You know, I’ve been thinking about that. The more I think about how it conflicts against basic reasoning, the more my head hurts!
There’s no logic to the anti-gun position. They will work themselves into a lather inventing reasons to violate their fellow citizen’s rights.

Told you we’re a bit confrontational. 🙂
I know no one’s hostile all the time. And I did live up North for a while and was glad to move back home here in SC.
I can understand. I like to get out of the city myself into the country or to the shore.
Pardon my ignorance, but has this ever been put to a vote?
I’m not sure. I’ll check.

In the meanwhile, read this From the Orange County, New York Shooters Assn:

Handgun carry information for out of staters coming to NY and NY City

ONE EXCEPTION: HR 218 allowes active duty police officers and with certian requirments, retired police officers to Carry any where in the US. I have talked to Anne Stone of the NYPD Legal, 646-610-5400, and she said that they follow Federal law.
I keep getting e-mails from out of state people who want to know what they have to do to get a carry license in NY State or NY City or if their state license is valid in NY State or NY City. My only reply, (just kidding,) is,
Code:
 "Are you NUTS??"
I know that this might come as a shock to you but NY in general is really, really, really anti-gun and triple that for concealed carry. (Fortunately, the way NY State law is set up, many "Up State" counties are more reasonable especially when the local gun owners are politically active and carry some weight.) NY City is really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, anti-gun and that to a power of 100 for concealed carry. Just to have a 38 in your night stand takes a year to get a license many requirments just to make it hard like you have to pick up the application in person and your application has to be typed plus many other requirments. You have to pay $99 for the license plus $340 every 3 years for a license.
My NY State handgun license is not even valid in NYC.
NY City does not even issue handgun licenses to people who do not live in NY City.
NY City does not issue anything except for a "Premise license" that only allows you to keep a handgun in your home or where you work and you can take it unloaded in a locked container to an approved NY City range to practice. You are not even legally allowed to take it outside of NY City.
Enough evidence for you guys about the possibility of handguns in NYC?

I had a conversation when I was a teenager with my dad re: firearms and self defense and if it is ok. My dad told me better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.

I understand that y’all are against guns in NYC, but what about the rest of the country? Are you for banning them everywhere, or just in your big cities?

I guess I don’t give a rats behind if you disarm yourselves as long as you don’t try to disarm me…

I didn’t see that letter on the page you linked to. But regardless, NYC has too much buearacratic red tape for me. Definately sounds like a case of public figures either not getting their facts straight about gun ownership and carrying or they’re old fashioned loonies who are afraid of the public.

You’ll get my gun when you pry it out of my cold, dead, hand.

Hey Arba, was that from www.Packing.org ? I could have sworn I’ve seen that post before…

If y’all aren’t familiar, www.Packing.org is a site dedicated to CCW information. They have summeries of the laws on CCW in all 50 states, Canada, & Mexico.

You do what you want where you live. You and Vern and the others can carry concealed guns if you like. I have no problem with that at all.

Just checking, many of the anti-gunners want them banned everywhere…I just won’t be visiting NYC, DC, or San Fran. Actually, I hate big cities so I guess its no big loss…

Are you going to follow this up with a post proving Hitler was antisemetic?http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

He wasn’t antisemetic, just a confused and misunderstood artist. 😃

And besides, most of the people of Germany approved his policies.

(It seems to me I was reading something – fairly recently – about how most of the people in a certain city approve of violating their fellow citizens’ constitutional rights. I wish I could remember which city that was.)http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

Yeah, I seem to remember reading the same thing. Didn’t that city have something like 5 major areas? I think they call them burroughs. 😉

does having the majority position on an issue mean that it’s the correct position?
Maybe. Maybe not but it does make it the norm.

I wouldn’t believe anything O’Reilly says even if he were reading straight out of the Catholic Catechism. He’s a slime bucket IMO.
Again, if you doubt his numbers, then go to the FBI site and show us where there are wrong.

Arba Sicula:
Because you are in an environment where you believe yourself to be unsafe. It’s like carrying a rifle in Alaska. You feel safer against polar bears and grizzly bears. And that’s fine because you have good reason to need protection.

But, in your town in Pennsylvania? What’s the name of your town? Robbers’ Roost?

What is your environment that you even think that “something might happen” necessitating having a firearm at hand? Even South Philly isn’t that dangerous!
Didn’t you read what I said earlier or did you just not understand it. The odds of winning the top jackpot in a lottery are 1 in ten million or some huge figure like that. Most of us can play the lottery all of our lives buying dozens of tickets per drawing and never win the top prize. Yet, almost every week somebody does win that top prize – the luck of the draw was with that person.

A person could live in a community with a near zero crime rate and have the luck of the draw be against them and find themselves the victim of a crime while another individual who lives in a community with a much higher crime rate have the luck of the draw on their side and never be a victim.

The point is that none of us know when & where crime may strike and therefore it is prudent for us to be prepared at all times.

Most of us will never be in a serious car crash yet most of us wear a seat belt. Most of us will never have a major fire in our homes but most of us still carry insurance. Most of us will never have our home robbed yet most of us still lock our doors most of the time.

It’s called be cautious, being careful. The same applies to carrying guns. Most of us will never have to draw that gun in self defense yet across the country somebody do so everyday. One day, that person may be you.

Far better to be armed and never need to use the gun then to one day not be armed and have need of the gun.

In 2004 … * violent crime cost America $14 billion.
  • traffic accidents cost America $74 billion.
  • a violent assault happened once every 30 seconds.
  • an injury car crash happened once every 11 seconds.
  • 45 police officers were killed with a firearm.
  • 49 police officers were killed in traffic accidents.

I think each community has the right to determine what the most appropriate weapons legislation for themselves. Guess that makes me a local-government conservative on this issue.

However, I do get annoyed with the ardent pro-guners who would deny the right to self-government of my community.

Now, as far as the gun TRADE, that’s a whole 'nother can of worms. The majority of guns used in crimes in NYC are acquired in states with lax gun purchase laws. Make whatever weapons carrying regulations you like for your community, but insufficient due dilligence as to WHO you are selling to is irresponsible. When states let criminals buy guns, they’re hurting all of us.

Maybe because we were endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights that no government has a right to infringed upon. One of those rights is to be safe & secure within our person and the right to self defense. Limiting our access to guns also limits our ability to protect ourselves.

So in the end, we have to fight for our gun rights on your home turf, because evejntually you will get around to denying me the right to bear arms in MY home turf.

You prove my point for me. Y’all aren’t willing to just disarm yourselves, you won’t be happy until the Gov’t is the only legal owner of firearms.

Don’t you understand that most of the firearms that criminals use are NOT legally owned or possessed? Don’t you understand that the criminals get their guns the same places they get their drugs?

Why hassle those of us who purchase guns at gunshows? We go through the exact same FBI check when we buy a gun there as we would at the store (just an FYI, the vast majority of venders at the gun shows are gun store owner/operators, just like any other trade show). If you want to decrease crime, go close the mexican border. That’ll put a serious hurt on the drug trade & stop most of the illegal weapons from coming in as well.

Enforce the weapons laws already on the books…prosecute people who sell firearms to felons. But leave us law-abiding types alone. Don’t turn us into criminals, which is what y’all are trying to do. Every time you ban guns somewhere, there is a % of the gun owners who will refuse to give up their right to bear arms. I’m betting that in your vaunted NYC there are thousands of perfectly reasonable, lawful citizens, who own illegal weapons. These people would be criminals in your city for nothing other than exercising their God given right to bear arms.

Amen. I don’t deny any of the pro-gunnies the right to decide what’s right for their communities vis-a-vis guns. Vern can carry his pistol in Arkansas because that’s what he and his fellow Arkansans wanted, and Iit’s fine with me as well if he also has one of those famous Arkansas Toothpicks hidden in his boot.

The same is true for the Pennsylvanians and the Alaskans or the folks in any other state with liberal gun carry laws. Your state, your decision.

Just don’t tell me and the people in my community or city that we should have liberal carry laws when we have already a nearly universal consensus, among the populace and the police, that gun-carrying is not wanted in NYC.

Anchorage and Little Rock and the Lehigh Valley and Dallas and Birmingham and whereever else are not New York City. You have your consensus and have acted on it - guns are okay in your parts. But, they’re not okay here and we just don’t want them here.

Let each community decide for itself.
