Because you are in an environment where you believe yourself to be unsafe. It’s like carrying a rifle in Alaska. You feel safer against polar bears and grizzly bears. And that’s fine because you have good reason to need protection.

What is your environment that you even think that “something might happen” necessitating having a firearm at hand? Even South Philly isn’t that dangerous!
**Well, speaking as a person who lives in Anchorage Alaska, I can say that I fear criminal violence much more than I fear bears. **Bears are not out to hunt humans, the criminals are. I carry a gun everyday to work (I work nights in a fairly bad neighborhood). I sleep with a gun next to the bed (well, two guns really, my .45 & my AK-47. Three if you count my wife’s .45 too). Crime is a problem in this city of 300,000. Some neighborhoods are much, much worse than others, but I don’t feel ‘safe’ anywhere but at home with a locked door.

I wear a gun to the mall- where there have been 4 gang related shootings in the last 3 months.

I wear my gun to the grocery store- when just last month 2 people involved in a drive-by shooting fled into the grocery store during its busiest time. About 6pm on a weeknight.

These are on the better side of town. The crimes were committed by people who were unable to legally own firearms, but still had them in defiance of the law. During the most recent shooting at the mall, the gang-bangers chased each other around the parking lot in their thumpy-cars and fired off about a hundred rounds at each other…most of which missed the intended target and hit the building and parked cars. Luckily no bystanders were hurt.

If someone starts shooting at me, I at least want to be able to return fire…

Learn something new every day. I had no idea Alaska was so dangerous, seemingly more so than some of the big cities in the lower 48. I’ll take your word for it.

if lots of those people could whip out guns if they came to the end of their ropes or got a bit of rage, etc. Slaughter city, that’s what it would be.
Just because someone MIGHT do something doesn’t mean that the rights of someone else should be limited.
Arba Sicula:
San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and Chicago, and New York City with their huge densely packed populations aren’t Little Rock, and what is acceptable in a rural state and a small city isn’t even thinkable in large metropolitan areas.
Even if their actions make puts their citizens at risk?

By limiting gun ownership over the years and now completely banning it, San Francisco has a violent crime rate 24% higher than the national average. They fair a bit better with property crimes with a rate 12% higher than the national average. While most of the United States is enjoying reductions in violent crime, San Francisco actually boasts an increase. In 2003, the city had 69 murders, while the most recent FBI report shows 88 murders. The city also had more aggravated assaults, as well.

Yeah. God forbid that we prevent some crazies from riding the subway strapped.

Last I heard, vigorous police work has lowered the crime rate in NYC. With results like that, no one here - and I include NYC Conservatives - wants more guns in the city.

Sorry, but I wouldn’t believe a word that O’Reilly says, and that opinion is held by a lot of conservatives as well as liberals.

Lets just say that the Russian Mob has its hooks deeeeeeeep into the fishing industry 😦 . Its the only place I know where people can make $100,000 over a summer, and be broke halfway through winter (the normal recreational activies among the fishermen are coke, booz, and hookers). Heres a bad statistic- Rapes dropped by 9% in the last couple years…and yet we still have the highest rate of rape in the country.

Back when I was working at a fish processing plant, I was the only one there at night when the 'goons would come by to pick up their payments. Its a very odd feeling when you deal with the mob… :o

Now, I’m not saying we’re worse than LA or Chicago, but we do have a crime problem. Recently its been street gangs…the Ruskies tend to work ‘behind the scenes’ supplying drugs and such- they tend to leave people alone. The gang-bangers are much more of a danger to the civilian population, I’d call them the real threat…I’ve kinda been hoping that the Mob’d wipe 'em out…

If you feel comfortable living like that, that’s your call. I prefer to live under more normal conditions. Given the fact that 30+ states allow people to carry guns, that is the norm in this country.

Well, they reference the FBI site as their source. If you are a “doubting Thomas” and doubt what O’Reilly says, why don’t you visit the FBI site and tell us which of O’Reilly’s numbers are off.

Arba Sicula:
I don’t count NYC’s neighboring counties in my totals, just the city, so I didn’t include nearby counties for your town.
If you ever feel like the safe, big 'ol city you might see that when there isn’t water all around you cities and towns jumble together and people consider them one big city.

I don’t doubt a word that you say. I had no idea that it was like that up your way. I always pictured Alaska the way the travel brochures advertised.

How is 30 out of 50 the norm? A majority, okay.

BTW, does having the majority position on an issue mean that it’s the correct position?

I wouldn’t believe anything O’Reilly says even if he were reading straight out of the Catholic Catechism. He’s a slime bucket IMO.

Like St. Louis, I guess. Fair enough.

She said that you ought to come up here and ride in a packed subway car in rush hour. (Think sardine cans) Then, after that experience, she said that you ought to consider what it would be like if lots of those people could whip out guns if they came to the end of their ropes or got a bit of rage, etc. Slaughter city, that’s what it would be.

One simply can’t compare conditions where you live with those of where I live.
Oh yeah, because down here during five o’clock traffic when its bumper to bumper, everyone whips out their piece and starts firing. Heck, I even put the top down on my car so I get a better field of fire.

Isn’t that the same arguement pro-abortion people make when they are shown polls showing over 50% of Americans oppose abortion?

Sir Knight:

Right, and it’s your state’s call to allow carrying concealed guns. Like I told Vern Humphrey, I have nothing against his state’s allowing its people to carry guns.

I just don’t want it here, and for me, that’s what counts. Gothamites of every political persuasion are against handguns, and so that’s how it should be here. In Vern’s Little Rock, it should be what the Arkansans want.

The saying up here is that Anchorage is only a 30 minute drive from Alaska.

The city up here is just like cities down there. The one city has more than 50% of the states population. Housing prices & property taxes are insane. Gangs are a problem (mostly Filipino). Drugs are a problem. All the comforts of the Lower '48…

If a person is charging, or an army is marching, then its not preemptive. The U.S.A, for example, did not preemptively strike the Nazi’s. Its true that Germany had not landed on American soil (in any significant way). But the Nazi’s had attacked our allies and so we defended.
What allies of ours did the Nazis attack? The French and British had no alliance with us until after we were at war.

And my point was Hitler could (and should) have been stopped much earlier – when he marched into the Rhineland (which was part of Germany under French control.)

st.jerome:
Do you shoot a person with an ax who is not charging anyone?
You need to do your homework – the Tueller Drill is part of standard firearms defense training. A person with a knife or an ax, if within 20 feet or so cannot be stopped by a firearm. Therefore if a person is threatening you with such a weapon, and you wait for him to charge, you are dead.

st.jerome:
Do you keep your finger on the trigger, or do you shoot that person if he says he’s going to charge someone but has not done it yet?
You need to do your homework – on one “keeps his finger on the trigger until he intends to shoot.”

And do you have to wait for the other guy to shoot before you shoot?

There’s no comparison between New Yorkers and your people, and crowding in South Calolina and crowding here.

If you have such a low opinion of your fellow New Yorkers, why do you continue to live there?

No low opinion at all. We’re the best. It’s just that we have a well known and well deserved reputation for brusqueness and confrontation.

So if you’re “the best,” how come you can’t be trusted with guns?

Here in Arkansas, we trust our people to carry guns, and violent crime goes down. The same is true in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

Yet, according to you, if New Yorkers were trusted with guns, violent crime would go up.

What do you think is wrong with New Yorkers that they cannot be trusted?

vern humphrey:

Because we are what we are - that’s why. And there aren’t any New Yorkers who want guns to be allowed - even the Conservatives are against it.
