call…to prayer, to fasting, to almsgiving and in general to continual penance…the Lent that never ends. Above all, it is an imperative call to fidelity…for me personally…for all of us who believe that we ourselves really are faithful.

A call for fidelity…fidelity…fidelity…110 percent faithful – TO God the Father – THROUGH Our Lord Jesus Christ – IN the Holy Spirit…110 percent…in each and every aspect of our Catholic Faith and Teachings…and our liturgical worship and devotional practices. It is a specific and particular call to fidelity for bishops, for priests, for deacons, for consecrated religious, for liturgical ministers, and for apostolate leaders/members, and especially for laity…we in the pews. If we can’t be 110 percent in fidelity…then how can we criticize/denounce these MHR parish egregious infidelities…when we wallow in our own peccadillo infidelities!

As GK Chesterton purportedly put it (paraphrasing): …I can tell you what is wrong with the Catholic Church in one word…me! I have been a Catholic and disciple of Christ all my life and I am still not a saint…some days and in some moments, I am “close”…but “close” only counts in horseshoes!

It would be nice if this MHR parish “saga” were “finis”… but it ain’t going to happen without all of us…“praying and sacrificing”… it to everlasting death!

Just some thoughts for consideration…

Excellent. Yes indeed we must put on the “Armour of God” in every respect…PRAY PRAY PRAY!!! And put 110% in to our faith. I would say the smoke has entered the sancturary and now it is in full blaze in certain parts.

I don’t understand this at all. I didn’t know it was possible for such things to happen at a Catholic Church. Why on earth doesn’t the Bishop do something about it? Who’s responsible here? Who is the Bishop? Why don’t the people of the diocese contact the Vatican? Immediately.

This just doesn’t seem possible. Is it really a Catholic parish?

Why is a drag show sinful? Thank you.
Well, it is certainly something that should not be in a church, on that I think we can all agree. As for sinfulness, I think it depends on intent and context. While not my cup of tea, if some everyday normal guys dressed up as women in order to raise money for charity or something, that is one thing. If it is a glorification of the breakdown of the genders (such as promoting “transgender” and other such ideas), then it is working against morality.

I hope that helps. Does anyone else want to further clairify?

Yeah, I mean I was thinking about it and it’s definitely out of bounds if held inside the Church. It’s also not my cup of tea, either.

But I don’t necessarily think that, for example, a man wearing a dress is sinful. Maybe it is but I don’t know why.

The event was a fundraiser for the non-profit Castro Country Club, a facility which helps LGBT persons recover from alcohol or drug abuse. They are currently renegotiating their lease from the new owner of the building in which they are housed.

Why hasn’t the Vatican shut this place down yet? I’m sure it has reached the ears of His Holiness.
That’s an issue that has to be dealt with at the local level. The pope is not interested in getting involved in the affairs of one parish. In comparison to the universal Church, one parish is not very significant to the Vatican. Right now it’s dealing the the HHR in the USA, the return of the SSPX, relations with Muslims and Jews, different research projects, assignment of bishops, the Eastern Catholic Church in places like Iraq, the Latin Church in China and diplomatic relations with world governments. When you put Most Holy Redeemer Parish against this backdrop, you can understand why the Holy Father wouldn’t even hear about this. There are layers and layers of filters between us and the Holy Father. The last one is Msgr. Georg G. At the end of those filters, he decides what the pope needs to deal with and what has to go to someone else.

The rule of thumb at the Vatican is to forward these issues to the local bishop, not to the pope. In addition, the Vatican is not feeling to warm and fuzzy toward American Catholics these days, because of the shabby show of support that many have given the bishops on the HHR problem. They’re still trying to figure out how people don’t understand what’s at stake here.

This is very important. When we want the Church’s attention, we must ask ourselves if we have done everything possible at the local level. We can’t run to the pope every time something goes wrong. It’s not his job to micromanage the Church. That’s what subsidiarity means. I simple English, don’t bother the pope until you have used every possible means beneath the pope and even then, make sure it’s a problem that is big enough for the pope to drop everything else that he’s doing to take care of this one.

If we look at the list of things that the pope is dealing with right now, this would not make it to the top 100. It’s one strange parish out of thousand of parishes in the US.

The people of that parish are the ones who can bring their concerns to the local bishop. Even the rest of us who are not in that parish have no real leverage there. It’s not our parish. There again is that principle of subsidiarity. The problem has to dealt with from the very bottom up. It’s like an uppercase V. As you go up, more people get involved.

That is just totally sickening. How can any place that calls itself Catholic put on a drag show and still manage to call itself Catholic??? I hope and pray that the Bishop severely reprimands whoever is responsible for this. This is sickening and is a scandal.

Slow down people. First of all, there are too many cooks in this kitchen. Who of us on this forum belongs to that parish? Canonically, unless we belong to that parish, we don’t get a voice.

The other problem here is that you can’t excommunicate every time someone does something wrong or that looks wrong. To excommunicate you must violate one of the seven canons that carry the penalty of excommunication. This situation is not even in the canons, much less an excommunication offense.

There may be a disciplinary issue here, but even that’s not too clear from the responses to the article. It sounds like there are several sides to this story and none of them are being completely reported.

To be honest, I read the article and came away confused. I understood that they put on a show as a benefit for a charity. I also understood that the pastor has not celebrated Sunday mass there in 2012, apparently at the request of the bishop.

But when you read the comments by some parishioners, there is another side to their parish that the article does not speak about. Apparently they have the EF, produce vocations and their parishioners had no problems renting facilities, because apparently there was nothing immoral happening.

To be honest, these are all conflicting pieces of information and all of them are probably pieces of the truth. Yet, the whole truth is not represented in one article.

My suggestion to everyone here is to watch and observe. We may learn something and to keep our noses out of someone else’s parish. Intrusion in parishes is something that even the Vatican refuses to do unless you’re talking about violations of canon law, which there seem to be none.

Again, there may be violations of discipline and lack of good taste. In the little that is reported, nothing violates canon law. Therefore, the Vatican will not get involved. I don’t blame the Vatican either. It’s a rather confusing situation with many sides and all incomplete.

Brother JR, I fully agree with both of your posts. And I definitely believe one should have all of the facts before rushing to judgement. That being said, if MHRC is indeed hosting and therefore endorsing a drag fashion show, and if I lived in that diocese, I would follow the St. Paul method of correction. I’d go to them personally, one on one, to try to make them understand what’s being done is wrong and scandalous; if that didn’t work, go back taking my friends from the diocese. If I still didn’t convince them, I and my friends would make our displeasure known to the Bishop. And if he didn’t want to convince them, we’d all picket/protest both the Bishop and MHRC. I think it’s bad to say, oh, I’ll leave it alone, they’re not hurting anybody because it does hurt the whole Body. That parish may be independent of the rest of us canonically but what results is not. I’d be holding the sign “WWJW–Not THAT! Quit ripping at His seamless garment!”
